Dark Knight always struck me as very poor storytelling. I think they made a list of interesting scenes and didn’t make much effort to tie them together. There is one short scene where a policeman mutters something and then runs off. Every time I see that I think: “What the heck was that?” The whole Harvey Dent, 2-Face “RACHEL!” storyline was irritating and pointless.

I can’t stand movies that glorify gangsters and here there are 5 of them. Why cheer on the end of civilization? If you like that stuff then you should include Birth of a Nation or Triumph of the Will

Good to see others adding movies but odd that they seem to blame you for not adding them. You explained how you came up with the list and even said the ranking of some movies would not be your choice. Some would not be mine either. But there are a number of these I've not seen so will make an effort to see them. Or see them again if it's been decades since I've seen them. My only comment regards your observation of the number of gangster movies on the list. As a general rule I don't like movies where the obvious villains are the main characters. The Godfather is the perfect example although Bonnie and Clyde might be a better example. It would be curious to see if the top 30 lists from other countries, without the impact of American lists, would include so many.

I've seen all but 3 of these. Personally, I wouldn't have included the French housewife film, Do The Right Thing or Singing In The Rain either. I think there are a ton of great films that deserve being on the list more. Saving Private Ryan, No Country For Old Men, Fargo, The Unforgiven, Alien, 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Wizard of Oz, etc.

I think I would've included at 1978 Superman movie, A Clockwork Orange, the original 1954 Godzilla, and maybe the Exorcist...just my two cents.

The Greatest Film ever made is 'La Strada' by Fellini. Among great films there are a lot of second rate even rubbishy films on the list. 'Schindler's List' faces an insurmountable problem. You can't make. Or you can't make it honestly without the audience rushing out vomiting and weeping. Then without noting that the most terrible thing about this film is that many times the victims become the victimizers. So for the second part to make the film honest you need another film set within the victims of Gaza & the 80 years of Palistinian victimisation before. Then back to the terrible history of anti-semitism. On that see another film that needs to be in this list 'The Shop on The Main Street.' With many others. No, though it has great films as the top 30 films it is rubbish. And no 'Ivan's Childhood'? Go fxxx yourself fellow.

Numbers 25, 24 , 21 must be a joke. In the best thirty films of all time? Joke. You can't start a video essay about taking cinema seriously and suggest that anybody watch Star Wars, or Batman. Get real.

Last words: 2001 might be the greatest endeavor ever. Basically silent. Chaplin’s “Times” could be another one. We love this craft. Best film ever made? We have no idea. Francis’ “Outsiders” ripped me apart. The original “Insomnia” blew my mind. As a musical, “The Sound and of Music” is the best thing I’ve ever seen. So, that’s it. No perfect answer to this multi-million film industry. Thanks for this magnificent show!

I’m absolutely amazed at your take. We are professors. Nobody is ever going to agree with us. I wouldn’t agreee with your list without Fanny och Alexander. Or how a short story became such a masterful piece like Stand by Me. I’m not absolutely sure about this one: Billy Elliott directed (as a first timer on film) by Stephen Daldry. And, above all, Metropolis… But, then, there’s The Exorcist. As with Jaws, they changed everything. I absolutely agree with you: there’s no way to get the list “right”. You are the first film teacher I agree with. Hollywood had its time, sometimes. This is the best list I’ve ever seen. I just miss Fanny och Alexander and The 400 blows. Maybe a couple more. Wow! You rock!

The essence of lists like this isn’t the rank of the films or how incensed that we are that our favorite “blah, blah, blah” didn’t make the list, but it is to remind us of the wonderful film making we’ve seen, and nudge us to consider other greats we may have missed. Nice work.

I perused through the comments to check out the alleged omissions. We are truly blessed with a ton of great movies to watch. It doesn't make any sense to make a top 30 list. It would make more sense to make an open ended "diamond" standard list curated by let's say 100 international movie afficionados where everybody can suggest a set number of films every year and they are voted in or not in by the experts. Nevertheless, this particular list of top 30 is excellent as I agree with almost all the films I already know (just not with "Wonderful Life") and I immediately will work through the ones I don't know.

Blade Runner is one of my top 5 best ever. I cannot watch the directors cut it is terrible without the voice over. Took me a long time to find a DVD theatrical version with the voice over. I don't dislike the directors cut, I own a copy, it's just that I watched the original movie so many times it just seems strange without the voice over. I appreciate that even Harrison Ford thought it was unnecessary to have the voice over. Still one of my favorite movies with or without the voice over.

@@TheMediaInsider Because movies is serious business? Your eyes aren't lying to you. You don't need a crash course to know if the movie you're watching is trying to say something. Filmmakers aren't so smart that we can't comprehend their artistic genius.

This seems like a fine list and I've seen 2/3 of these movies but there are 8 movies from the 70's and only 2 from the last 30 years. It seems a little biased, not by the author of the video but perhaps by critics in general. I mean there are 2 movies from 1974 and another 2 from 1975 alone.

Ok, I am not telling you what movies had to be in that list instead of X or Y, because it is not even your list but just a collection of best lists as you mentioned not just once.😊 From these 30 movies (I probably would had done a top-50 list) I only haven’t seen 5 of them and only of one of them I never heard of (Jeanne Dielman).
