Hello! My name is Autumn Romano. I am a former elementary teacher and am now homeschooling my own children. My family loves to travel and I enjoy documenting as much of our days as I can. Thank you for joining!
I’m in Missouri and starting at age 7 we have to track 1000 hours of school. I think 600 hours for core subjects and 400 for others. We have from July 1st to June 30th to complete the hours. But we don’t have to show or prove to anyone our hours. But it’s good to have a good log in case there’s any legal issues and you’re taken to court.
Yes! That makes sense. Definitely seems good to have a log, just in case. I didn't know that it's age 7 in Missouri. It's 6 in PA. Thanks for sharing!!
I talked more about it in my end of year review video, but we took a break from these books due to initial frustration with the phonics practice ahead of the stories that led to an unfortunate plummet in my daughter's confidence. After using a research-based reading program and building her confidence, I reintroduced these books and she loves them. We don't do the phonics practice in the beginning of the books anymore (my daughter's personal preference), but just use the books to practice reading after I have explicitly taught the phonics skills through the reading curriculum we use. She did not like the activities that went along with the books so we don't do those either. I think the books are great and I would still recommend them alongside a research-based reading curriculum. She recently finished set one and has started reading through the poetry book.
I am also in pa and former teacher. Did you homeschool your daughter in kindergarten too? I know pa doesn't require kindergarten. My daughter will be kindergarten this fall
Hi! 👋🏾 So nice to meet another PA teacher who is homeschooling. I homeschooled her for kindergarten, but she just turned 6 this past weekend so this upcoming school year will be my first year having to contact the district that I'm in.
I also ordered the butterflies and their caterpillars unit study to go with my letter C is for caterpillar letter of the week preschool I am doing. Where did you order caterpillars from? That sounds so exciting!
Fun! My girls are really enjoying it, so far. I ordered our caterpillars through Insect Lore! The link below should give you $2 off of your order. rwrd.io/v1yb0iy?s
We homeschool in Florida - regulation is not too bad! No mandatory subjects, curriculum is up to you - only a yearly assessment of progress and you choose who does the assessment. We love it! Just discovered your channel :)
You can add the curriculum to your dashboard (creating an account is free) with the Great Minds site. greatminds.org/resources/products/eureka-basic-curriculum-files You can also use embarc.online to download what you need, but the ads on the site can get in the way and make things a little more complicated. I hope that helps!
I wish you could buy just the adapters to move to main seat down and then use the infant options. I think by the time my baby is ready for the regular seat (instead of bassinet or car seat) my toddler will be too big for stroller at all.
I don't know why they don't make it easier to find, but I haven't had success on their website either. I type the name of the country followed by "flag coloring" into Google and then look for the Crayola page. Sometimes I'll use the Super Coloring website page if that comes up in my search. Some of their pages have a picture of the flag on the bottom.
I’m curious how you teach your daughters to hold a pencil correctly for handwriting? (As opposed to a fist like when they are starting out). I’m struggling with that for my 2.5yr old and not sure how to do it! Any advice?
I let my daughter grip with her fist for a while. I also let her use playdough (shaping letters and other things) as well as manipulatives and tools (tweezers, droppers, etc) to strengthen her fine motor skills before she used a pencil. When she was ready though I used these (amzn.to/3VivOTS) pencil grips on these pencils (amzn.to/3USlQah) to help her use the tripod grasp. Eventually she no longer needed the grip support and we also moved to regular sized pencils. I hope that helps!!
Your videos have been my absolute favorite lately. We will be utilizing a lot of the same curriculum you used for your daughter’s kindergarten curriculum. Currently researching more about Eureka, but it is a little overwhelming. We also purchased Pinwheels based off your recommendation and all of the material was also overwhelming at first, but we are just rolling with it and so far so good! I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you and the time you take to make these videos :)
That really means so much! I love that Eureka is free, but I can understand it being overwhelming, for sure. The embarc.online website helps me a ton, but it also helps that I already used the curriculum when I taught in the classroom so I'm familiar with it. Pinwheels is definitely A LOT of setup. I was hesitant to use it, but am soooo glad that it has worked so well for us. I hope that the curriculum works well for you, but if not, I hope that you find something that fits great with your family!! ❤️
@@AutumnRomano I love that Pinwheels is all encompassing! I was torn between Pinwheels, Logic of English, and All About Reading. What I decided is to just buy the Logic of English game book to use in combination with Pinwheels to add a little more fun. Do you have any plans/ ideas for what you will transition to after your daughter completes Year Two of Pinwheels? My uncertainty about what we would use following was the only reason I was hesitant about choosing Pinwheels. All About Reading felt like the safer option, but after much research and emailing with the ladies at RIL it was evident that Pinwheels creates a stronger foundation. It’s crazy to me that Pinwheels is such a hidden gem on this platform!
@@kristensantos11 I may continue with RIL and do Wand. I've looked through it and it seems like the right fit. I haven't fully decided yet though. And, yes, it definitely is a hidden gem. I think that the initial setup can scare people off though. I completely understand wanting to get something that is printed nicely and ready to go!
Hi! That's great! I'm still organizing our summer plans over here. I feel like I want to do so much, but Elani is in multiple camps this summer so I'm trying to be realistic. So hard!
@@AutumnRomano Ya, I get that. Usually there is one subject they need the most work in. We will mostly be working on that Reading) with math thrown in a bit throughout.
I'll definitely talk more about it in a future video! Elani will be in a lot of different camps this summer so it'll be very light math and phonics to keep everything fresh. I'll be more focused on working with Emi since she and I will have a lot more one-on-one time. Our local library does a summer reading program that starts mid-June so we'll log reading through that.
New Zealander here. We send a homeschool exemption to the ministry of education, and then there are basically no regulations at all. We arent required to do a certain number of hours, subjects, turn in work etc, my kids don't have to do yearly tests - they just leave you to teach what you want, how you want. In the exemption you explain how you plan to teach things as well as they would in school. ( or words to that effect) but noone checks up on it, nor do they expect you to stick to those initial plans. Oh and we get a homeschool allowance twice a year.
I watched this when you first posted! Just came back again to make a list of things I want to add, thank you for sharing 📝 Your page is one of my favorites due to the way you’re able to condense a lot of information into short videos for us busy moms, that being said this slightly longer one was equally enjoyable!! I love your hauls 👏🏽
How cute!! I LOVE your art cart. We have a small space too so I love seeing these “cart” videos. My youngest is 2 so she would still get into everything. I have those zipper pouches too, they’re great!
Yeah. I've seen that of NY so you get it! Thank you for the request. Yes! I love planning and I have a ton to do so I will definitely share how I plan.
Got to beta test the ABC mouse “Homeschool +” which was great. They take the core material from ABC and Adventure Academy, and add in printable lessons and Spanish and things. We will do it again over summer to help keep us on track
First time watching. I made it to the end of the video. You showed some things that I didn’t think about. I really like the magnetic whiteboard with the easel.
