After a squirrel defeats the rotating shield for a bird feeder, a physicist finds different way to way to protect it and keep peace with the birds and squirrels.
I lived outside for almost a decade. Out of all the animals that came around, the squirrels were by far the most tenacious and intelligent when they knew food was around.
Our Australia Shepherd would give a squirrel a good run in the tenacious and problem solving department. She's just not good at climbing trees. I've been entertained by her attempts to outwit the rabbits under the lawn tool shed. She's watched how the main rabbit reacts then tries a counter-measure. But rabbits aren't stupid either, as they can quickly adapt to the new tactics. Animals are amazing.
Honestly - I've always wondered why people wanted to prevent them from eating from the bird feeders...squirrels are 100 times more interesting than birds, imo.
@@MattTee1975 I put out enough for everyone, birds and squirrels, stray cats (I was able to foster one) so they don't go after birds and squirrels. It's magic when they both accept you into their society. When you really observe them, they have actual lessons to teach. Their actions have intent, and it's like watching a soap opera or sitcom every day.
When you think about it, he's really earning his food. Not only through working hard to get it, but also by providing entertainment which is then monetized through RU-vid.
We have a cast iron table on our front porch with my late inlaws silver plated turkey platter on top, that I fill every morning with "critter feed " for the neighborhood squirrels, birds, chipmunks, etc. We enjoy watching them as they munch on the feed and often peer into our picture window while enjoying their snack. Thank you for the wonderful video!
What a great story and from the perspective of a physicist! I love the way your kind heart comes through by soluting the intelligence of the squirrel in the end! Bless you and your family with good fortune and mercy!
My cat loved this video. He didn't take his eyes off the screen a single time. He likes watching videos of mice and birds eating, but he's never been as captivated with a video as he was when watching wimpy navigate the various obstacles you set up for him.
That is amazing. I am working on a sequel and yesterday a squirrel named Scarlet was up on the bird feeder while a ferrel cat stalked it from below. Scarlet made a success escape and the gave the cat an earful.
So glad you built squirrel it's own " cafe "and feeding it as well. I guess it earned it. Thank you so much for feeding the birds and ,of course, Wimpy.😁❤
I gotta give Wimpy more than 15 points! He got the Physicist to give in and just feed him! Maybe the Mrs. and the squirrel are in cahoots together against the Physicist! :o
@@danielb7495 no he didn't. He literally never gave up. He stopped going to the bird feeder because a squirrel feeder was put up. In the beginning he only "gave up" briefly to go get a snack he already knew how to reach.
I raised a little genius, when blown from his nest during a windy ice storm. My son named him Jerry. Jerry possessed amazing intelligence. His ability to learn, was far above any domestic animal that I've ever seen. He was free to patrol my home, and yes, he did patrol it he did. He also used his litter box, learned to catch, and do other tricks with few lessons. When Jerry matured, he longed to be free. We lived in the mountains, and the tree where he was blown from, was just outside my window, so giving him his freedom without worry, was pretty easy. I saw and fed him nearly every day. He had lot's of friends and also found a partner. Animals are a blessing to this sometimes, crazy world. Blessings and love.
@@nicoleparent9 Not superior, thats an observation of a flawed perspective. Actually inferior if required to exist in a natural, forested environment. The animals found their place in order to create balance within their environment without tools, without fire. Man in his bare skin is completely the opposite of superior in that environment.
Exellent idea . It would self limit the morbidly obese as they wouldn't be able to do the course . Plus you could set up a Pay per veiw " Fatty Cam " and give the money to a Covid charity , Win Win .
this made me smile. My dad loved to feed his birds and also was a physicist. The squirrel was his absolute nemesis and he went to great lengths to stop the little buggers. My dad has been gone for 10 years now and this made me remember him a little more today. so thank you xo
@@Nobody-ld7mk leave nature alone are you God to decide who shall eat and you will not !! He is just trying to survive like all life on earth !! Who’s the real bugger!!
@@sher64ct45 Ha! It's fun to play God & people feeding birds are doing the same. It's entertainment! Squirrel rats can survive just fine w/o bird food.
Bless you for caring for the precious squirrels. They are amazing critters. Keep in mind squirrels don’t eat your food then crap all over your nicely polished car!
And this is exactly what I have done...my squirrels have their own food box (very similar to yours) and the birds have their feeders. All is calm in the garden! Squirrels are so intelligent and persistent...I love them. xxx
@@LyneisFilm Interesting! We can have as many as a dozen in our backyard, and we usually make them come take peanuts from our hand. In the end squirrels are more interesting than birds. I mean it's cool to feed birds, but you can't get to know them "personally" as you can squirrels, squirrels are just easier to identify individually (at least for me). Different individuals have highly different behaviors, while also sharing highly similar traits. Like they almost all approach our hand-feeding "station" (a chair set right outside our patio slider) in a stylized and predictable manner that I assume is based on some innate "strategic reasoning" about what makes a path "safer," while at the same time they are perhaps easiest to keep track of (given how quickly/frequently their fur color changes) by behavior: some are timid, some are bold, some are aggressive and grabby, some take peanuts gently, etc.
My grandfather went through a similar exercise with a grey squirrel. Eventually, he came to admire the squirrel's persistence and obvious intelligence and finally made peace with him.
I wonder if kitty could catch a squirrel. We know they are experts at taking care of mice and chipmunk. Does kitty accept this challenge. I know u like the squirrel rodents. I like chasing them.
@@DM-ei6oo A muscular male farm cat who's an exceptional hunter/killer could take out a squirrel. That's IF the squirrel got caught. Growing up on the farm we had a Super Cat that easily took out rats and mink. Rats are nasty fighters and probably squirrels are equally agile and quick. We know they have teeth. LOL
I was so glad to see that you made a little feeder for the squirrel as well. Really good film, well made, great narration I wish I could give it two thumbs up but one will have to do for now
I can honestly say that the several squirrels in my backyard, are the best thing about living in this area. When I move after COVID, I will miss the squirrels more than the people here.
This is absolutely hilarious! My bird feeder squirrel problems went away when my new neighbor introduced 2 outdoor cats. They couldn't get to the bird feeder but the squirrels moved on.
How cute. Your video made me smile and reminisce of my past adventures with wild critters.I've come to the realization that once you name the critters they become part of your life, good or bad. I was thrilled that in the end you conceded that he was amusing enough to feed and keep around.
Great American storytellers are harder to find than adding a couple protons and neutron to a pre-existing element. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story.
Seed can get expensive… I bet you a PB&J sandwich would fit in his feeder!! ❤ TY for making him his own special feeder and for making this movie. Before the end I was thinking you should just make friends with him. The two of you can sit in the morning over coffee and nuts watching the birds together 😊
Thank you for making this video! My son is autistic and terrified of all animals, we watched the video together and he kept on repeating "I don't have to be afraid of the squirrel!" Videos like these help me expose him without fear or anxiety, it makes it easier for him to manage when we come across the real thing on our walks 😊
In all of your efforts, you actually trained (increasingly complex positive reinforcement) the squirrels to keep attempting your puzzle to receive a reward. It is like training your dog: whistling from you means a treat, then sitting and a whistle earns a treat, then sitting and giving a paw-handshake with a whistle earns a treat, etc.
@@altmant1 Squirrels help to spread seeds & they translocate fungus that protect the root of trees. They do more for this planet than most people. Guns aren’t necessary; unless you eat what you kill.
@@nancydiehl296 I think the birds can relocate seeds just fine. The bb gun is a quick solution for a rodent problem. If you would eat a wild rodent you have never seen the bad things they can carry. One example is a botfly.
Just love your efforts in taking on local squirrels, it's just amazing how smart they are. Here in Melbourne Australia we have no such animals as squirrels, only local possums. I love how you all coexist birds humans and squirrels, thank you so much
Well Claude this one made my wife and I smile and laugh to. So good how you did this, they sure are clever. The"Squirrel Cafe" was a nice touch. We thought it was great that you both don't mind them coming around and turn it into a friendly game. We thought this was just great to watch. Well done mate all the way from Brisbane Australia!!
While it's amusing to watch futile efforts to deter squirrels, I've always wondered why people don't just embrace the squirrels' presence in the yard and build them a feeder of their own. You did just that. Bravo to you sir!
Well done, Claude and Wimpy! I find my squirrels endlessly entertaining as they, too, try to get into the bird feeders. In fact, I like them so much that I allow access to certain ones!
@@LyneisFilm Human-like ersistence. And thinking outside the box, or sometimes full force in the box! E.g. when Red (or was it Shirley) leapt clean over the full shield in the other video.
My mom and dad had feeders for the birds and squirrels on their property. I always enjoyed watching them. Nice video. Fun to watch. A great example of what can be achieved when you “never give up”

You certainly have my appreciation. I have been in a two year battle with a large and cheeky male gray squirrel. He no longer can spill the bird food out of the feeder, so he trashes all of my wife's potted plants. now feed him Squirrel Delight (fruit and shelled nuts) and the birds black sunflower seeds and assorted wild bird seed. He still cleans the ground under their feeder, but can't access it. I'm calling it a draw, but Squirrelo knows he won.
Lovely video I so enjoyed watching this, my heart is thoroughly warmed by your kindness towards your garden visitors (and your wife in your submission to the elegant cone 😂). I think your squirrel friend is rightly very pleased with his cafe 🙏🧡 thank you for being awesome!
I'm pleased that you grew generous in the end. My goodness, what a lot of energy is expended in being restrictive, but I'm glad that you started feeding the squirrels in the end. It's the end that counts! Kudos to you.
I just loved watching the cleverness of Wimpy. Definitely made me smile. I have a pesky guy as well and he actually lifted the lid of my feeder and sat inside feasting. But the next morning, when I went out to refill, what a surprise I got! A sparrow had gotten itself trapped inside when I went to replace the top of the feeder and burst out to fly away and startle the hell out of me!
Loved the idea of the squirrel cafe. I have house sparrows visiting the 4 feeders I have put up in my front yard which were soon noticed by a squirrel too. The squirrel had easy access to all 4. And would devour the feeds faster than the sparrows would. I've now dedicated one of the feeders to the squirrel which is also shared by rose-ringed parakeets. This new feeder has sunflower seeds and the remaining three use foxtail millets meant for sparrows.
I really enjoyed your second squirrel video. I kept thinking of the hours of squirrel / bird feeder footage that must go into making it. The hard work paid off! You've got a beautiful production. I kept wondering what is next and liked the gentle cliff hanger of the nuts in the neighbor's yard. It was nice also to see you in the video too.
It turns out that I am 99% retired and sticking close to home, so there was time to do this. Capturing footage was almost a daily exercise. I did learn more at the end about using my Nikon D500 although most was shot on my Canon XF400. Glad that you enjoyed it. How about LIam?
I haven't come across your channel before, but today it was needed and enjoyed! With your narrative and Wimpy the squirrel's antics, I truly enjoyed your vlog! Keep up the good work and God Bless!
Hi, great video. I worked at the Bevatron from 1984 until it closed. I was in John Reddings maintenance crew. I feel honored to have worked there. I retired in 2007 from LBNL
Man against squirrel. 🐿 I’ve been building my own contractions recently, it took a while but I won. 💪🏼😂 So now I feed it bird nuts everyday coz I felt bad for it.
