My name is Maurizio, I'm a pianist with a passion for synthesizers and electronic music. Based in Roma (Italia), I play synthesizers and I like to share my own music as well as tips and tricks on this channel.
About twice a month I post a video on synthesizers, whether it is my own track or a small tutorial.
shame they don't understand the arp MUST be on and off on the entered steps as on the digitone or the deluge. The ONLY one devices with live arp function.....shame
Very nice! Isn't the SH-4d just a joy to use!! It's so straight-forward!! I find I'm constantly making some IDM or acid with my SH-4d. It makes so much sense compared to my other synths that it almost feels like cheating!! I recommend pairing the SH-4d with another groovebox with a more advanced drum machine or sampler, and tempo syncing the two devices via midi. I typically pair mine with my Korg Drumlogue for some notably more dynamic breaks/beats that aren't just limited to the classic (but used to death) 606, 808, 909 electronic drum sounds. Of course it doesn't have to be a Drumlogue. I've heard some very dynamic percussion coming out of the TR6s and the MC101. I just happen to own a Drumlogue and enjoy combining the analog drums with sampled breaks. But with four tracks of robust digital synthesizer engines, and a basic drum machine with some per-step editing options, the SH-4d is great for getting down the main melodic elements of a song... and to be even more honest... its fucking easy and fun to use!! My wife owns an Arturia MiniFreak and MicroFreak. In my opinion, the SH-4d is like having 4 MiniFreaks and a Boss Dr. Rhythm... for almost the same price as one MiniFreak. So it's an economically sound synth investment as well!! Keep on keeping on!! Cheers from Delco!
Thank you. I am perplexed as to why the SH-4D is not more popular and discussed more often. It can do so much in such a small package. I bought mine for the $500 sale price; even more amazing at that price.
There Is some hate going on with the SH-4d but I don't care, I love It. Thanks for sharing!

This hiss doesn't sound like a USB ground loop, at all. It sounds like the compressor is raising the whole noise floor like all compressors do, especially with the Golden Master auto make up gain. So I think it depends more on the compression settings than anything else. Have you made any further experiments to tackle this down?
Cheers - is it easy t to change the sounds via MSB LSB PROGRAM CHANGE? I did find them online (eventually) for the user banks & presets & drums as that would be wild using an external sequencer.
@@malvinusmusic yes totally - I did actually find a site which had them listed easily enough but still haven't seen a demo of them being changed - would be great to do with Logic Pro 11 or even Reaper live. Great video as it gives me hope this can be done.
@@malvinusmusic Thats okay but if it Ableton can do it; anything can! I did actually find them online & I'm hoping they are similar to the MC 707 as well. I'm still rocking the JV 1010 from 1999 & other gear MSB 87 LSB 0 : USER TONES 1 MSB 87 LSB 1 : USER TONES 2 MSB 86 LSB 0 : USER RYTHM KITS Test them out in Ableton let me know how it goes I've used MSB LSB PC before on Live but be interested to know if this thing can hack it - all good either. way mate. Great sounds & video - will have to crank this on my studio monitors sometime as I'm thinking about that & the Korg Electribe 2 sampler version. Dave from little old Adelaide.
Hi, unfortunately you can't split SH-4d to play two sounds at the same time. You can layer them by setting each part to the same MIDI channel, but you can't split them unless you have a keyboard controller that let's you transmit on two or more separate MIDI channels. Thanks for your appreciation, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic i have Roland A-88 midi keyboard it has dual/split function and upper lower buttons. İ'm thinking i can use it with sh-4d by well adjustment :)
Sounds a bit like an Amiga tracker tune - not such a bad thing - but a bit lo-fi. Really wanted to love my SH4D, but it's gone to somebody else now - limitations on sound quality (aliasing/voice stealing with 4 layers of complex sounds) and some UX frustrations (no un-quantized recording/long recordings, patch storage mechanisms) and synth engine frustrations (no individual oscillator pan (and no voice pan spread) /only one LP filter type, limited modulation) were too much even though I love the portability of this device (USB C cable for everything was very nice and it's such a compact unit yet with plenty of controls).
I get your complains, after more than a year of use I tend to think of it as a compact-well-sounding synth module. I tend to not use its built-in sequencer, I prefer pairing it with Oxi One or an Elektron sequencer. As for the lofi sound I think you're right, that's why I will try to improve the quality of samples in the future. Thanks for stopping by, I do appreciate your contribute, cheers!
Came across your channel after purchasing the SH-4d. Your videos are very useful, and this video is very inspiring. Thank you for the new perspective :)
I been waiting for a piece of gear like this, I'm a newer music producer and I'm still learning. This seems to be a great box to help generate ideas and learn track composition. I don't understand the hate toward this device. Looks great to me.
The hate is because of some flaws regarding the groove box functions but if we look at It as a four parts plus rhythm part synthesizer, as the writing on it says, we all can almost agree it is a nice sounding machine. Love it too, thanks for stopping by!
This machine is just fantastic but I wish there could be an easiest way to save your work (the options overwrite, pattern+tone and tone are just confusing), the small delay after changing pattern is annoying and sometimes tone parts just don't play anything (happened a couple of times). All of those are not a dealbreaker for me as I know just a firmware upgrade should be enough to fix them. Great videos, thanks!
My unit is safe and sound after more than a year :-) knobs and sliders are almost as they where when I purchased It. Thanks for your appreciation of my work, I'm flattered!
Unfortunately, when using USB audio, I hear audio from both the DAW and the device itself. The sound is doubled. It is unclear how to leave only the sound that comes from USB (DAW). Without this setting, multitrack recording doesn't make much sense.
You are right, the behavior of the instrument is wrong. But multitrack recording still has a usefulness, in an upcoming video I will try to show it. Thank you for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic I have found an acceptable solution! Press Shift + MFX and set Switch=ON and Level=0. Then: Menu->System Settings and set USB In to MFX=OFF. The signal will sound only from the DAW.
I search and watch videos like this because I need to decide which box to buy for my live setup. This is a great video for my purposes and in its own right. I have to say, the title could have been more on topic. I think the word "tutorial" might cause some hate for what they get while watching
I've heard this one is their most underrated box. There is a lot you can do with it. But the real pull of it is the quickness of getting ideas out. Some have sold it, but that's because they don't dedicate their time to the instrument. There is a lot you can do with it. I've heard some sound designers have made sound packs from this device alone. It's great for a total beginner, and anybody looking to dip their toes in elektron.
I'd say well kept secret rather than underrated... Anyway Is a great sounding machine for sounds and for its trusty Elektron sequencer as well. Thanks for stopping by!
so, you did this live with stated aims....jobs done. i really like this little box. does more than it says on the tin. it jams with other synths on our local synth nights really well. most folk are impressed not just with the synth but the fact you can put a decent beat with the rhythm track. needs a bit of a firmware update but good to play, take with you and jam. youre a great champion
@@PHYZIK. I invite you to maintain respectful behavior, please. Regarding my video, it was meant to show without telling, I understand you didn't like it, it's a personal matter, it's okay
Boss Roland seem to be against updating the firmware on their products, but IMO the SH-4D could go from very good to fantastic with some tweaks. One thing I don't think you mentioned as a con is the saving system which I personally find antiquated and annoying.
A quick question. About a year ago you did a video about the "Save bug" ( it added a hick-up into the sound) was fixed with firmware so I will now do it. Are my files still ok after the firmware upgrade? Also, I remember in the beginning you had a template that I could copy and somehow get it on my SH-4D. Cannot find the video nor the template. Can you please refresh my memory where it is? Thanks!
