My name is Jason Baum, and I've lived in Pittsburgh, PA for pretty much my whole life up until January of 2019 when I moved across the country to Prescott Valley, Arizona. I've completely fallen in love with the Southwest, and I love getting out and exploring as much as I can!
I started this channel as a way for me to document all of the cool places I'm fortunate enough to see, and as a way to keep in touch with my family back in PA. This channel features long form, unedited video footage of various races, trail runs and hikes throughout the beautiful state of Arizona and other exotic locations in the Southwest. So if you like adventuring and seeing new places, feel free to subscribe and explore with me!
Great job! Did you see Antelope changed the course? I’m going back for a redemption run 💪. No more 100 mile. Replaced with a changed 55 mile course that runs more west
@@jasonpontz5067 thanks! I did see the course changes, I also heard the 100 mile is going to be a rotating event so hopefully it will be back in 2026. The added slot canyons in the beginning of the new route are definitely intriguing, but I’m bummed they took out the off trail part around the rim of Horseshoe Bend- that was my favorite part of the course. Glad you’re going back for redemption! 👊🏻
Congrats on grinding it out and willing to share your experience. I had to laugh at the "I hate my life" update, it reminded me of the very animated and negative 4 mile conversation I had with myself when I bonked on my first 50K.
Ultra runners are hilarious. We question, doubt, ache, enjoy, have highs and lows, say no more, then finish, and sign up for another race soon there after. I finished Sedona Canyons a few weeks ago, said I was done for the year, and promptly signed up for Mogollon 100. 🤣🤣🤣 Love the videos!!!
Lol 😄. Your attitude was real for that moment, and it's okay to tell it like you feel. I at least totally understood you were not trying to be a jerk or be disrespectful. Great finish! 👏
Yeah, I was pretty miserable in the moment. Looking back, it came off as whiny. I think most runners who have done longer races have felt something similar 😂
Congratulations on your 4th 100 miler! And thanks for sharing! Are you considering going back for this one when the course is 'normal'? I really don't know what we missed in that southern section - I might go back some day.
Thanks! Never say never obviously, but right now I have no desire to go back for the normal course. That would be my 5th time running the first 50 miles 😳. Congrats again on your performance at this race, you crushed it!
😁 I love seeing your wife and child in the video! I heard her adding her thoughts to the beginning of the video 😄. She is going to steal the show 😄. Good luck with Moab, you totally got this!
I was super happy to see a new video 😁. That sunset was epic! Thanks for sharing. I'm saving your other video for my run tomorrow, it's going to be raining here in Washington, so I'm going to stay in and watch your new video while I run on the treadmill. Good luck at Moab!!! I'm running Bigfoot 200 this August. Looking forward to more of your videos!
Is the rock black from old volcanic activity? Looks pretty out there! Did you get the GoPro 12? I'm using the GoPro 10, and I'm hoping that the next GoPro (GoPro 13?) has an upgraded lens like the Insta360 Ace Pro that captures low light much better.
Yep, that’s what the black rock is! Super cool to run through. I actually ended up getting the GoPro11- seemed like essentially the same camera for $100 cheaper and I actually read the battery life was a little bit better with the 11. I’m happy with it, but it would be nice to have something to capture low light. The 11 still isn’t very good with that.
It’s a GoPro Hero 7. I got it when it that model first came out 4-5 years ago. It’s been a good camera, but I’ve been thinking about upgrading soon as my camera has been a little glitchy for my past few videos and all of my batteries keep dying faster and faster. I’ll probably go with whatever the newest model of GoPro is when I get a new one.
I live in Prescott. I just found your channel and am enjoying watching you run. I wish I could run as far as you, but enjoy running Thumb Butte. Keep up the training, you can do anything!
Thanks so much! I’ve been living in Flagstaff for the past year and a half or so, but am actually moving back to Prescott this summer so I’m pretty excited about that. No better place to be! Thumb Butte is a beautiful spot to run.
Of course you have fans😁 you make great running videos. You do a great job of keeping us informed of whats going on in the race, as well as how you are feeling, very engaging videos. You and Wes are the best at making these videos! Thanks for sharing. I would love to bump into you on a run, you should come to Washington and do Bigfoot 200😁. I have been watching your videos to help with my training, I'm attempting bigfoot 200 for the 4th time this year. Fingers crossed I cross the finish line 🙏, I have made it 131 miles twice, DNF at the same darn aide station both times.
Thanks so much! I enjoy documenting my runs and looking back on them from time to time, but for some reason it’s still surprising to me that other people actually watch them haha. I think this was the first time I got recognized in person, and it caught me off guard and I wasn’t sure how to react. It happens more often now and it’s still cool to me every time. Bigfoot is definitely on my list of races to do, but not this year! I’ll be running Moab 240 this fall though. Good luck at Bigfoot, you got this 💪🏻
What an awesome bib photo with your little girl, and a huge accomplishment to pull off with such a little one at home (you’ll sleep again someday! lol). Way up finish strong. Congrats!!
Thanks so much! The main reason I went to the race expo was to get that picture, haha. Had to deal with a few messy diapers on drive down and back, but definitely worth it!
First! ;-) Hehe! It was weird seeing snow at the start of this race. Really made it muddy but seemed like the course dried up and became very runnable. Great job out there! Beautiful course!
Haha, you’re everywhere on RU-vid! I appreciate you watching as always. The snow was definitely different to see this far south, but it made for a beautiful backdrop! (And that’s coming from someone who hates snow…). You should think about adding this race to your list, you would love it!
Belated congrats on the finish! Discovered Cocodona during the 2023 live stream. Great video, watched it all the way through. It's probably one of the best that highlights the course and experience.
Thanks! There’s so much that happens during an event like this so it can be tricky to know what to film without feeling like the video is becoming too long/redundant. It’s long, but so is the race… I appreciate you watching the whole thing!
I don’t think it’s in the cards for me this year :/. It’s gonna be so weird not running it, but I’m sure I’ll be volunteering and pacing throughout the week
I appreciate that! I still think my videos are garbage compared to Wes’ though, haha. His editing skills are top notch. I just try to show pretty things and to tell the story of the journey!
Thanks! I’m really interested in doing long term hikes, but I don’t know if it’s in the cards for me logistically right now. But through hiking/fast packing the AZT is most definitely on my bucket list!
Do you ever plot your routes and have them on your watch? As for the GoPro batteries, I've found that the enduro batteries last a lot longer, especially when it's colder outside.
No, I just use my phone for everything. I don’t even know how to upload maps onto my watch haha! I should probably learn how to do that. I’ll have to check out Enduro batteries! I have the official GoPro ones and some off brand ones, and neither of those last as long as I feel like they should.
What were the temps in the morning when you got started? The trail looked fun and offered something different than the 'usual' grand canyon trails. Thanks for sharing and letting me join you (virtually). #fomo Glad you made it back out OK.
Temps were about 30° at the start, so definitely a bit chilly (for me anyway). I didn’t feel like I started to warm up until mile 5 roughly. I hope you get to do a Canyon run someday, it’s an incredible place!
Thanks! I don’t feel like I was ever in danger of not making it, but it was definitely a struggle to make the climb out on such limited calories. I usually overpack on my Canyon runs, this time I definitely didn’t pack enough!
How many miles would you say are in loose sand? I just tried running in the sand at the beach. I felt like I was running an easy 9:00 minute mile pace and it turned out I was running 20 minutes a mile.
A lot of this course (I would say something like 2/3 of it) is on the main dirt road into the park. The other 1/3 or so goes into the backcountry. The backcountry miles are definitely the worst as far as the sand goes. So maybe 9 ish miles?
@@jbrunsaz4610 9 miles backcountry, so a lot of single track going up and down hills? Maybe half of the 9 actually loose sand? Or 9 miles of loose sand?
@@zom8863 from what I remember, most of the miles through the backcountry go through loose sand. Maybe not all 9 miles, but definitely more than half. There are a couple little climbs out there that are pretty sandy as well
You did Amazing, great work!. The sprint at the end was epic, i hope I have half as much energy at the end of my race. Bravo cutting so many hours off your last time!
🤣 I said the same thing about the bigfoot 200 race, and I've attempted it 3 times now. 2024 will hopefully be my 4th and final try, 🙏 I make it across the finish line.
Thanks! Definitely had to fight for this one, but sometimes those races end up being the most memorable. I still think this is a one and done for me though, haha
