this was invaluable, I was wondering how difficult it would be to make ceramic beads from a two part mold, thank you so much for showing your process!

I suppose that this video may get some people interested in beads. But then they will have to unlearn all the mistaken ideas, attributions, and poor terminology it also includes.

As an anthropologist I've been intrigued by the cultural significance of beads for a long time in different parts of the world. Since I also teach history this presentation is perfect as an introduction to global trade and cultural interaction for my students. Thank you for uploading!

Thanks, Janne. The information in my short video is largely based on the book, The Universal Bead, by Joan Mowat Erikson pubklished in 1969. When I came across this book, I was totally intrigued by the amount of information and her wonderful story telling ability; if you can find it, buy it!

Sorry, there are no acrylic beads associated with this video; this is all about handmade clay and glass beads.

really beautiful to watch....it perfectly expresses why I have been attracted to beads for years...the sense of aesthetics and calm they elicit can not be replaced...little else is so simple.

Hi, I loved this video! I would like to try this. What kind of clay will I need? Earthernware or stoneware? Also what is terra sigillata? Is it some kind of glazing material? Is it a required item or can be skipped?

Polymer clay is very tough IF you condition and cure it enough. and bake long enough at the correct temp. Much stronger than ceramic or glass!

Boy, did I love seeing this... and, by the way - I LOVED the music... anyway - i'm kinda new in the hand-building clay thing... but I fell for my next step into ceramics with the info you gave here! In other words, it was inspirational. And - It was real helpful for me the way this video is pictures, with written words, and cool music. Thank you!

I love the video and your beads are very cool. Where can I get a tray like that, does the clay not stick to it? I am trying to fire ceramic buttons and need a way to make sure they don't fuse to the stilts.

This was a terrific video for You Tube, you did a great job... May I also suggest, if you make beads and the hole isnt great, prior to bisquing use pipe cleaners to clean them... Great video, thanks.

Carve channels in the mold around the sculpture cavity to allow excess to flow into and make sure the offset is thin enough to cut off this excess.
@josephknightcom

When making the mold place two marbles at alternate corners of the inside of one half of the mold. Make sure the marbles are not more than half submerged. Once that half of the mold is hardened remove the marbles. Then when you make your other half it will fill in the marble indentations creating a peg-and-hole locking mechanism that helps you better align your pieces. But this will only work right if the two mold pieces are coming completely together and flush upon pressing. See next comment...

THANK YOU!!!! I teach a fine craft class at a Southern Maine High School. Study of the history of beads is one of the craft choices. This is PERFECT! It is what I had them research in bead books and it is a perfect supplement for my class.
