Have you come across this article which suggests replacing grains with sunflower seeds for pregnant and lactating does to avoid enterotoxemia? Title: "Fighting the Deadly Enterotoxemia Disease Nutritionally" juniperpublishers.com/nfsij/pdf/NFSIJ.MS.ID.555681.pdf

I know nothing about goats other than having read one article, but I had preeclampsia at the end of my first pregnancy which became worse just after delivery (and that's not very common, usually it resolves after the delivery) and so I googled to see if goats can get that too. I'm not sure if the mechanisms are the same in goats as in humans because with goats they talk about toxemia, ketosis and a disturbed sugar metabolism, but I believe in humans, although they say they mostly do not know why some women get it, I have seen some studies sighting correlations when sugar is high in the diet. For humans they give magnesium to ward off seizures, but with goats, I'm not sure. One article talks about giving more grains, but I would think that our farmed livestock raised on grains would be more susceptible to such diseases as they would not normally be consuming so many grains in the wild I don't think. Similarly, humans are "fed" processed grains and sugars and that seems to be the root of many of our chronic illnesses. Sorry your little goat friend went to God a bit sooner than you expected. Hopefully she is doing well up there now and you'll see her again one day.

I got into goat herding because I felt led by the Holy Spirit to make food my medicine as God enables and equips me to overcome physical impairment issues from Fibromyalgia. I didn’t know that you must get a dairy specific goat to achieve this goal. I have 3 does and they blessed me with 5 beautiful bucklings in June. Three blue eyed like their dad Boots, a blue eyed Nigerian Dwarf , does are Rosey Nubian / Boer cross and Emerly and Zeevah are Nigerian/ Boer cross. There is no relation between Rosey and my other girls, but Zeevah and Emerly are half sisters. So we are banding Emerly’s buck baby, and keeping Zebadee in tact for Rosey and River in tact for the other girls. Will that be enough Dairy Goat lineage for greater supply and better fat content as well? I’m at the top of the waiting list for a Nubian doe for Spring 2025.

@@lindajohnson1035 it’s really hard to say until the goat is in milk. Their 2 or 3rd year will really show what they’re capable of. Thank you for your very swift response Delci, I’m just now sitting long enough to watch another of your videos on Copper and thought I will check comments here and you had already responded. My current three does have beautiful well formed udders with no pockets. They are still nursing their bucklings so I haven’t begun milking them yet. My hope is the three of them will provide enough milk for my husband and I with hopes of making my own butter, yogurt, cream cheese and 0:02 sour cream. My Vet told me I should not wean the boys until they are four months and they will turn 3 months old 13th-15th this month.
