Welcome to Jams & Tea! Here we talk about the latest and greatest in music and music culture. We are a collective of friends from across the globe, an ever-expanding family taking an earnest and in-depth look at albums and phenomena in the music world every week. We usually release three videos a week - in the first we review two new releases, in the second we talk about the latest in music news as well as a new weekly discussion topic, and we also celebrate (and sometimes castigate) records new and old in our Record Club series.

Beyond music, we have film discussion, anime and video game content, long-form creative projects and much more, so stick around - odds are, we have something for everyone!

I think a great self titled album that is not a debut is Ty Segall (2017) It came out after emotional mugger which was a departure from his other projects and has some of the same tones yet harkens back to his garage pop sensibilities. The new mars volta record was quite good too but don't think is exactly up to par with their old material.

@@SevenQRTRS We thought similarly about TMV! We’re all enormous fans and appreciated the direction but it wasn’t quite scratching the same old itch. I haven’t heard near enough from Segall so I’m gonna make this a priority to get to, had no idea about that bit of context! Thank you!

Laura Marling isn’t talked about enough, and similarly this video deserves way more views and likes. This was an extremely satisfying geeking-out sesh over her discography! I listened to the whole 3 hours of it and enjoyed the in-depth analyses and different points of view. You raised many great points that made me want to go and re-listen to all the albums. I don’t know anyone in real life who’s as into her music as I am so this definitely has filled that void. I hope you will discuss her next album Patterns when it comes out. I’m curious, did Creature eventually grow on any of you? For me, it’s right up there with Speak and Eagle, so I was surprised it was a unanimous no, especially since I hard-agreed with at least one of you about all her other albums.

53:45 I like the figure of speech "DDTM defence forces" and I would like to join it too😂😂 To me DDTM is Foxing's most joyful album, or as all Foxing's albums have their own distinct style, so I cannot say which album is best for everyone but for myself, S/T is my #1 because I just like screaming (That's why I still can't listen to Dealer repeatedly because it can calm me down which is not bad haha)

My favorite non-debut self-titled album is Warren Zevon's 2nd album. His debut in 1969, Wanted Dead or Alive is sloppy at best and feels like it could've been made by any number of wannabe singer-songwriters of that era. Warren Zevon (the album) falls into the category Ryley mentioned of reinvention, where he's come forward with a richer, more mature sound and a better defined personality in his writing. As for Nilüfer Yanya, loved the big singles, Like I Say (I Runaway) sounds like a 90s Smashing Pumpkins song with that rich, buzzing guitar tone, and Mutations is an obvious stand out. It's good, but doesn't stick with me. Foxing's new album is the best I've heard from them. While I found their previous album veered too much into sounding like the backing music to a truck commercial, this record cannot be accused of that. It's blistering, brutal, and even uncomfortable at times, shout out to Hell 99, one of their best tracks. Although, I can't help but feel that record's runtime burns me out.

The new Nick Cave is lovely. Really felt like a more grounded return to a Push the Sky Away kind of malaise that I really love about his later work that I lnow isn't for everyone. Magdalena Bay was weird, I kinda felt the same way as you all about Mercurial World but Imaginal Disk was something I didn't expect. Some of those songs like Watching TV were kind of weird to adjust to because they were such different kidns of music than the singles and the more immediate songs were, but I actually found it to fit really neatly into the concept of the album about self perception in a digital world- I kind of interpret the album to be about a 'procedure' where someone actually has an 'imaginal disk' of their inner desires projected into it, and it's got a lot of topics and themes about self discovery, identity, and love that I feel like support that. To me the arc of the album is about this hypothetical patient having this procedure done, but the flow of the album shows them becoming more and more disillusioned with themselves now that they have all their projected desires and a 'perfect version' of themselves. There's a point in the record where confronting that perfect version sets off a mental spiral, where you see the 'perfect' you and become keenly aware of all the perceived flaws you see in yourself because of the obvious difference between the two, and that's where the album becomes less tightly structured and a bit more playful but I think its really necessary to drive home the self exploration, and ultimately tightens up at the end when they arrive at a point of self acceptance. Honestly Im still piecing it together but theres a lot of stuff in it that I don't see talked about in reviews and its my AOTY rn so I just wanted to spill about it a lil bit haha. It's so nice to see august again on the show! Also would love to know what Jake thinks of it too!!!

Read the book, study the event, then you'll understand the plot you believe doesn't go anywhere, although it's directly related to how Bob got involved and how tension began with the actual disappearance of Wood, Jesse's cousin, which comes back around to Jesse realizing Dick was caught. It's incredibly accurate to how it went down, which is why the film is so brilliant

I've been waiting months for a discussion on the new Everything Everything from you guys and i'm so glad it's finally here. Now me personally, not only do i love Mountainhead but i think it's their best album since Get to Heaven. I feel like this album is really well rounded on the whole, has some of their all time best songs (Wild Guess, Cold Reactor and Enter the Mirror all being fantastic for instance), is produced wonderfully and feels like a really strong distillation of what i love about the band, namely the energy they bring, the infectious melodies, the eccentric songwriting and their emotional side. I do agree the stretch from TV Dog to Don't Ask Me to Beg isn't great. But even then, i still find enough captivating moments in those tracks where they don't bring down the whole listening experience for me. All around, i think the album is wonderful and will go down as a sleeper hit in their catalog alongside A Fever Dream. I totally get why fans including you guys don't click with it but i found a lot about it to love. As for some of the other albums you guys have discussed, i enjoyed MGMT, The Smile and Brittany Howard's albums quite a bit. Neither of them are amazing for me or anything but they have a lot about them i enjoy (though MGMT did take me a while for me to click with for good reasons).

There a lot of similarities between this film and Road to Perdition. Both dark, figurative and literal films with amazing cinematography. Both have amazing scores. None of the main characters are good guys or bad guys. You have two beloved actors with Hanks and Pitt both playing characters way outside of their normal roles. I feel they are both performances are underrated and under appreciated. Both death scenes are eerily similar.

I can't relate to your ranking of Steely Dan's albums. Maybe it's me not you? Nah! I think context, in terms of exposure to the music, is key for my preference. I discovered Steely Dan when I purchased an 8 track version of Can't Buy A Thrill (CBAT), and it served as the foundation for evaluating subsequent albums. I began listening to CBAT in my car, and it went round and round for weeks, searing the songs into my brain. In my opinion, the one thing CBAT has that the subsequent productions lack is a groove. The songs fit together and complement each other. As you mention, the other albums have high points, but I always find myself skipping through to get to the meat. So for me, CBAT is ranked at the top, and I liken it to the stellar debut album of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, with subsequent albums falling short on impact. Same with Steely Dan. One critique that I have of your review, is that compared to similar RU-vid rankings of Steely Dan, I found yours to be most confusing. I must admit that seeing CBAT ranked so low made me question the rest of your review (not even in the top 4?). One thing that really confused me was the word salads/adjectives used to describe the songs. Suggest distilling your takes on songs, as I was frequently left questioning what you actually meant (less if better). But I salute your appreciation for Steely Dan, as their music is a remarkable achievement that future generations will undoubtedly also appreciate.

Just my interpretation here. Brandon and I are from the same area. Drunk driving culture is pretty normalized here, and basically just accepted even though it has terrible consequences. Skin meadow, and Daytona 500 elucidate on this very well. In fact think of 'Skin Meadow' as a mondegreen for 'skin, metal' like a fusion of our flesh to the guard rails and other vehicles on impact. If you listen close when Brandon starts his vocal part on Skin meadow, he's saying 'skin, metal.' I also think it's a lot about normalized tragedy and our strange tolerance to terrible events that are treated like currency in our outrage culture we have in the west. It's like an illustration on just how insane modernity is and how it's affecting our species. It feels hopeless. Also, I believe we are all 'The Whaler' society at large. Taking something organic and resourceful and taking until there's nothing left over to get anymore. It's the mission of modernity.
