I recently saw this film in the US. It's well worth seeing for any Barrett fan. A few things I liked were that many more Barrett contemporaries are interviewed including people like playwright Tom Stoppard. So, they did cast a much wider net than the previous documentary. They also used actors to portray Barrett at various life stages which I thought was thought provoking. One aspect I was disappointed in is that once again this film adheres to the theory that Barrett took too much LSD and damaged his brain. I believe this is not only inaccurate, not based on any scientific evidence, but also feels like victim blaming. Short shrift is given to the idea of a mental health disorder that went untreated. Not a very balanced view,, but overall I enjoyed it. Looking forward to your observations.

rockern; i suspect i'll feel the same way you do since you seem to have many of the concerns i did and do. I agree....i think Syd likely had a personality disorder (i hate the word disorder) for that. But his sister has stated he was on the spectrum. So that should clue people in a little bit at least.

hi robert; i think you're likely right that Syd wouldn't tolerate BS. He had a documented short temper at times...in my opinion...he was quiet and people would push him and he'd snap. That seems to be the dynamic. It's interesting you mention Nirvana. Cobain was quite similar. Cobain is one of the reasons i'm happy for Syd. He chose a path that let him live a full life. I suspect he wouldn't have made it if he stayed with the group. I think the stress and people in that orbit would have used him up and discarded him. Cobain also was aware of that...and was also an artist of sorts. his lyric "...she eyes me like a pisces when i am weak" speaks volumes.

i felt that way too raggae; til i realized he didn't want to be known. he just wanted to make things and share them from a distance. some people show their love in that way; it's a beautiful thing, IMO - to say - they want to share lovely and valuable things, and you can live your life; and they will live theirs. the passing moment is valuable and bittersweet in a way but we honestly don't have much time on this earth, and even less with people that we don't have daily contact with.

Syd is a huge cult figure and he worked for only a short period of time. Maybe he knew that because of his looks and charisma he would be an icon like Jim Morrison or Elvis Presley. He knew that he wasn't able to withstand that kind of life. He walked away on his own terms and lived the way he wanted to.

hi nick; i can't think of any. the closest we'll get may be syd's solo stuff that gilmour helped out with; both albums. tho again, hard to know exactly what gilmour may have personally added. there may be some shows they played together when gilmour first joined floyd; but only one would be singing and i'm not sure they could play guitar together; gilmours guitar style is very different to syd's.

I saw the movie but forgot the reference to the name FRED. Do you remember what the story was about that ?
@vincentvanbarrett7138
@vincentvanbarrett7138 10 месяцев назад
Syd liked to make nicknames. I think Fred may have been his nickname for David Gilmour or perhaps Beck. As Syd was vastly influenced by DIRECT INSTANCES of literature...he appears to have been giving nicknames the same way Kipling does in "Wee Willie Winkie". He makes other references tho obscure to Kipling as well, like the use of the Tyger as a symbol for death and destruction and terror.

The goal of any artist is supposed to be creation of original or unique material and Syd brought that in spades. Definitely a different animal, while the other Pop groups are writing songs about love and other normal things, this guy is writing about stealing woman's underwear from close lines. My guess is the official story is more then likely close to the truth. I think he probably pushed things too far and either had second thoughts about the pop lifestyle, or was incapable of that lifestyle (either way the exit happens). I doubt he actually contributed any material outside of the things he is credited as providing. His shadow is all over the "biggest" era for the Floyd however.

Too much hippie-dippy/conspiracy stuff here. Syd was their meal ticket. Until his break in late July 67, Roger Waters and Nick Mason were perfectly fine riding his creativity to fame and fortune. Even then, they hoped he might get into back together until the US tour. Syd, whether through his drug use or pre-existing mental conditions or a combination, he became mentally ill, period. And, as Joe Boyd said, HE WROTE POP SONGS, along with the other stuff. EMI wanted another Beatles. They were perfectly willing to give him/them the rein to do Interstellar Overdrive. He perfectly understood in May ‘67, that to do that, he needed to and enjoyed writing See Emily Play. What is Gigilo Aunt but a pop song? Of course people had their biases about the tragedy that ultimately occurred. That is the one thing this commentary gets right.

@@vincentvanbarrett7138 I have never studied much on the life of Peter Gabriel, except that if I had had a chance to date Roseanna Arquette, I certainly would have done so, even if my friends would think I was a nut. I might even proclaim that I could turn water into wine pulling that off. To the point, though, I just think there is far too much of a tendency among some to dismiss the tragedy of Syd’s life, to paint him as someone who rationally turned his back on stardom to lead a simple, happy life, and/or think of him as the victim of evil conspirators lurking here or there. In the process, they often want to paint a brilliant artist himself, RW, as evil, simply because of his drive and ego. Those things simply are not true, even if hindsight shows that Syd might have been saved if things had been done differently. I would encourage anyone to read David Gale’s superbly-written obit in the Guardian to get a true picture of all of this from a friend who was not subject to some of the same biases as others around Barrett.

@VncentVanBarrett Do you agree with my analysis that Syd Barrett had schizophrenia. I’ve heard it brought up a few times and my own brother has this disease. Because of what I’ve experienced with my brother; that guides my opinion on this. I don’t think this was ever officially ever acknowledged by anyone, not even his sister. I totally agree with your statement that we need religion in today’s world more than ever. Myself I’m Catholic. I love Syd’s 3 solo albums and his Floyd material; what a genius he was!! God bless Syd and all of Pink Floyd. Can’t wait to see the new Have you got it yet?
@vincentvanbarrett7138
@vincentvanbarrett7138 10 месяцев назад
hi sfender, thanks for the comment and question. to answer your question on schizophrenia; i'll only say that it's possible. I don't think it's knowable. Only he and maybe his sister would really know. Syd could be extremely private and compartmentalized. HIs sister has said on record that she believes he was 'selfish' and 'on the spectrum'. Just my opinion but those two qualities can EASILY be seen from the outside as schizophrenia. We haven't observed him; we aren't psychologists; we simply can't know. I do think MANY people have schizophrenic traits. Many people do. The question is how strong are those traits and are they consistent? etc. One of the questions i have is ... what did she mean by selfish? From context i think she meant 'private'. selfish meaning 'not sharing'. And a private person does not share their thoughts or feelings or worries, hopes, aspirations, creations, etc. I think that's what she meant. Hope this helps.

Bowie said he felt free to wear makeup due to Syd. They all get influenced by each other. An atypical schizophrenic. Some strange acid like what Peter Green and his roadie took and got altered further mentally. Some psychic stuff was nurtured by lsd. Thats a common happening. I love most everything about the Syd year of out front and center. You know he had diabetes right? He needed hospital and had some issues with speed the doctors wanted him to stop. He had anger issues. He could be quite rude at times. Overall a kind of undesirable personality compared to the charismatic boy he used to be. Its a shame. He made a lot of contribution in that year.
@vincentvanbarrett7138
@vincentvanbarrett7138 10 месяцев назад
Very much agree. Keeping to himself and hiding things from people. when someone is as creative as syd i suspect people were always asking him what he was doing and he'd say nothing....which can seem selfish. or perhaps; not being willing to go along with others when you know the way you want to live your life and walk your own path. @@cynthiamarston2208

thanks much for the comments ms. cynthia. i did know about the diabetes; and the anger issues. i'm not sure about the anger issues completely. i think perhaps he was disappointed by people changing things he was trying to do. if he was on the spectrum as his sister said...well, things not going to plan or behaving properly can be very aggravating to people like that. perhaps that was a contributor. and one of the most chaotic things a person will ever interact with is....other human beings :)@@cynthiamarston2208

Syd Barrett was not particularly fond of the music business. He didnt like doing the BBC and why do you think that is? Because its garbage. Because its a redundancy. Because it has little to do with having real talent or being creative. Instead the music business deals with dress code and image. Forcing musicians to be anything other than themselves. Being impatient and not allowing music to inspire the musician and instead demanding that the musicians force the music and then it becomes contrived. Oh yeah...I practice 10 hours a day so I can become a person ...a musician who wants to make up shit. And force music to be something that it isnt..
