i forgot to mention in the last post, "Your Possible Pasts" originated from an even older song which Roger Waters had written for the "Saucerful Of Secrets" album back in 1968. The song was about Syd Barretts breakdown and named "Incarceration Of A Flower Child". The song was left off the album but ultimately recorded by Marianne Faithful.

The Shining is unquestionably great, granted-perhaps the greatest horror film ever made (at least for my money); so I’m truly not trying to take anything away from it. But…the greatest American film ever? For that to be true, it would have to get past Citizen Kane; and, frankly, it canNOT. Not even close.

Thanks bony; we all have our own opinions - and it's enough to me that you appreciate "The Shining" for being as valuable as you do. A large part of my reasoning lies in the literary melding within the book/film and preceding short story. I haven't ever seen a film do it so well and in such a wild and interesting fashion.

I first heard "Julia Dream" on the "Relics" vinyl album, and you can clearly hear sssyyydddd being whispered in the outro. For me, this was Roger's first paen to Syd (as was the use of "eiderdown"). Fun fact: On "Meddle" on the first line of "Pillow Of Winds" (there's that word again) you hear the word...........you've guessed it...... "eiderdown".

Regarding Poe's religious beliefs, I would say that he was an occultist because in his poem The Raven, his central character has been examining occult books in an attempt to contact the dead and then receives messages from the underworld in the form of tapping and the raven itself. He also draws heavily on Greek pagan mythology for his references / symbols. He does draw on some Christian elements, but utilizes them in accord with an occultic interpretation of them.

It's amazing how many elements Kubrick could tie into this movie. I watched a video a few weeks ago where the narrator went through showing how elements from Catcher in the Rye had been layered into The Shining. Also, another, showing how many cinematic influences there are, too.

He was truly hiding his story in plain sight; and those who don't want to look deeper can just think that it's about a haunted house.

@@talonkarrde9904 i think you've got it. nearly all of it. what can be known anyway. there are some small things that people who earnestly study it may discuss...but i think the large points you make are entirely correct and valid. kubrick made his own story by combining a number of things...and it's not meant to mirror the story exactly. most people miss that entirely. that's okay...they can still enjoy the film. however, just so you know. there have been 2-3 people so far that have messaged me as you have that actually have an understanding of the film and put in work. part of the reason this has slid for me is because so many people are life trolls. i don't know what else to call them. they say 'no it sucks give it up'...that's it. that's the rebuttal. even tho something has been made that is wonderful and can be seen they don't want to see it or contemplate it wholly. they don't. those people are very hard to deal with. those people...are jack.

And that is why, I think, Kubrick chose to put what he really wanted to reveal into a horror story. Because, confronting the repressed subconscious traumatic memories or the reality of the, let's call it the criminal element, operating within one's own country is more terrifying for most people than a crazed, axe-wielding maniac trying to kill them. So, when you come along and try to tell them that there's more to see here than they originally thought, some see this as an attack because you are attempting to breakdown that very protective barrier they've built up in their psyches to wall-off the horror. And, since you're now the bad guy, they feel perfectly justified in criticizing you for being an idiot or a looney who "believes such things". "You did this ... didn't you!"

don't worry jeanne - they had a box and blanket and they slept with their mom every day all the time. i let her outside when i took the video; she needed a break. it isn't easy for the mother dog and eventually the puppies wear her out. i also lost a lot of sleep making sure they were all fed and taken care of. it's a lot of work. just watching some clips of them walking around for a few minutes can't give you an accurate idea of their lives. just be sure - they were taken care of very well....much better than animals that are for example - raised for food. I was vegan for about 15 years for this reason. If the idea of animals suffering bothers you - you may wish to consider never eating meat again or any dairy products - or at least limiting those things...as those industries are often terribly abusive to animals...and i can assure you each one of the puppies i had loved every minute here in my house.

It’s extraordinary how we pull from experience and imagination to create. The more I hear about Mr. King’s work in retrospective the more people have found connections to other works of literature. Kubrick’s adaptation has a lot of his own experience with alcoholism. Unraveling a work can make it so much richer. The information you have here makes me think about that. Thanks for the video.

I support your idea that Rogers Waters knows that he can still shine. Esp. beacuse hs says "shine on" and not only "shine" which implicates to me that Syd Barrett did shine until then or till most recently and Waters knows that. There are two song passages that give me a very uneasy feeling: "Target for faraway kaughter" and " exposed in the light". Why should somebody laugh about him if he suffers from mental illness and/or drug addiction? I have the scary feeling something horrible happenend to Mr. Barrett (maybe during this infamous weekend after which he came back totally changed). Maybe LSD driven humiliating sexual encounters that were put on videotape or photographed and people in the business knew about it (think about the text passage "I saw the photograph" in A day in the life by the Beatles). Did you ever listen to the song "Videotape" by Radiohead? Gives me the same scary feeling. Maybe Mr. Barrett behaved in a strange way for several months after this until Pink Floyd did nor pick him up for a gig in January 1968. Maybe he wanted out of the business but he couldn´t because of contracts and maybe blackmailing by powerful people in or behind the business (=pigs). Talents like him are pure gold in this industry. What happened between January 1968 and April 1968 when he officially left Pink Floyd? They discussed this Brian Wilson model (= he just writing but not performing). Could it be that they secretly agreed to such a model with the slight difference that he did not receive the writing credits (because he wanted to "disappear completely" (another fitting Radiohead song) from the public eye and not be "exposed in the light"). Why should David Gilmour always make sure that Mr. Barrett did get his royalty cheques? Shouldn´t this work automatically as part of a regular administrative process? Or was it the royalties for his uncredited songs?

i don't know mr. robot. sadly. you make a lot of good points and i have to admit some of it makes me uneasy as well. syd in one of his solo songs states "there won't be anybody very hard" - while trying to convince someone to come along to a celebration of sorts (I never lied to you). if you read the lyrics to just that song it makes me also worried that there was something possibly sinister going on. there also is a story of syd being interviewed while he had locked himself inside of his room out of fear of .... some people. i want to thank you for the radiohead connections. a good band. sad perhaps that even modern musicians have been struggling with the exact same problems. it's hard to know any of these things for sure, but i do know in the USA at least - organized crime was heavily involved with early rock and roll and jazz. beyond that we can only guess. i'd hope that the UK wasn't quite as bad as that....but that may be hoping for too much.
@vincentvanbarrett7138
@vincentvanbarrett7138 6 месяцев назад
part of the reason this song bothers me, is i suspect syd had someone very special to him that may have been taken away....in a process very similar to what happened to john lennon. tho perhaps john lennon wanted to move on from his marriage and pursue yoko...i don't think syd wanted to move on. and there were DEFINITELY people in the industry pushing john lennon away from his first family.

@@vincentvanbarrett7138 Thank you for your reply! There is so much that I still have to explore, esp all the lyrics by Mr. Barrett. Until recently I only knew the official story about Syd Barrett (= too many drugs, then went crazy and disappeared) but this view has changed drastically since then. I found something interesting yesterday about a guy named Steve Peregrin Took who was a member of Tyrannosaurus Rex from 1967-1969. He died in 1980 but in 1995, a session from 1972 has been released with the title "Crazy diamond": ru-vid.com/show-UCRudvjWfIB3EcwfHTZ0ze6w On it there is a song called "Syd´s wine". His Wikipedia page states as follows: "Took moved into a basement flat beneath Secunda's Mayfair offices, which he set up as a live-in recording studio to demo material at his own ease. The flat rapidly became a magnet for the cream of musicians on the underground scene, who would contribute to the recordings while visiting Took. As well as old colleagues from Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies, Secunda reported that Took received visits from Syd Barrett, who at the time was living in Cambridge, but would shortly relocate back to London. From Secunda's account, it would appear likely that Barrett is on the recordings done in the flat by Took and his friends.[11] Highlights of the session tapes were eventually released by Cleopatra Records in 1995, as The Missing Link To Tyrannosaurus Rex. A new version of the 1971 acoustic Shagrat song "Beautiful Deceiver" is tracklisted on the CD as "Syd's Wine" and a credit for guitar and other noises is given to one Crazy Diamond, an allusion to the 1975 Pink Floyd track "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", written in tribute to Barrett. Stripped down versions of the track "Syd's Wine" reveal a second guitarist in the room and audible vocal noises." So here´s a confirmation of a direct involvement of Mr. Barrett as writer and performer.

This is interesting. Early on, both of those bands were rolled out even before they became good and were promoted like crazy. The connections with all of the bands back then is fascinating and connected to EMI and social engineering. I've wanted to do a dive into Syd and Paul from a sort of strange perspective- The Beatles in their records seem to have a preoccupation with a replacement Paul (dead?) and the band breaking up and having replacements. Pink Floyd, similarly, seems preoccupied with Syd losing his mind (he "blew his mind out" with drugs) and being replaced. Lonely Hearts Club Band... Wish You Were Here... It seems to be a similar theme. Soldiering on without the original person.

I have a theory that the maze stands for a fort, on one level, and when Ullman and the rest are touring around the maze and the hotel in single file, they are meant to represent marching soldiers. This is just a tiny little subliminal message to our brains. I got this theory after watching a video of The Shining played backwards and forwards at the same time, in one image. Jack is in the maze at the end, and Ullman's flag on the desk at the beginning is showing through on Jack's arm where a military patch would be on a soldier. Immediately, I thought "Army".

Syd is a huge cult figure and he worked for only a short period of time. Maybe he knew that because of his looks and charisma he would be an icon like Jim Morrison or Elvis Presley. He knew that he wasn't able to withstand that kind of life. He walked away on his own terms and lived the way he wanted to.

Never mentioned Robyn Hitchcock as musicians strongly influenced by Syd.
