I agree with you about the greatness of the music being down to the expanded lineup, although I stand by the influences I cited in the video. Their sound has originality - primarily through Stuart Staples’ utterly unique voice - but I can trace a lot of the musicality to various sources (namely the ones I mentioned). They mine their sources tremendously, but the roots and influences are very much there, although I admire their ability to shapeshift sonically (a point I revisit on more than occasion). I do concede though that not mentioning The Triffids as regards their sound (I only mentioned them in reference to you getting me into them, so they kind of were referenced 😉) was an oversight. Now you mention it, The Triffids thing is rather obvious - especially on a track such as ‘Jism’. I am pleased to learn that Staples has cited McComb as an influence and I would love to hear him singing during the tribute concert! With Morphine, it’s more a mood they conjure with their music that puts me in the same headspace as when I’m listening to Tindersticks. I feel there’s parallels between the two bands as regards what they’re striving for, and what their baselines are. There’s some musical similarity for me too, but it’s just a bit more subtle than some of the other names in the discussion. Lovely to learn you have seen Morphine live too! To conclude my response, I was so happy to read in your concluding thoughts to me that I touched upon some areas you agreed with - especially as regards where the album’s appeal lies (mystery, for example). I couldn’t agree more that it’s a masterpiece - an album I know I will continue to come back to through the years I have to come, just as I have come back to it over the years since it’s been in my life. It’s a staggering achievement, truly. I’m ALWAYS happy to discuss Crispin Glover, so let’s do this! 😆 He’s tied in my all-time top five fave actors, which also includes Spader, Oldman, Dourif, Rourke and Penn. Crispin is a true genius, a real one-off, and ‘River’s Edge’ boasts one of my all-time fave performances of his as the unforgettable (and yes, fascinating) Layne. It’s a wonderful film that I’m always quick to recommend to those not familiar with it, so I’m delighted to be in the company of someone who knows the film and is a fan of it too 😊 I would love for Lynch and Glover to team up again, as they did so wonderfully in ‘Wild at Heart’ ♥️ I actually wrote a song about Crispin’s character in ‘Wild at Heart’, Cousin Dell, many many moons ago before the hair went grey and a bit of weight was piled on, but hey I’ve just renewed my gym membership so that’s a work in progress again - at least it will be next month, when I’m eligible to start back! 😆 As for the grey hair, I embraced that long ago and have no issue with it at all. He has the potential to share Crispin’s podium, given the chosen career path, but I’m not sure he’s there just yet. For me, Crispin is my undisputed ‘Wizard of Odd’ 🧙 I admire Caleb’s eccentricities, but would currently bracket his ‘weirdness levels’ alongside the likes of Brad Dourif (a phenomenal actor) and Jeremy Davies (Crispin-esque in the affected mannerisms etc.). Yes, you’re spot on that The National were playing at the castle on the evening I returned home, so it sounds like our digging was a day apart. Suede were magnificent. I’ve watched both bands live many times - and the Manics are all my all-time-faves - but Brett and the gang were on fire and blew the Manics off the stage. Suede were on first and the Manics just couldn’t match their energy. They were having some real sound issues too, which didn’t help, but they soldiered on and did the best they could. At least you got it eventually, though 👍🏻👍🏻 I really appreciate the Rote Kapelle recommendation too, but felt defeated again when you said you no longer own it on vinyl. I wonder where it went? 🤔 I will have to give it a listen, as it sounds very much up my street. @@TheVinylSanctuary I haven't been to Edinburgh for about twenty years now...although somebody we only vaguely know has very very kindly offered us a week free in the empty townhouse they have in Edinburgh before it goes on the market, so likely that's a clincher. Layla's father is also Glaswegain and there's family around Edinburgh. Regarding Avallanche, you probably know it is owned by Andy, formerly singer of Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes, and also Rote Kappelle. Back in the day the original Avallanche shop was near in South Clark Street, near the Meadows if that means anything at all to you. Regarding lost and absent records, well, when I moved back down and went to art school ulitimately in Brighton I left a lot of records with my ex girlfriend Anna, I had a peripatetic life then and so did she, and I didn't quite manage to retrieve them what with one thing and another. They slipped and mingled with her own vinyl collect, then vinyl of her subsequent boyfriends, then, finally, they got mixed with her lovely husband Owen's record collection (he was the drummer with a pop combo that I, to this day, have never heard named Thee Stereo MC or something like that). I saw the records, or at least some of them, in their Brixton flat about a year back, many bought originally from Vinyl Villains and Avallanche, like old almost forgotten friends from childhood, half remembered whistfully...but it seemed too late to reunite with that viny, although Anna offered them back, as long as she could retained the Two Tone. But they seemed too at home, and Anna has had them for almost thirty-years now, which might be considered a lifetime by some. S.

There were mitating circumstances to me not reclaiming any of my long lost records, although there are some that are truely near impossible to repurchase at this late hour. Owen If had passed a few months before, it still isn't that long ago. It was an oddly joyous funeral dispite the tremedous and untimely loss...Layla and I got a life from the remaining band members. Owen was one of the nicest most down to earth people I have ever known, seriously...it only seems like the other day that it was their long in coming wedding in Brixton, our daughter was their youngest bridesmaid. That wedding where Jerry Dammers was DJ. So...I couldn't also take vinyl back...especially all the Billy Childish records Owen had become fond of, and honestly I probably wouldn't play these days. Sorry for the unhappy making end to that story. S.

That’s fair enough as regards ‘Silver Sun’, ‘The Only Ones’ and ‘BRMC’. You may feel that three from the 30 that didn’t make my Final Cut would be more worthy of inclusion, and I would totally respect that, but my choices came down to the finest of margins. All I can say is that I love all the albums in this top 30 that, in all honesty, often goes beyond a question of musical quality and more into a sense of feeling and personal connection. Yes, you mentioned the Martin Rev show on a previous vid and I’m over the moon you got to experience that! It must be an incredible memory for you already. I’m pleased we agree on ‘Violent Femmes’, which was my number four. That’s a fair shout on ‘David Bowie’, but it wouldn’t have made my final 30 if I owned it. That’s an excellent call on ‘Tracy Chapman’ 👏 I had it on vinyl and sold it a while back when I needed some money. I regret the sale, as it’s a very fine album. I’ll aim to get it back in the collection someday. You can cheat away, Jesse and get ZZ Top in there if it makes you smile. Being half-Scottish myself and my father hailing from the City, I enjoy reconnecting with my Glaswegian side through your chronicles. I really enjoyed the Irn Bru story, and how a vinyl trade was eventually achieved. @@TheVinylSanctuary Thank ye Christian...Chloe can be interesting, she went back to Japan for another year after that, and infact has stayed in East Asian for most of the last decade, living now in Thailand. Parted from her vinyl, which is still in London. Her lack of memory about records and events is quite shocking set against her three undergraduate degrees in three different subjects, her MA from the RCA, and her PhD in history. Although there are mitigating circumstances as to why the Scottish years are a bit blurry. In those days, in that time in Scotland, in Glasgow first then Edinburgh, I saw a band almost every week...but Chloe saw somebody play probably twice a week. I saw every band from the Batchelor Pad to Fugazi, from The Young Gods to Half Japanese, Melody Dog, My Bloody Valentine , Thee Headcoats, everything inbetween. There are more gigs I have forgotten than I remember...then there are the gigs I missed, regardless of having tickets, for whatever reason, The Fall in 1986 when the car broke down on the way, Jesus and Mary Chain supporting Primal Scream supporting in 1985 for the sake of the cost of a train ticket and £1.50 entry...the list is painfull. I believe there is a film of The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans, Dawson, and Badgewearer from around 1991, Glasgow (a gig where the bouncers on the door were truely awful and the bands appologised to the audience) part of the film, I understand was used for MTV or something, where Chloe and I are seen dancing at the front...but I have never seen it myself. I do enjoy a challenge and I have to say that these conversations with your friend Chloe sound very interesting and rather intense in the best way possible. It may be down to the time I am replying to you at, but can you give me an example of what you mean by the challenge you have set me, just so I am understanding clearly what it is I need to be bearing in mind to rise to this challenge as best I can? It’s the ‘where the second two albums arguably wouldn’t exist without the first’ bit I’m slightly unsure about 🤔 An example may help; then I can think about choosing three bands/artists based upon the example you provide. Okay, it is really just about making a chain of connection, overt of covert...for example, I could argue that Primal Scream's 'Sonic Flower Groove' wouldn't exist without "Fovever Changes' by Love. I could also argue that without Love, and Primal Scream, The Stone Roses debut wouldn't exist. It is very subjective of course. Somebody else could alternatively argue that the Byrds were the most important influence on early onset Primal Scream, that there's no direct connection between Love and The Stone Roses, that the Sea Urchins' single "Please Rain Fall' might be a more appropiate third record to have in the trio. It isn't about being right but about having a convincing theory and narrative. I hope that makes the challenge make more sense. I argued a theory with Chloe once that hippy died and punk was born at the 'Kent State Massacre' in May 1970 (as in Neil Young's 'Ohio')...present when Ohio National Guardsmen openned fire on Kent State University students protesting the exculation of the Vietnam War were future members of the band Devo as well as Chrissie Hynde, all close friends of those killed and wounded. By the way Chloe's answer to the Jesse Garon living and Elvis never being born was something like: a version of Elvis who is considered "colored" within the culture of that time making 'Race Records' which are massively popular with black and young white audiences alike across the US (and soon the world) would maybe: kickstart an independant and autonomous non-white mainstream music industry in the US, creating ecconomic growth for non-white communities, indepenndance and political power within non-white comminuties and progress the civil rights movement over a decade earlier than happened in our timeline. The first black and female US president is elected in 1980 easily defeating Ronald Reagan and her progressive reforms of the ecconomic and political system spread throughout the world. Hi Sean, I’m so sorry the original mini essay was lost 😔 It’s happened to me a fair few times and it can be rather frustrating; then the disappointment subsides and it’s just a case of writing it again - usually in an abridged version. I appreciate you taking the time to write again and share your thoughts with me 🙏 Your original essay does sound fascinating though, and I’m definitely checking out the Weddoes covering Gang of Four! I love ‘Foxheads Stalk this Land’ and you may be pleased to know it’s in my own vinyl collection. A great album - ‘Pop like that!’ I also own vinyl copies of ‘It’ll End in Tears’ and ‘Crocodiles’; however, as brilliant as your track seven picks are from these three albums, only ‘Villiers Terrace’ was in contention out of them, for me personally. ‘Villiers’ got round down to my last 50, so an excellent show, but didn’t make it to the final 30. It’s all very fine margins, and it’s a terrific song. I have ‘The Return Of’ on vinyl too but not ‘LC’, and I do agree the theory loses some weight there. I think it’s a very solid claim overall, and I approve of your decision to continue with this rigid study 👍🏻 Best wishes, Christian

I just listed some ablums where I felt the sixth track was argueably the strongest...and why I considered 'The Boy with the Thorn In His Side" the weakest Smiths single. One time I saw the Close Lobesters, in Bedford, there were only half a dozen other people in the audience and all of them had only turned up to see the support band Mega City Four. I was on nodding terms with the singer Andy Burnett a year of so later when I moved to Glasgow as he worked in the healthfood store near our first tennement flat, he told me that that Bedford gig was their worst gig ever...but how could it not be...I was half the audience. I also knew the printmaker in passing, who did the cover art screenprint for "Foxheads Stalk This Land"...she and I both used the Glasgow Print Studios, although me in a more cackhanded manner. At the time everyone seemed secretly to be somebody else...I remember the receptionist there, at Glasgow Print Studion, Louise was leaving to move to London, and I asked her what her plan was and she said she was going to sing fulltime...it was 1990 and she was Louise Rutkowski and she and sister were in the process of recording as a members of late onset This Mortal Coil. I had had no idea.The album they're on is Blood. The rule of seven doesn't work here either. I don't listen often but I have a terrible nostalgia for This Mortal Coil. I very much associate "Song to the Siren" with leaving home for the first time and living in crappy bedsits with fiddled gas meters and having nothing but records and old overcoats which once belonged to dead men. I think the connection is a common one. S.

The premium cover 'Felicity' was of course for Peely...and for the sake of completion let us not forget the Wedding Present's Girls At Our Best cover, which I wasn't so fussed about. The Wedding Present...funny...I thought they were rubbish with a rubbish name whence I first heard them, then by the third play I loved them to bits, very much around the lyrics, the guitars were incidental. They filled the space where The Smiths once were for many, and I guess I fell roughly into that catagory also. They were another band I was glad to have seen in the rush of their of youth (and in the rush of mine). Enjoy, S.

I would also be interested in you elaborating upon your point as regards ‘The Boy with the Thorn in His Side’, as I do really love that song and felt it was a fine choice of single. I loved reading the Close Lobsters story, and the revelation regarding Louise Rutkowski’s move to London! I love the idea you planted in my head that the people around you were moonlighting as someone else, or possessing alter egos - for example: ‘Clerk by day, twee pop legend in the making by night’… You are also putting forward a strong case for me to revisit my This Mortal Coil albums in the vinyl collection (just the first two LPs, but I do enjoy them a lot). Hiya, Michele 😊 I’m very pleased to read that you feel Mr Anderson was onto something with his own ‘Musical Matrix’ 😉 🎥 I’m over the moon that ‘Sleeping Pills’ is your favourite song from ‘Suede’. It’s my fave from ‘Suede’ too and my third fave Suede song overall. When I was a teenager, my bedroom was a loft with no door - meaning my music and guitar playing could be heard throughout the house when I wasn’t being polite enough to wear my headphones. Because I played ‘Suede’ a lot, my mum became a huge fan of the album and ‘Sleeping Pills’ became her fave song from it! She would hum it and sing it quite often. When I asked her why she loved it so much, she said the lyrics were funny. She loved the line in particular - as did I - ‘There’s sweet FA to do today’. She loved Brett’s voice too… what a legend my mum is! I’m chuffed you enjoyed my 30 picks in this vid too! I posted my Boy Harsher review for you yesterday afternoon, only to realise this morning it didn’t upload. I have tried a few times this morning re-uploading the review over on AISB, both with my other profile and this one, so I’ll keep everything crossed it works here on this channel. I just didn’t want you thinking I had flunked my assignment, as I need that extra credit! 😆 Thank goodness I had a draft of my assignment in my ‘Notes’ app, so I didn’t lose what I wanted to say 😰 ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ by Boy Harsher… ‘Intro’ - Slighty ambient, spacey and just a wee bit spooky. I like the ‘buzz’ sound on it… it was oddly soothing. ‘A Realness’ - Now we’re cooking! It would appear I’m picking ‘80s synthpop/new wave/post-punk revival stuff almost exclusively from your weekly lists, Michele. It’s only fair to state that I was aware of Boy Harsher’s sound to a slight degree, due to your inclusion of the excellent ‘Pain’ on the Midnight Moonlight playlist, but this could have been an altogether different-sounding band, as I believe this is their debut? It could have been a folk/funk mashup! I’m very pleased it’s sounding as it is, because this is what I’m totally vibing with in general, in this moment in time, when I’m choosing to listen to music for pleasure. That abrasive ending was inspired and I loved the cool, detached vocals. ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ - The vocals in this track are more androgynous and European-sounding. The simple but effective synth backing reminds me of DAF. This isn’t Sunday afternoon music with a flag-cracking sun to accompany me, but I’ll absorb it on this my first listen; gather my thoughts for you; then make plans to listen again when nighttime descends. I feel that would be the optimal time to experience this album, but I’m very much enjoying it so far. ‘Last Days’ - This song sounds cinematic to me. Throughout its runtime, with eyes closed, the opening scenes of ‘Lost Highway’ flitted across my brain before making way for Ryan Gosling’s Driver beating a hasty retreat; then Ryan O’Neal’s Driver appeared - uttering the words ‘Go Home’ just as the song ended. ‘Suitor’ - Eyes wide open now following ‘Last Days’, I hear the rumblings of a soundtrack to a horror film. ‘It’s a tricky situation, it suits you’… the vocal delivery sounds slightly sensual, alluring but simultaneously red alert-level dangerous. Just before the three-minute mark, when the song stops ever so fleetingly, then kicks back in with another DAF-like riff, the song is an absolute delight. The voice loses control, with its intense cry of ‘Don’t turn your back on me’. My fave track so far. ‘Morphine’ - I can’t see this word now and not think of one of your fave bands, Michele 😊 I’m happy the whispered vocal style has returned, as it sounds so soothing on the ear. A little bit of a New Order tinge to this one, and the line: ‘She’s like morphine on my mind’ definitely made an impression with its impassioned yet understated delivery. A very ‘cool’ song, with its icy core thawing ever so slightly upon the song’s climax. ‘Save Me’ - The most ‘commercial’-sounding song so far, perhaps? Has single potential, so I’m wondering if it was indeed released as such. I found this one really catchy and slightly lighter and brighter than the songs which have come before it. The vibe is still dark overall, but ‘Save Me’ injected just the smallest dose of dappled moonlight across the album. ‘Deep Well’ - I love the music, in particular, on this track. The synth programming is superb and I love the repetition of the central riff…. Positively hypnotic and very enjoyable. ‘Big Bad John’ - Wow, that intro! This sounds like it’ll be a synth epic before it even gets started; then I hear this sneery laugh and the voice makes its entrance. I’m intrigued who this John person is, and that ‘no one’s afraid now’. Again, this song could easily be on the soundtrack to a film (most likely a psychological thriller) chronicling the life and times of this titular character. ‘With the switch of a blade’ was delivered with such hissing menace. A very powerful song. ‘CryFest’ - The eyes are closed again now, as the sun shines so brightly. This is a rather creepy song on what has been an unsettling, atmospheric album. It’s strange that amongst its cinematic qualities, a song such as ‘CryFest’ has ambient notes to it too, which are actually quite beautiful. I find some of the whirring, jarring, grating, mechanical scrapes that pop up in this album quite comforting, but the overall mood and feel is hugely effective. I found this to be an incredibly intriguing listen. There was immediacy to it, but I’m going to spend more time with it. The album appeared to come and go rather quickly, as I found myself engrossed in its sounds and textures. Once again I’m delighted with my choice for this assignment, and I hope my initial thoughts on ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ paves the way for us to discuss it in more detail. They released 2 albums in 2019 and a soundtrack in 2022 I may love even more than this debut. “Pain” was my introduction to Jae & Gus and it was quite the revelation for me. ‘Yr Body Is Nothing’ is filled with a seedy & dangerous unease and I enjoyed reading your review. My fave tracks are “Suitor”, the title track, “A Realness”, “Morphine”, and “Big Bad John” “Suitor” brings to mind Yello’s “Oh Yeah” I think that’s part of the reason why I love it so much. @@TheVinylSanctuary it isn't an album...just an EP, sadly I feel, which is why I missed it for so many years...a minor release on Cherry Red in 1982 when I was still wearing black and mainly listerning to Bauhaus and Joy Division. And of course, Cherry Red was an oft maligned record label. John Peel too had his dislikes as I'm sure you're aware, being into Lawrence. I saw John Peel live once, in that I attended one of his roadshows circa 1991 in Glasgow...I went up requested the A Witness song 'I Love You Mr Disposable Razors' from Mr Peel and danced around like a fool whilst Stephen Pastel and Aggi moped in the corner. It was best to request I song you knew he'd be keen to play. Anyway, I have taken you off the Elvis topic somewhat. Appologies. S.

I have enjoyed so many bands/artists who have graced their label over the years. Yes, I’m aware Peel didn’t like Felt because he intensely disliked the album title ‘Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty’. Lawrence wrote him a letter about it and I believe he asked for some tapes back. Lawrence has been on record a few times stating that Peel’s disregard of Felt damaged their impact a fair bit. I know Peel rated ‘Primitive Painters’ but that was probably more down to the presence of his beloved Cocteau Twins… Thank you again for sharing another of your stories - always enjoyable to read - and no apology necessary. I enjoy conversations that go off on tangents and cover subjects I find to be interesting. I will check that song out by A Witness later this evening, when work is done and dusted for the day. For me Elvis Costello was always too shinny, too commercial, too produced...

@@Layla-kd4ui Thanks for the Nikki Sudden tip.. he does look like a Bad Seed! A “commercial” sound isn’t necessarily a turn off for me. Just depends if I vibe with what the artist or band has to say.. or not.

@@michelewiese48 yes Nikki Sudden shared certain recreational pastimes with Nick Cave and a taste in casual dress...I think the music of both personages can be difficult and tend towards the same kind of over-self-indulgence. I'd recommend 'Bible Belt' and 'Texas' as entry level albums if you're at all curious.
