Just like old Irvine, most of the old Kilmarnock destroyed for a shopping centre. Surprised there's no pictures of the old Glenfield and Kennedy. I used to work there and so did my great grandfather (both of us fitter/ turners)
I’m sure we’ll someday get to see mid to late 1980s and early 1990s colour pictures of the Foregate as well as pictures of the ABC cinema at Titchfield Street, Halifax and Bank of Scotland’s Nelson Street and John Finnie Street branches, The Royal Bank of Scotland’s John Finnie Street, Low Glencairn Street and Portland Street/Kilmarnock Cross branches, Bank of Scotland’s Bank Street and Low Glencairn Street branches, WHSmith and John Menzies at the corner Portland Street and Kilmarnock Cross and at King Street, the head-post office and sub-post offices at John Finnie Street, the Foregate and in Bonnyton, New Farm Loch, Bellfield, Riccarton, Beansburn, Knockinlaw, Onthank and Beansburn with the 1975 Post Office logo, the railway station’s building and tunnel and both ends with the 1983 Strathclyde Transport logo, BMK’s office building and Riverside Mills factory, the Safeway supermarket and petrol station at West Shaw Street and Barbadoes Road, the Douglas Rayburn and Gleneagles carpet yarn and shoe factories at Mill Street, The Burns Inn at Low Glencairn Street, the Royal Mail sorting office at Nelson Street, Tesco and Iceland with the 1970 and 1989 logos at Fowlds Street, J.H. Donald at Titchfield Street, McMasters at King Street, the police station at St. Marnock Street, the Rowallan Creamery dairy factory, the William Low supermarket, the petrol station, the row of shops and the Howard Park Hotel at Glasgow Road from that time period, a late 1980s/early 1990s picture of Kilmarnock Bus Station on Green Street at the view from the east during the A1 and Western Scottish era and mid to late 1990s pictures of the Bellfield Tavern at Wellbeck Street, Queens Drive Retail Park featuring Asda, Burger King, KFC, Odeon, Glenfield & Kennedy, Comet, B&Q and other places, Glencairn Retail Park featuring Aldi, Matalan, Focus, Carpetright, Poundstretcher, Fads, Comet and Pizza Hut and the Burns Mall’s entrance near Greggs as well as Coral at John Finnie Street, Route 66 and Global Video at Fowlds Street and Titchfield Street preferably in colour.
Nice photos. I forever rememberKimarnock when it had Lauders, the Plaza cinema, the Kiosk Cafe, Campbells and Radio Doctors for the toys and the Regal. McMurrays and House of Fraser for quality department stores……..and the 5Th Dimension space age maze at Girvan.
Great wee video. I was brought up in Hurlford, born 1960, so I recognized many places, but some were before my time. My aunt Jean lived at 10 Charles Street for a few years, so that photo was interesting.
@@jacquelineheronwray6782 never mind & thanks I come from Kilmarnock and it’s great to see the photos I thought one of the guys looked a lot like my grandfather but it may have been way too early ..
Hi Jackie, loved your photos of old Kilmarnock. How things have changed and not for the better! You might remember me we were at the Grange Academy together, l now live in Chelmsford in Essex l have done for the last 23 years and work for the NHS on London. Glad you are doing well and I hope the book is selling well. Kind Regards Colin Martin
Great to hear from you Colin. Oh how times have changed? It is amazing how do many of us from Grange Academy have found ourselves so far flung! Best wishes to you and yours.
@@jacquelineheronwray6782 Hi Jackie, Lovely to hear from you, yes l have traveled the world in my procurement career especially in my time in the pharmaceutical industry. You are right a lot of us have come a long way from King Street to where we have been and where we are now! Just to say my oldest and best friend you might remember was Graeme Ritchie incase you didn’t know Graeme passed away in September 2019 l still speak to Shirley (Greg) his wife every week and she is doing ok. All the best to you and yours Colin x
What a wonderful set of photos, the old infirmary one and the annanhill golf course touch a wee memory for me as I ended up in the infirmary for stitches playing golf at the pitch and putt in the 80’s after get clocked on the head with a follow through by 1 of my friends 😂😂accident right enough but he hit a great shot 😂
Stumbled across your videos from old Kilmarnock, amazing! In this video there's a slide from Bank place but I don't think it was from 1989, perhaps 1889 maybe? :P amazing though, Thank you for these.
Thank you for your catalogue of images of Kilmarnock and Ayrshire. I too was born (very) near Crosshouse and valued the past photos and details on Andrew Fisher. I worked in Victoria where in the city of Ballarat (a city built by Scots gold miners) all the past Australian federal PM's have a stone carving (up to Malcolm Turnbull and including Fisher). Few Victorians had heard of Andrew Fisher and many were impressed I knew how he was. I was astonished to read he had only died 28 years before I was born. I too have returned to Scotland in retirement and enjoy many of the places you have highlighted having taken them for granted growing up. Just my view but there were far too many destructive planning mistakes in the seventies! The Rozelle art gallery is a personal favourite of mine.
Thank you! I can only agree with your sentiments. Ayr has lost much of its charm and character in my opinion. It is good to know Andrew Fisher has a statue,I will try to find a picture of it. I hope you don't miss Australia too much? I have written a short piece about Andrew Fisher ,Belleisle,Roselle and Craig House. If you are interested you can find them at www.jacquelineheronwray.com Thank you for getting in touch.
The days when Kilmarnock buildings had style. Had to laugh at the fact one of the photos was from the 1970’s, when I was a kid there. I really wish you could just jump into those photos for a while to have a look around Killie from those days. Thanks for doing this and putting it all together. I did notice a couple of things, at 0:49 the photo is Glencairn square not the Dick Institute, at 1:09 Bank place looks like 1889, not 1989……unless my 1989 memories are playing up on me and we DID dress like that then…..Brilliant to see Killie through the ages and I appreciate the work that goes into it all.
This is great. Brings back loads of memories of my childhood, some of which were half buried. Thanks for all these photo’s, I loved it. You just wish you could jump into them and spend some time there😉
The old A1 bus station. I remember round the back of it there was a window displaying a model bus. When they were knocking the bus station down, I tried to get that model as a kid but no way was I getting it. Love old Kilmarnock, not so much what it became…..
Goodness, this was a real treat! I am old enough to remember from experience some of the pictures, but the older ones were just wonderful to see, thank you so much!
@@SJ47668 Hi, no it wasn't a PowerPoint. It syncs with the music and I try to choose the slowest I can find on offer. Not great with technology I am afraid!
If you click on the three dots icon you can adjust the speed of the video. I played it at 1/4 speed and its perfect that way. Still paused it every now and then when there was too much to take in.
