Diegetic and non-diegetic sound explained for film analysts.
Using a range of examples, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Blade Runner, Gravity, and Metropolis, this video explores how removing certain elements of sound can actually be more effective than including it. The key terms diegetic and non-diegetic sound are examined and their various uses covered too.
The Media Insider is a channel for all things media and film. If you are studying them or just an enthusiast, subscibe for regular doses of theory and film analysis.

Great video. Another movie which works geniusly with the omission of sound is sound of metal. Watching it almost brings you into a meditative state. It's really done masterfully.

Great, as per usual. My first thought is the lack of dialogue at the beginning of There Will Be Blood and the scene when his son goes deaf. You've already done that in Mise en Scene though, so I understand the choice. Keep em coming!

Your videos are great and the clarity with which you deliver your topic is superb. Suggestion - how about a lesson on using a green screen for beginners/novices - if you can, book me a front row seat!

Could you make a video about Codec and Container because I'm currently studying media studies and would be cool to make a video about the topic!?

could you do a video for different theories such as Todorov's theory of narratology within cold openings of a long-form tv drama and how to effectively use theories to analyse a cold opening - thank you

I recommend a scene in the Gardian of the Galaxy II, where Yondu (the guy who fights with a flying pen) and the raccoon fight their way out of the ship of Yondu (which was hijacked by his crewmates (imposters)). Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RXbFP2V_zSA.html My feeling is that diegetic sound functions as an indicator of distance between audience and the scene, while background music dictates the emotion. Close distance invites the focus on the immediate appearance of the scene as presented, while far distance invites a sort of abstract interpretation, searching for symbolic meaning, of the scene. Lacking BGM is to delegate the emotion control to the scene, which requires a well-built scene to work. This is like a sculpture lacking certain parts makes it even more beautiful. The imagination, the natural extension of the scene/sculpture only intensifies its emotion/beauty. Contrastive BGM creates a vector that points towards the intensity of emotion. A joyous fight even when it is Yondu killing people mercilessly; a miserable memory even when it is the beloved children playing on the grass.

Um, the other reason is that there is no sound in outer space...That's why Gravity was so much scarier especially when she is tumbling away because unless something else gets her she would never, ever, ever, stop!
