Theres this point and click puzzle game called botanicula, which is made by the same people behind chuchel and happy game. I used to play this alot when I was younger. It got like pegi 3 and was usually very chill and cute game but to this day I remember the level which I believe was either last or second last, where you fell into a hole and everythink was dark and eary. There were strange creatures that were either blocking you from entering certain parts or trying to get you when you enter different areas of the level. Everythink audio related really freaked me the f out: the music, the ambience, the sounds of the creatures. It was pretty hard segment too and i remember always begging my uncle to complete it cuz i was shitting my pants😂 Great game tho

TL:DR; Please cover the Final Boss and the Ultimate Final Boss from Kirby: Star Allies. This game has to be the absolute DARKEST Kirby game I've ever witnessed come from a family-friendly company such as Nintendo. If you think Marx is horrifying, then you'll never truly be prepared for the final boss in Kirby Star Allies, and it's called Void Termina. As is standard with many Kirby final boss fights, it has several phases. In the first phase, you'll battle this giant monster who has eyes all over his body that you must attack to cause damage, and strange runic markings around its waist. Once the first phase is through, the monster's mask will fall off, and it is revealed it has no face, but rather, in its place, a void that sucks Kirby in. During the second phase, you'll wind up inside the monster. Here, you must attack the slimy, pulsating heart that resides within. The background during this phase looks like an absolute nightmare as well, it's largely a bunch of, what looks like to me, sinews and connective tissue, and it's definitely not great for people who are trypophobic either. Phase three is similar to the first, except the monster's arms are swapped with wings and its legs into a tail. It's honestly nowhere near as terrifying as the heart phase in my opinion. Phase 4 takes the nightmare fuel back up a few notches, though. Here, you'll fight a pink Zero looking entity with eyes like that of Kirby, except it can change the shape of its eyes, and a mouth that can stretch out super thin or open up super wide. I'd personally recommend looking into this one. It definitely deserves to be on the "Scariest Things from Family Friendly Games" iceberg list.

Wait the Dangonronpa ending is so sad, not just because Hina is basically reduced to a repopulation machine. She not only felt the need to have children with MULTIPLE guys, but she also had to give birth and figure out motherhood. She had to deal with pregnancy, health problems, and probably only having Monokuma as a doctor...the ages of the children are also sad. Byakuya's is the oldest, he might have forced her or manipulated her. Makoto's is the second oldest, he probably also felt responsible for trying to save the world and they agreed to have a child. The youngest is the son of her real love, Hiro, and she had to deal with the pregnancies of two other people before she could actually have a child with the man she wanted? And possibly, Byakuya's child is from Togo, not Hina, which makes sense but that means he was adopted by Hina after his real mom died...such a horrible implication, I feel like fans of the series are used to "dark themes", but this is given so little screen time and attention that most people probably missed it!

While the bad endings in Splatoon 2 is slightly disturbing, I'd argue it is NOT the scariest moments from the game. That reward goes towards the cutscene that plays out in the Deepsea Metro Station, prior to Agent 8's escape. After you have collected all of the "Thangs", the telephone in the center will begin to ring. If you answer it, the telephone will ask if you are ready to ascend to the "Promised Land". If you say yes, the cutscene will trigger, in which the "Thangs" are assembled into a giant blender, accompanied with audio of what I can only describe as horrified screaming and the cries of "DON'T GO IN!" all while what I can only describe as carnival music plays. Even worse is knowing that Eight nearly winds up meeting the same fate her predecessors did, liquified into a sort of sludge. It's absolutely traumatizing for a small kid to play through, and to say that I, as an adult was disturbed during my first playthrough is a severe understatement. I'd love to see you go more in-depth with Octo Expansion. The whole thing is pretty much a disturbing mess, especially for a Nintendo game.

The Endless Ocean Series was so great (AND NO I DO NOT THINK ENDLESS OCEAN LUMINOUS COUNTS AS AN ACTUAL PART OF THE SERIES). The Abyss was always the most terrifying section. The music that initially plays in The Abyss is titled "Benedictus", but if you spend enough time there, it will eventually cut out and eerie music will begin to play instead. It typically starts out quiet but then it just gets LOUD all of a sudden, with jarring instrumentation that seems to clash together, before going quiet all over again. Couple this with the area's depth and intense darkness, and it generates a legitimate terror of the unseen. The FOV is also "abysmally" (HAHA) low, so you wind up getting spooked by the horrendous creatures that live down there because they'll suddenly just pop out in front of you from nowhere. Ironically this game both garnered my interest in Marine Biology and also gave me Thalassophobia.

Would it be cringe to mention Ace Attorney? Dual Destinies is the only M-rated game in the franchise and for good reasons. If you fail at a certain point, you can get a bad ending where your rival prosecutor Simon's death sentence is carried out for a really dark murder he did not commit, his sister loses her mind and kills a bunch of hostages including Phoenix Wright's daughter, Phoenix and Athena quit law out of trauma, and Apollo basically becomes evil in his grief. There's a LOT of really dark shit in this game and I highly recommend looking into it.

If I remember correctly, Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel also had a pretty dark ending. It's been a while (correct me if I mess anything up), but something like one group of humans hates the Reyvateils (singing musicians) and forces one of your party members to sing a song that will wipe out all Reyvateils while you fight a boss. If you don't finish the boss before the plan finishes, the game will still continue. But the Reyvateils in your party will become weaker and weaker, until they finally die. And then the game ends, with all Reyvateils dead and the MC standing over the graves of the two girls who were in your party. I accidentally triggered this ending since I didn't realize they meant it when they said you needed to beat the boss before the machine starts up, and since there was no immediate game over. Was slightly traumatized as my party members died shortly after.

In case you're planning on making another "scary things in family friendly games" video, I'd like to suggest covering the Wilikin village from Skylanders Giants. It's a level that starts as a fake wooden ghost town with lifeless puppets, but flipping a switch suddenly causes the town to become real and all the puppets come to life, and you can flip the switch again to turn the level back into a ghost town. The puppets are very friendly to the player, but their voices are very hollow and lifeless and they make unnerving clockwork noises when they talk. Some of them have very ominous dialogue, talking about how their "maker" doesn't play with them anymore and stuff like that. I always felt some weird sense of dread when I played it as a kid but I was also super young so it may not be that scary to most people 😂

There is a flash game series i used to (and still do on flashpoint sometimes) play a lot named Monkey go Happy. This is about the 3 (or at least i think there is 3 could be more) halloween games called, Halloween, Talisman, and Bats. Halloween would not be so creepy if it weren't for the music in it, the song that plays during the gameplay is so creepy, feels like more of a song you would hear in a RPG maker horror game. Talisman also had that song and was overall kinda creepy on it's own with the npc designs (tho there is a funny glitch with a ghost that demands coins were you just need one and that's good enough) and bats while not having that song (using the default carnival like song that is also used for the win screen in the games) had a few levels were you play as a bat and need to get keys to leave, with the catch being each time you got a key, the buttons you used to control the bat get flipped and you had to adapt to it, if you touch a saw in those levels the bat would turn into a pool of blood (no other games in the series has blood to my knowledge). Bats is a odd game in the series to be sure and those levels don't help at all. (there is also Adventure's giant spider and The Castle's overall maze like vibe, but those are kinda small compare to the music in Halloween and Talisman and the blood in Bats). I don't know if i would be seen but thx for listening me to my ramblings.

yay another excuse to mention Live A Live's bad endings on yet another video about bad endings! please play Live A Live i want more people to talk about this game with also spoilers ahead, game's like 30 years old at this point but it wasn't officially released in english until 2022 and I strongly recommend playing it. So after you beat the initial 7 stories (prehistory, imperial china, edo japan, wild west, present day, near future, and distant future), you unlock the medieval ages chapter, which is actually the origin story for the main villain of the game, Odio. Long story short, it turns out Odio was once a knight named Oersted who, after several tragedies, decides to terrorize the other heroes of the game in his various incarnations (ODO, Ode Iou, O. Dio, etc). After the ending of the medieval chapter, you get to choose who you want to play as for the final chapter, the dominion of hate. You can choose any of the protagonists... including Oersted. If you choose Oersted, the final chapter plays out very differently (and is a lot shorter), as he takes control of the previous final bosses of each of the chapters to take out the heroes. This is A) really cool and B) implies that Odio's been going easy on you the whole time. If you kill all the protagonists, Oersted is left to wander in the now empty land of Lucrece, all alone. It's a bleak ending that's quite poignant. But if you (somehow) have a hard time taking down the other protagonists, you get an option in the place where fleeing would usually be- ARMAGEDDON. It does exactly as you'd expect- Odio obliterates all of space and time in a giant explosion. This ending is also really dark what with all of time being wiped out. There's some other bad endings you can get if you choose to play the domain of hate normally, but this comment is long enough and I don't feel like going through them. Also in case Gambado sees this- while I'm not sure how posting footage of the 2022 remake of Live A Live is on RU-vid now, Squeenix got copystrike happy with it when it initially released. Just a word of warning. I think it's not as bad now, though.

Awesome video as usual! I think the endings you can get in the paper mario games qualify, although honestly they are more funny than dark. Like in Super Paper Mario, you can just refuse to be the hero when talking to Merlon, and if you keep refusing he’s just like “well. We’re doomed.” Or in the Thousand Year Door when you read the ghost’s diary and she kills you instantly, or when you join the shadow queen, etc etc. One ending that recently affected me was Shovel Knight: King of Cards. It’s actually the only ending you can really get, but I would consider it “bad” anyways since it shows King Knight being an absolute asshole despite all the friends he made along his journey. The whole game is a prequel to the OG Shovel Knight, so you already know King Knight is an ass, but King of Cards lulls you into a false sense that maybe he’ll change his ways, only to betray everyone at the end as was always intended. Like everyone had so much faith in him but he was still rotten at his core.

I'll avoid naming horror games, as it seems like a easy scape goat. But a game I heard about from another video that has a really warped, dark ending that ISN'T a horror game is a game called Wandersong, where, if you SPEEDRUN through the game and avoid doing the actual objective of the game (I believe it was connecting the game's world through singing)...the game just ends in nothing. Just quietness and lacking of color. Why SHOULD you get the happy ending? You didn't work for it. You didn't CHANGE anything. ...but, fine, if you want a warped horror ending: Dreaming Mary. (I want people to learn about this game, man!) It is just implied, but heavily, but it is still disturbing and horrible. Triggers for SA and CSA.

Adding onto the danganronpa section, Ultra Despair Girls (yes I played that game and enjoyed THE CHARACTERS) in chapter 5, there’s a reoccurring question where you have to choose between destroying the controller that controls all the monokumas or keeping it in tact. If you destroy the controller at any point, “fireworks” go off to celebrate the adults winning the war against the kids. Turns out, these were not fireworks, as the kids are controlled by the same monokuma controller. Basically you killed a whole city worth of children lol

Not overly dark or traumatizing, but there is a "Bad End," in Legend of Zelda Minish Cap. No one really talks about it, which is understandable as its one dialogue box then it goes to the Game Over screen. At the end of the game, as youre heading to fight the final boss, you get a warning from the villain that after 3 chimes of the bell, Zelda will be drained of the Light Force and be nothing but cold, dead, stone. The bell chimes twice by the time you get to the room before him, and you then have to face three darknuts. If you fail to take them out within ~ three minutes the screen cuts, and the bell chimes, with your companion, Ezlo, stating that you were too late, and Vaati has won. Its kinda easy to get if you're not particularly good at fighting Darknuts, but it's also pretty obscure from what I've seen. I think the "dark," aspect i relate it to in my head is just the fact that yeah, Zelda pretty much game overed, and Vaati now has the light force and has the unrivaled power of a god, meaning nothing would be able to take him down I REALIZE THIS IS SUCH A LONG COMMENT AND I DO APOLOGIZE im just genuinely really passionate about Minish Cap and find this interesting and want to spread the awareness of the "Oh that's cool a bad end :))"

Before they changed it for him to always be there, Algalon in Ulduar in World of Warcraft would only wait around for about an hour before leaving. The lore of his fight is basically that he's an agent of the creator Gods. You send out a code that summons him to Ulduar. He performs a quick scan, and his scan shows that almost all life on Azeroth is corrupted, and needs to be purged. You have an hour to fight him to prove that the mortal races have the right to fight for their own survival. If you succeed, he gives you a reply code to cancel the destruction of the planet. If you fail to defeat him, he just despawns. Lore wise, he's teleported to another facility on Azeroth to begin a "Reorigination Process", which will purge every living being on the planet so that the Gods can have another go at creating a perfect world. Being an MMO that pretty obviously can't literally wipe the entire planet if one group fails a really hard fight, it's not a "True" ending though. There are a few fights where failing implies a bad ending. Deathwing tears Azeroth apart, the Lich King raises you as his greatest champion and conquers the world, Archimonde destroys Azeroth and Draenor, Sargeras uses Argus as a weapon, etc.

I disagree with the bad ending of CotL being the best outcome for Lamby, yes their entire kind was wiped out and they were forced to run a cult against their will, but now they've overthrown the god they created the cult for in the first place, becoming their own god and ruling it over in their own way. Sure, there's a new entity that deems them an "infant god" and the crown itself appears to be the true mastermind, but even with that, things have honestly gotten better with the bishops being brought back together as a family again if you choose to do that, those cat twins being brought back to their mom, and as of a new update coming out, the lamb now has a goat companion so they're not truly alone. I think Lamby's in a better place than ever now in the game, until something comes to age this comment terribly.
