Why not just find a few good spots where you pay ? I think that the best places are in actual companies / businesses parking lots. Auto shops, tire repair place, glass repair, paint - auto body, cabinet shop, remodeling co, building, roofing co., Plumber shop, Electrician, Heat & Air Repair, you should rethink you approach. I have two vehicles, one with tools and the other is a my camper. Both are just basic pickup trucks with a good sheel on back. I pay $35.00 a month to park. I do not set out tools, tables or any stupid things. Keep it low key and most businesses close around 6pm in this small town location. Best of luck
Hi! Ended up here because im thinking of re-hiking the AZT and i'd do a little Hayduke detour through the Grand Canyon 😊😊 Loved your video, thank you! I'm just curious, since i'm still at the beginning of my planning. Do you have to wait for a raft to cross the Colorado River? Because I dont think theres another safe way to cross? If that's the case, then how many rafts are down there? I remeber there being a few rafts in the corridor when i was there two years ago but i wondered if theyre all going down to where i'd want to cross?
Hi there! That sounds like a most excellent plan! Are you thinking Southbound AZT or Northbound? Cause obviously Haydukers would be coming from North Rim side although I did meet AZT hikers who did the Hayduke route coming from South Rim because North Kaibab was still closed due to all the snow in ‘23. That’s to say I think it’d be easier and more options to get raft rides if you were coming from Nankoweap. In the guidebooks and such they say to get your ferry across around the Little Colorado River confluence but I got a ride from Kwagunt and other got rides from Nankoweap. However if you were going AZT southbound and doing the Hayduke route that would prob be in October and I believe most commercial companies stop running at the end of October so you’d have to keep that in mind. But there will still be private groups and such that could ferry you across you just might have to wait longer. If you are going Northbound in the Spring there will be lots of commercial companies but you’d only be able to cross after Little CO River confluence and you’d have to flag a group down. So that’s a long way to say yes you have to get a raft across! It’s the only way but it’s absolutely doable! Raft groups are notoriously kind and generous! I hope this helps and let me know if you need any other help in your planning!
@@SaraTideWalker thank you so much Sara! Sorry, I could have mentioned that: I’ll be going southbound in October. It’s good to know that the commercial groups will stop at some point during fall! I’ll keep that in mind. 2023 was definitely a wild year for the AZT hikers. I did it in 22 (nobo) and couldn’t believe the pictures compared to the conditions I had on my hike. Thanks for the info ☺️
I hiked the AZT nobo in ‘22 as well! What’s your trail name? I finished May 15th! I do really love that trail! I’ve been thinking of hiking it sobo as well just to see it from a different perspective!
@@SaraTideWalker no shit haha! I was probably always just ahead of you! I seriously love this trail! I think I’d consider doing it nobo again just for the flowers, but I can only take the time off work during fall, sooo… and I’m sure sobo is gonna be just as beautiful and definitely a different perspective!
Hi! You definitely should! It’s about 40 miles and it took me about 7 hours with several stops. I give a more detailed account of the trip on my website if you want to check that out. www.whereintheworldissara.com/north-america/2023/2/15/biking-cozumel-loop
I have to say that is the best gear video I have ever seen. Nicely done. Can I borrow your no bullshit approach? I did a gear video that just showed the gear sitting there, that’s it😂. I will be starting the Bama to Baxter route on Oct 2 2024. So sick of the typical “Happy Trails” so Tickled Trails to You
Thanks! Yeah I just wanted to mix it up so all my gear videos weren’t the same-me talking about my junk! I also like your tickled trails 😂 Best of luck to you on your hike!
Just ordered one, thanks for the tip! My new fav is the Poe and Co.: coconut chickpea stew. It’s amazing, and currently at garage grown gear. I add freeze dried beef from trailtopia, wrap it in a tortilla and it tastes like amazing Jamaican street tacos! Po and co is sooooo good, I get your passion for food:) hike on! I’m glad you have the chance to see the world:)
I’d never heard of Peak Refuel either but I just bought a few meals from REI, looking specifically for vegan ones. I was very pleased! It wasn’t spicy at all. I hope you like it!
I don't think I've seen that Peak Refuel label, but since you're so over the top about it, I'll look for it. I usually avoid Indian food because it's too spicy hot for my Scandinavian taste buds. Iceland is quite the contrast since your Hayduke adventure. - Steve
You need a small amount of alum to add to the murky water that Settles out silt before you use the Sawyer Squeeze. We carried a lightweight collapsible pail to settle out water.
Did the first 600 miles in 2015 and 17. You aren't showing a bunch of the trail, right? Courthouse Wash was definitely easier than the slickrock alternate. Wish you would have said where you actually were to be able to follow you. We also created our own walk around pourovers. We used the GPS track of Li Brannfors. We did get cliffed out sometime and used animal paths. We basically just rolled our own trail.
I'm sad your journey is over (this one, for now). I had not heard of the Hayduke route before I stumbled across your channel. I don't think I'll ever be able to do it, but I sure would love to! Thank you.
You look like my twin sister😍😂, and you were on the trail about one month after me this year. I only had time do Moab to the end of the Salt Creek alt. more to come though! Thank you for taking the time to make a video, I look forward to watching your experience further down the trail!
Yes! You could totally be my sister, or at least cousin. If I could attach a pic here, I would:) recently discovered your channel, and am inspired and entertained by your adventures. Thank you for YouTubing!
Wow Sara! When I met you last year on Hole in the Rock Road and learned about your hike, I thought you were amazingly inspirational. So I've watched your Hayduke videos - now I'm more like stunned! Your perseverance on such an amazing and incredible hike nearly leaves me at a loss for words. Thanks for sharing the Grand Canyon. I haven't been there since 2010, and now I really want to visit it again. Thanks so much for sharing this journey with us! - Steve
Aww thanks for your kind words Steve! It was an incredible hike! I look forward to hiking the section I missed in the Grand Canyon! It’s one of my favorite places!
I'll be adopting this lifestyle in 10 years from today. van life gives you more freedom to go anywhere you want in your van, and see places you've never been before.
Just found your channel and subbed. Very cool adventures you have been on. I do have a question, I've looked through all of your older videos and I didn't find any that give information on how you afford all of this. If you have the time could you let me know how it is your able to afford to do what you are doing? I would love to adventure like this. I'll be watching the rest of your hayduke hike. Thanks
Hi! I’m glad you found my channel! That’s a good idea, maybe I can make a video where I go into talking how I afford this adventure lifestyle. Basically, I don’t have debt or a family to support allowing me this freedom. I work temporary seasonal jobs and live a frugal lifestyle like living in my campervan, petsitting, and staying at my childhood home from time to time. My yearly income is below poverty level but I have saved money over the years and with all the other factors I mentioned I make it work!
Thank you for posting this!!! I am going on a cruise and want to get some training miles in and would love to explore!! Any tips? I'm looking into renting a bike!
I did not realize there was a trail/route named after George Washington Hayduke! One of my favorite characters. You don't look like a Vietnam era, Green Beret medic though. Good luck on your great adventures! Hayduke lives!
Sara, I just happened upon this video, and it looks like you've posted another about your Hayduke adventure. I still think about running into you hiking out of Coyote Gulch on the Hole in the Rock road and feel like I should have helped you out with more than a beer from my cooler. At least the chips were intact in your cache - shows how much the little things count. I look forward to seeing more from your hike. Steve
Hi Steve! Yes I’m finally uploading all my Hayduke videos- there will be about 10 in all! The next one on Sunday will be the section that I met you and I give you a shoutout!
Oh thank you! I’m glad to have these videos that I can look back at years from now and be reminded of the grandness and beauty of it all! And how it wasn’t easy but I persevered!
