For over 35 years, Soul Train reigned as the "hippest trip in America," kicking down barriers and irrevocably changing the face of television.
From its 1971 premiere, the show offered a window into black culture, introducing a nation to music and dance, which they had never seen. An arbiter of taste and style from the start-if you were hot enough for the public to want to see you, then you earned a ticket on the Soul Train.

He was going to be close to being the next "Godfather of Soul" since James Brown claimed that title first. He came close until his streaking stuff in his last years on live concert stages almost shot Gaye down in flames with his soul music career and permanently tarnished him. During the "Sexual Healing" tour before he was did in by gunshots, "Rockin' After Midnight" was my favorite of Marvin Gaye's hard-hitting Motown-Soul hits. It made me want to get down myself. I also see the evolution of Gaye's backup bands over the years. It started out as a simple progressive soul combo in the 1970s with a few synth players (almost like the size of Herbie's "Headhunters"), and then, in the early 1980s, brass players and sax players, and added percussionists in Gaye's last concert tour were the added musical forces. As his bands got bigger in personnel and size later on, it seemed like as if a jazz big band accompanied this soul singer-crooner. The use of synths, electric guitars and basses led to the feeling of "electrified funk and soul" along with the acoustic instruments in Gaye's orchestras.
