My passion is clothes alterations. I goal is to help others learn how to alter their own clothes, and to even start up a small business working from home or open a shop. Sewing is an age old experience. This skill can be turned into a business by altering clothes. Most people need their trousers or jeans shortened. Over the past 20+ years I have learnt how to provide my customers with professional workmanship, I guarantee my workmanship, That is not something a lot of people can say, Enjoy the videos.
Hi Judith, I'm so pleased to have found your video easily. My serger is the same as yours and I want to do a rolled hem but my cutting width adjusting knob will not push in so I can move the needle plate setting knob to R. Do you have any suggestions as to how I may get it to work again?
You have to lower the blade before you can change it to R. Have you tried that? If the blade will not lower, then it could be that the blade is attached the wrong way around. That happened to me once. I put the blade on wrong, and couldn't lower it.
Hi Judith thanks for your reply. Yes I have lowered the blade with no trouble. The trouble is just with the cutting width adjusting knob. Everything else seems to be operating fine. It is overlocking as normal. The cwa knob will turn clockwise and anticlockwise but it just won't budge pushing it in.
My grand baby is so thick in the thighs that when she walks she could literally start a forest fire! I'm going to have to show her this video because she has burned through one too many pairs of paints already!
I heard somewhere that you have to sew from neck line to the tip of shoulder. To narrow it down to compensate for removing the thickness of pad. Do you know if this is true?
That may be the case depending on the persons body shape and in particular the width from the neck to the top of the armhole. Some people are short in this area and others are longer. In a lot of cases, when the pad is removed the garment sits perfectly on the shoulder. But if the jacket is loose after removing it, then yes some adjustment might me needed. That is another story, because you can only start at the neckline, then taper out to the shoulder. And then the sleeve head would need to be adjusted. I have clients who have this issue (not just jackets) and I ask if they are okay to have a little gather at the top of the sleeve. On a top or dress where the fabric is soft, it can look nice.
Hello Judith...Removing the label is the first thing I do after trying on a garment...I've had one or two mishaps..mostly when using scissor on the pesky ones sewn into collars...however now I cut just short of the garment and pull the label strand by strand where it frays it often works...Thank you for sharing...Take care x
That's a great idea and one that I also use. Although because my machine is permanently set up, I generally unpick the label from the collar/tape and then restitch.
I use a bonding powder. This is a little bigger than a hole in a jacket, but the principle is the same. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rQWfjANjs5Q.html
Hi Julie Not really sure what you mean. It is a Horn Sewing table. The green is a standard sewing mat. they come in different sizes. And all the other tools are just my tools of the trade so to speak. Was there something in particular you were referring to?
Oh I know what you mean now. Here is a link to a video I created on that quite some time ago. Hope it helps. It really is fabulous and I use it all the time. The only thing is that threads drop into it, so I have to give it a clean out every now and again. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tccoZn29bJA.html
Loved this video! I appreciate you taking the time to go thru the steps. Many videos don't even talk and it goes so quick one cannot be sure if they are doing it correctly. Thank you!
I am not criticizing. I am just, and always have been curious about how to pronounce any and all words. Here is a link on how to say "awl": dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/awl
Thank you I always enjoy your videos. I'm thick through the waist and blouse/tee's are always boxy shaped. Can you do a video to "shape" the waist in for a more slimming look?
this is by far the most USEFUL DIY pincushion tutorial I've seen! and since I don't have stretch velcro - and because I'm cheap and probably won't bother to buy any - I've decided to just improvise (as frugal ppl are prone to doing!) and use a 1" elastic for my wrist band and just sew velcro onto that instead! but i was SO impressed with the sticky velcro ON the sewing machine and INTERCHANGING the pincushions!!! brilliant :)
I hope the customer didn't pay the 1st person that hemmed it. There's no excuse for not trying it on and going according to how the garment hangs on her body. Good work on matching the pattern. Hope it worked out for the customer.
Most things don't fit me right. I get by, resorting to tees, because they stretch. I can dress them up or down. Maybe I can try re doing something to fit.
Thank you very much for showing how to do this. I wish I had seen your video a long time ago. I wouldn't have donated some of my favorite pants if I had known how to do this.
I didn’t read all of the comments. So you may have answered this. Have you had trouble with glue unstick in after accidental moisture . . . walking through wet grass?I know you could reglue. Still, I wondered about protecting covered shoes from ungluing. I have 2 pairs I want to cover. Can’t wait. Thanks.
Ha Ha I put the glass top into my mouth. Very bad habit. I don't recommend it to anyone. It's just how I have done it all these years. I also have a wrist band for pins. I don't use it though.
Magic fingers from our genie as always. Did you ever go into really expensive boutiques to see what's on trend for your alterations? I love to copy and are more able to make the alterations now thanks to your book and your expert knowledge. Thank-you Judith xxx
I am not big on shopping Elizabeth. Generally dont have the time. It all just comes from clients bringing me their clothes to alter. I do work 9 - 5 Monday to Friday on my alteration business. Then after hours on videos and website. So really no time. I think I might be a workaholic. lol
I have a beautiful lien skirt that the waist is about 1.5 inches too tight now. The seams are.serged and i dont have extra fabric. I suppose the only way to make it fit again would be to remove the top band completely and make a new one with new or lowered zipper..UGH...
I use a Janome. Just the basic model. They cost around AUD$400 in Australia. The thing is that doing clothes alterations does not require an industrial machine. Just a normal basic sewing machine that does straight stitch and zig zag. And buttonholes. And just a normal standard overlocker. Clothes alterations is not like dressmaking, or piece work like manufacturing. It is just about taking in or taking up garments.
