I love that, despite all the ingenuity of a physicist, you were mostly thwarted by Wimpy. Squirrels are pretty darned smart! This was highly entertaining Claude. It was nice meeting you yesterday. Thanks for sending me here. Now off to look at your other squirrel vids!
Did you try spinning bird feeder, slinky or electric fence ? It can be a serious research job and a full-time job trying to stop them stealing birdseed - they're stubborn and clever! And for us, minutes of laughter
I thought about an electric fence. It would require a power supply similar to those used for goats. Not simply 120 volts as some commenters have suggested. Actually in the second video I demonstrate the best solution.
@@LyneisFilm OK, I'll go and have a look at that video. There are electric fences on 12 volt batteries or directly solar powered, but they're not cheap... But I was also thinking of the fun side, not forgetting the financial side which can become significant if you're not careful. High-voltage power supplies (with very low amperage) can be bought cheaply in China, and this little set-up, coupled with a timer, can be used to induce antics that are harmless to these animals. And because they have a good memory, they leave the seeds for the birds after "a certain time"... Best regards, Philippe
@@LyneisFilm That's what I've said, but I used "amperage" instead of "current", and "timer" instead of "periodic pulses". Very easy and cheap to build.
I believe squirrels are probably the most intelligent animals/rodents on earth. I have tried so many deterrents over the years and when I think I’ve finally figured out a way to keep them from eating and destroying my plants they win every time. Needless to say I no longer have a flower bed 😒.
We're just human. Our education is a lifelong process. Squirrels on the other hand are born with a master's degree in problem solving. This is of little use to them at first, but soon their tail grows longer and longer, and the length of the tail is directly linked to their determination and daring. These are not scientific facts of course, but anyone attempting to match wits with one will certainly agree. ;)
Get BROME squirrels prove bird feeders, I have few of them all around my house and works well, is a pricey feeders ,but very well solid built, THIS IS REALLY GOOD THING YOU BULT💪🤟👍
My cat loved this video. He didn't take his eyes off the screen a single time. He likes watching videos of mice and birds eating, but he's never been as captivated with a video as he was when watching wimpy navigate the various obstacles you set up for him.
That is amazing. I am working on a sequel and yesterday a squirrel named Scarlet was up on the bird feeder while a ferrel cat stalked it from below. Scarlet made a success escape and the gave the cat an earful.
You are correct. That whole sequence around the time 9:40 to 10:10 stars a male Fox Squirrel. There is a frame at about 10:10 that clearly reveals that is a male. Over the years I have learned that if you see anything under the belly region except tiny nipples, it is a male squirrel. So I think the Shirley character had more than one actor. Glad that you enjoyed the video. I am now (2024) working on a sequel.
Great job! I have a 1905 model that needs a "little" love. Can you suggest someone in the Montreal area? If not, any honest restoration expert will do. Thank you!
I was on the USS Carr doing opts with the Bonefish when it caught fire. I was the QM on duty. A day I will NEVER forget from the time the Bonefish asked our Capt. for permission to surface to the hatch opening on the sub and the crew just popping out and the ocean washing them into the water. God bless the 3 crew members who lost their lives in the fire. A day that lives in my mind forever.
As an avid birder and bird feeder ( and Eng tech 4 ) it took me a while of watching squirrel trigonometry in action. You can see the wheels turn. Here is the equation I''ve come up with. the feeder needs to be pole mounted with a baffle, it needs to be 8' away from any vertical jumping point, 5' from the ground with baffle and 10 from any overhang or branch. When a branch grows - I take it out - they come right back and start their calculations but are foiled once more. No squirrels or Shirley's on my feeder! Well of course there is an occasional gigantic raccoon that waltzes up there and lowers the baffle in the process and I have to go raise it again lol. Have fun - Where is this located? Cheers from Peggy in Madison, Wi ps I really enjoyed your video. Squirrel olympics -so much fun.
Il existe des graines pour les oiseaux qui sont aromatisées au piment 🌶 les oiseaux peuvent les manger sans danger alors que les mammifères comme les écureuils 🐿 sont repoussés par l’odeur et le goût.
Just love your efforts in taking on local squirrels, it's just amazing how smart they are. Here in Melbourne Australia we have no such animals as squirrels, only local possums. I love how you all coexist birds humans and squirrels, thank you so much
That is high praise. Thanks. I did take some video classes at the local community college after retiring. Audio recording and editing were especially helpful.
What does his title through an inculcation degree in an indoctrination university have to do with a bird feeder? Is it supposed to make it more impressive?
Thanks for bringing some great chuckles to my day!!! ☺️❤️ I'm home recovering from a major surgery, so I truly enjoyed your video.... This reminds me so much of Mark Rober's attempts at foiling the squirrels. Much like yourself, he had been a NASA space engineer. In his case, the squirrels definitely won, and he finally built an adorable "athletic course" and "buffet" for them. ☺️❤️🐿️
