That’s actually wrong about the pedestrian crossing. Examiner will expect you to stop fully until they crossed the crossing. I got a serious for this in my test 😢
@SimonBrownDriving
@SimonBrownDriving День назад
Difficult to see the right side edge of the crossing as I zoomed the video in for the RU-vid short but they were on the pavement when the front of our car moved onto the crossing. Definitely a good point though, unless there's an island in the middle like the one further up this road towards Asda.

Are these unmarked pedestrian crossings in the town centre covered in the highway code? I thought they were effectively zebra crossings, but I can't find anything about them, so perhaps they don't technically give any priority to pedestrians waiting?
@LeoGB
@LeoGB День назад
Though in this instance since the pedestrian was crossing (not waiting), they have priority
@SimonBrownDriving
@SimonBrownDriving День назад
@@LeoGB So as far as I'm aware, the changes of road surface and dropped kerbs at where the mam was crossing invite pedestrians to cross but aren't zebra crossings or controlled crossings and therefore the pedestrians shouldn't assume they have priority or a "right to cross" if that makes sense. However, you can see where the situation can get unsafe as pedestrians see the surface and dropped kerbs as a "safe haven". Green cross code still needs to apply from the pedestrians point of view but as drivers we have to be on the lookout for pedestrians in that environment. I took the decision to get my student to stop in this case as the man was in a precarious position and vehicles behind us potentially wouldn't look for him or see him whilst he's already out in the road. As we were moving slowly having only just cleared the zebra crossing it was perfectly safe for us to slow to a stop for him. It's a difficult one on that road, high risk area and that's why the speed limit is 20mph on it. Definitely not a good idea to try and cross from behind a queue or cars or in-between vehicles though.
@LeoGB

@SimonBrownDriving 4 дня назад
Hey there, if you find yourself in the wrong lane on Trench Lock or any junction for that matter and it's not safe to "fix" it safely, keep in the lane you are in and go the incorrect direction. You'll have gone the wrong way but you'll have still done it safely. If you are taking your driving test and are following the sat nav, it will re-direct you. Sometimes adding a few minutes to your journey because you've taken the wrong exit is far safer than trying to cut across a lane late and potentially causing issues to other vehicles. Hope that helps.

Hi, Simon Please at 1:35 (time on video), say if on your test, you don't change the right signal to left signal but you drift towards the left. Will you be marked down because I thought it was the road widening up so with the choice of two lanes, be on the left. So if one drifts to the left with the right signal on and then after signal left to turn to KFC would that be a fault. Please clarify for me. Thanks
@SimonBrownDriving
@SimonBrownDriving Месяц назад
So this is a weird one, personally I'd prioritise mirror checks on the left hand side over anything else as you need to know it's safe to move across and no one is coming round the side of you quickly. The reason I indicate when I'm moving across is because I've had instances in the past of vehicles trying to push round to the KFC exit from the middle lane (which is super dangerous) and also vehicles trying to push past me to the left before I've had chance to move across to the left side/lane. I get my students to do it on lessons and in their test scenario because sometimes they delay when they move across to the left slightly, sometimes they linger a bit too much to the right because they are concerned about traffic on the left side of them. The left signal tells others what their intentions are and gives them a bit more time and space to be comfortable to move across to the left. Hope that makes sense

Question for you regarding steering, when turning sharp corners for example, are you allowed to let the steering wheel run back through your hands. I was taught differently but my daughter seems to think that it’s ok as long as it is controlled. I’ve told her not to do it 😂.
@SimonBrownDriving
@SimonBrownDriving Месяц назад
@@neilwalton7955 Hey Neil, so I think it's unofficially called "slipping the wheel" (it's what I call it anyway haha). As long as the driver maintains full control while it's happening and the examiner feels that it is safe then yes it's fine to do and occasionally quite beneficial actually as well. The steering rigidity of driving tests has altered quite a bit even since I took my driving test (2005) and as long as the examiner is happy the student has full control and safety is adhered to, the rigid steering techniques everyone assumes are needed for a driving test aren't quite as rigid if that makes sense?

@@3l1t3buddy3 Hey there, frustratingly there are no speed change gateway signs as you leave Oakengates in the direction we go on test. I have emailed the council and the appropriate people many times about this (that road has just been shut for a few weeks as well so I hoped they would be sorting signs out there but they haven't). The main thing to bear in mind is that a lot of 20mph zones (in England anyway, let's not talk about Wales haha) usually are in high traffic areas with lots of traffic calming measures in place. For example; mini roundabouts, road humps, pedestrian crossings etc. You also get 20mph zones around high street areas (Wellington, Telford Town Centre, Dawley and Newport high streets) due to the increased risk levels. So around the section of road very close to the high street it's a 20mph speed limit but once you past the roundabout and free from the traffic calming measures we safely assume it's 30mph again. Not ideal I know and it definitely helps to know about the change in advance so you are prepared for it both on driving tests and when you are driving around Telford but the high street section justifies it along with the increase in speed once you are clear of the high street. Hope that makes sense and helps. I will keep emailing the council regarding it because it's unfair. Thanks 🙏

At the Hadley park roundabout with only half of the sign, there are 3 lanes on the approach that you took to it - is the left lane for 1st exit only, middle lane for exits up to 12 o’clock, and the right lane for all exits past 12 o’clock?

@SimonBrownDriving 2 месяца назад
Hey there, if you mean when you're coming out of Hortonwood, the middle lane has always confused me as there are no markings on any of them. But yes I tend to use the left lane to turn left down to Trench Lock Gyratory, middle lane if I was going to Denso (and possibly even the Fallowfield although that one feels ok in either the middle or the right) and then right lane for Whitchurch/Wellington routes. Just be careful though because the lanes on the roundabout itself don't really marry up position wise with the lanes on approach so it's very easy to wander across different lanes accidentally, I see a lot of drivers do it.
