Thanks for another great video. I left the Fuji ecosphere recently but this is the one lens that might tempt me back. The range is about my favourite for urban landscape and architecture (despite your reservations). I wonder if the 100mpx sensor reveals flaws that the 50mpx sensor wouldn't?

I'm so impressed with Viltrox lately, their 16mm f/1.8 is really quite the achievement, then their 20mm f/2.8 is so tiny and has become my favourite lens, the 24mm f/1.8 is pretty damn good for the price considering the Sony GM has reliability issues and focus breathing. Now this little gem, I've preordered :)

You can't adjust the aperture, you can't take pictures of landscapes, you can't take portraits. In strong sunlight, it may even exceed 8,000 shutter speeds. I won't use it even if it's cheap. The f1.8 aperture of the main lens of a flagship phone is about equivalent to a full-frame f10 and can be obtained. For a faster shutter speed, I would choose to use a mobile phone and bring a lens with a large aperture
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 5 дней назад
This is all very true, but same applies to an iPhone 15Pro, Ace Pro, Pocket 3, etc, etc which are equivalent of around f/5.6 for pocket3 and f/6.3 for everything else. This one is f/4.5, so way better and you have the excellent full frame Sony sensor to compensate for poor light. You're looking at around f/3 APS-C performance in such a tiny package - coupled with an A7CII, it's the Fuji X100VI killer basically.

I bought this used in like new condition from MPB.I use it on my X-S20. I'm impressed by the sharpness and weight. I like that it is a 45mm lens on a full frame as it gives me a bit more room than a 50mm. It is one of those lenses that grows on you and love it, May only concern was that the aperture ring was rather loose.\.

Looking in a bit, it's actually kinda shocking how few 28mm lenses there are for Sony FE. Lots of 24mm options--budget models from ultra-budget to dark-but-premium build to pro lenses. But for 28 there's Sony's old 28/2, a 28/1.4 from Sigma which is an old rehoused SLR lens, and actually two from Viltrox (this and a 28/1.8). The compactness and low price make this seem pretty fun, but the fact that it can't stop down at all feels like an awkward downside.

My XF80 gets a macro workout daily (literally used daily, unless I'm so sick I can't get out of bed - which hasn't happened yet). It's done yeoman's work as an 80mm prime as well. I've got it mated to an X-T4 and this lens simply never, ever lets me down. The only two lenses that see any significant amount of time for me are the XF16 and the XF33.

Solid vid, as always, Damian. This lens has become my favorite travel and general walk around lens. Very light, no dust suck, excellent IQ. For low light or strong out of focus backgrounds, I use primes anyway, so the half stop loss at the tele end (compared to the 18-55) does not worry me. Plus the 16mm at the wide end is a godsend.

I got this lens with my x-t5 after upgrading from an x-t3 with the 18-55. I like it, it’s small and light, and as someone who likes taking nature shots in wet/cold weather it suits my needs. I find the images are pleasant and easy to edit in dxo photolab. I use this along with the 70-300 and I think the value for money with this setup is decent. I am looking at getting a small prime for days when I fancy going to take more street oriented or for indoor/family photos in the future. I’m undecided on one of the f2 lenses or the 27mm f2.8 though. Any advice on a prime?

Will I buy... Not as a stand alone lens, maybe when i buy a new body and if i get a good deal on a kit i'd pick it up. I like the internal zoom for video on a gimbal but would prefer a fixed aperture across the range (F/4, keep it light and small) I'm waiting to see if the new 16-55 has internal zoom. I'd get the 18-120... but I need wider those extra 2mm do make a difference

@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 15 дней назад
Like most kit lenses... probably worth it in a kit, but maybe not stand-alone. From a landscape perspective, seems nearly perfect--for that use case OIS and f/2.8 aren't as useful as WR. Sharper than the than the other standard zooms, except the 16-55/2.8 and this is a lot lighter than that. For someone shooting events, or street without a prime, maybe video, I can see what folks would prefer about the older models.
@brownbear100
@brownbear100 15 дней назад
But for landscape a) both wider and longer are more interesting, b) even if 16-50 floats your boat you want corner to corner sharpness with as little correction needed as possible to achieve that. The 8-16 is too big and too dedicated for me, but so long as you avoid the extremes the 10-24 and third party options are decent enough. Why I prefer primes for landscape - even if convention dictates zooms are better. 14, 23mm, 50-140 is a kit light enough for alpine hiking. This lens for me as all about convenience in a take anywhere package. A bit like the 30mm f2.8, very versatile and easy to live with but don't expect it to blow your socks off.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 14 дней назад
@@brownbear100 While I think that does sound like a good kit, it’s also significantly pricier. If someone was new to the X-Mount system, was looking at landscape rather than event, this is the standard zoom to go for, rather than the Sigma or Tamron, or the older Fuji standard zooms. Skipping standard zooms altogether is a discussion that may be worthwhile. I’ve had some fun hikes taking good pictures with just a short telephoto and a wide prime.

As I have refused to "progress" beyond my S10, which would very, very definitely have been a S20, released after my S10 purchase- not happy Fujifilm, then this lens may, however only may, have had some real interest. That said, am still very happy with the so called "kit lens" that was purchased 2nd hand in mint condition. This excellent zoom continues to do all I ever ask & plus the assortment of Fuji (& Sigma) fast primes, will not see me being sucked into the vortex of Fuji Gas. BTW, still waiting for Fujifilm to join the rest of the competition with modern , fast and accurate AF, the company appears indifferent.

From all I've heard, the 15-45 punches up. Handling is kinda cruddy due to power zoom, but IQ better than the other XC budget standard lenses. At least at 26mp.

@philipcooper8297 15 дней назад
I still own the xc 15-45mm and the IQ is genuinelty amazing. The OIS isn't that effective, but still usefull. My copy of the xc 15-45mm is corner to corne shapr regardless of the focal lenght; stop it down to f/5.6-f/7 to get there though. Not even my all time favourite xf 18-135mm gets this sharp between 18mm and let's say 30mm. That being said the xf 18-135mm has amazing OIS (hand held 135mm at 1/20 amazing), but costs considerably more than the xc 15-45mm.

I recently returned the X-T50 camera because it had some issues. After updating to the latest firmware, I found that it didn't work well with multiple lenses. Specifically, my 150-600mm FujiFilm lens, which previously worked great before the firmware update, started producing blurry images. Additionally, I encountered two bugs in the camera. One issue was getting stuck in Shutter Priority mode even with the correct settings. The only way to get out of it was to switch the camera into Auto mode, take a photo, and then switch back to a different shutter speed. Another problem was that the Focus peaking feature didn't work if I hot swapped the lenses; I had to shut down the camera when swapping lenses to make focus peaking work again. Overall, the X-T50 is a great small camera if you don't upgrade the firmware. However, the ergonomics are not great as I found myself accidentally hitting buttons while trying to hold the camera. On the positive side, the Film dial is powerful for making Fuji recipes, as it allows you to give your recipe a different look on the fly. However, there's a drawback: when you change the film dial setting, it will keep your current settings but use a new baseline. This means that if you look at your photos later, it will show you the film dial baseline and not the original one in your recipe, making it easy to lose your created look if you don't write it down. In my opinion, once you've nailed your looks down, the dial becomes a waste of space. (to explain this more). Custom look Kodax 200, baseline Clasic chrome, settings adjusted, save. Now you can turn the film dial to something else but you still have Dodax 200 with the baseline changing which makes for cool new looks. 7 custom settings now become 7x however many the dile allows you to use. Considering the price, I would recommend spending the extra hundred bucks to get the X-T5. With the X-T5, you get dual card slots, better grip, similar size, better battery life, improved ergonomics, and an actual ISO button. With the ability to use custom functions and set custom Fn buttons, there's no need for the film simulation dial.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 16 дней назад
I don’t have an X-T50, and I’m not likely to replace my X-Pro3 with one, but I’m pro-film-sim-dial. Personally, I think ISO dials are overrated. I shoot base in some situations, and I’ll shoot auto for the other 90% of the time. And Fuji’s auto ISO setting are fantastic. I can have three auto modes, each with a minimum shutter speed and a maximum ISO. I can have one which is very loose, and one which is tight. I find a button to go into that menu is sufficient, particularly since there’s an exposure compensation dial so handy. That’s the one I can’t live without. But if you aren’t shooting purely raw, I think there’s a tonne of potential to the film sim dial. Have a baseline recipe, and float various sims on top. It just works in a slightly different way and folks aren’t used to it yet. But folks kinda weren’t used to how the film sims worked at all when Fuji started out. The world of recipes had to develop and grow over the years. Now it’s reached a decent stride, and I think it’s telling that one of the biggest boosters of the film recipe movement, Ritchie of Fuji X Weekly, has done a lot of exploring with the film sim dial. There’s a lot of potential in the core recipe and changing the film sim to alter the look of the shot you want, and the number of ready-to-use recipes on a camera just went up massively. I get why someone who only shoots raw and only shoots manual mode might not feel useful. But just get yourself a pro camera and don’t worry about the entry-mid camera. Let Fuji cook, since many of the unusual things they’ve done before, and folks weren’t used to at the time, are the reasons we love Fuji now. If an X-Pro4 has a TX-1/XPan 65:24 aspect ratio crop mode and a film sim dial, I’d be interested in trading in my current kit for it.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 16 дней назад
I’ll add: Pentax does something really interesting with their dials. Many of their higher end cameras have a two dial set-a custom dial, and a dial which controls which mode the custom dial is in. On my K-1, there’s ISO, EV comp, HDR settings, frame rate, crop mode, and more. Probably about 8 options. The KP I used to have also had some custom settings, and you could select options in the menus for focus peaking, their equivalent of film sim, program line (switch between high-speed, or shallow DOF or wide DOF, or maximizing MTF, and so forth). It’s a great system. I know some folks don’t really use EV compensation on the Fuji cameras. If that dial and the film sim dial became a custom dial structure like the Pentax, it’d have ISO, EV, Film Sim, Peaking, burst rate, white balance, and so forth. That’d be truly fantastic. Have about 6 of the most common settings printed on the dial, and 3 custom choices, set through the menus.

The Leica I could flip and make money on but that's something I don't like and wouldn't do. decisions, decisions!!

Great, real world, review as always! XT sized body with IBIS, and previous generation sensor/processor at a lower price point would have sold better I think. Rangefinder style I find hard to get on with and have quickly sold X-Pro's, but that's just me, so XE would not work for me. More likely I'll keep an eye on used XT-50 prices and one day upgrade my T30, but in no rush.

I bought an XT-50 last month. It’s my first Fuji and I’m still struggling to adapt! For me, there’s too many buttons and they’re in the wrong place, eg the Q button is exactly where I accidentally press it when getting the camera out of the bag. I’ve mapped the Q menu to the small button near the shutter release and turned off all the other buttons and dials on the right hand side of the camera except the one next to the EVF which I use to toggle between EVF and rear screen. I shoot Auto-ISO for 95% of the time so not having a dial on the top doesn’t matter much to me. I don’t use recipes or film sims or any of the custom profiles so the film sim dial is only helpful in quickly switching between a colour view and a b&w view. The day after I bought it I wished I’d bought the XT-5 but then I came to my senses and realised that I wanted the smaller size, lighter weight and that having the pop-up flash was handy for a bit of fill flash even though I hardly ever use flash.
