A tombeau is a piece of funeral music in French baroque. It mixes feeling of sadness and serene resignation. "Une plainte" in French means in this context an expression of sadness and sorrow. The best English translation is "lamentation".
The theorbo is really where you shine the brightest. Amazing work. Upon reading the title, I thought, "Tombeau? MESdemoiselleS -plural!? How many of his relatives did the composer have to bury when he wrote this piece?" But it turns out that despite the name, a "tombeau" could also be dedicated to a living person. I'm learning new things about my own native language thanks to you. 😄
As far as I know, this tombeau was written for de Visée's daughters - they may have died during birth.. Unfortunately very little information about Robert de Visée's life has survived. We still have his music though!
A tombeau means a memorial (tombstone) rarely applied to living persons in 18C France, and common on harpsichord literature of the same period. The music is clearly a deeply sad lament - a Plainte. It would appear that de Visée's two daughters died young or in childbirth. Tragic and sublime music. The full title is La Plainte ou Tombeau des Mesdemoiselles de Visée, filles de l'Auteur,
The title we can find in the Saizenay Manuscript says: La Plainte ou Tombeau de Mesdemoiselles de Visée, Allemande de Mr leur Pere. It basically means the same thing but I'm curious from which source does your version come from?
@@levezinet You're right, "La Plainte" pretty much confirms that this is strictly a lament for the deceased. I was so focused on the other part of the title that I didn't think about that before writing! Smallpox, among other diseases, also killed an absurd number of children before they reached school age. De Visée's daughters might have died during an epidemic.
