My names Anna and I have quite a few jewelled lacertas. I've kept an adult pair for over a year now, and they produced 24 babies earlier this year.

It can be hard to find information about them, so I'm hoping I can provide some. Although they are hardy, they have quite high requirements in order to live their life to the fullest.

I think they are an amazing species in so many ways, and I think they make amazing pets when they are properly cared for.

Hello, what are those white bottles that you have stuck to the walls of the terrarium with holes? Why do you use them? Thank you.
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 месяца назад
Hello, they're just single use plastic containers that were supposed to be for sauces or something small. I cut a small hole and painted them or used silicone to stick Coco fibre to. Then I stuck the rim to the enclosure wall to make tiny wall hides. I used some with their lids for normal hides too.

Thank you! Have you managed with the humidity yet? I can't say I've had any humidity problems but I'm also not very strict with it. I find the basking lamps lower the humidity a lot in that area during the day, while cooler areas stay the same as my house. They raise overnight which is good as that happens naturally with real weather.

@@jewelledlacertacare2712 yeah came up with my own solution of just drilling a few holes big enough to put some extra vents in to increase air flow and the humidity now is perfect

I'm so obsessed with these guys and cannot wait for the day that I can finally get one. They are so entertaining with how active and alert they are and their colors are stunning! Did it take a lot of work to tame them or were they friendly/docile from the beginning?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 10 месяцев назад
It took a long time to tame them. Luna (the female) never warmed up to me. Sol (the male) I still have and he's around 6 now. He was always more calm, but age and the time he's known me has made him very tame now. He lives in a new enclosure in the living room, which is a very busy room, and he confidently watches my cat, large dog, TV, everything. He's not as tame as a beardie, if he comes out of his enclosure he has to stay on a person or a table, if he goes on the floor then he thinks you're a predator. He's happy to climb on anyone though.

Hi again. Regarding that they manage their own weight. My adult male have eaten alot since I got him from the petshop 3 weeks ago. But the last 4 days he haven't been interested in food. So my guess is that he feel a bit chubby and lessen his appetite. So I plan on skip a day or two before I offer him again. Must add that he mainly eats dubia roaches. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it! I'm no diet expert but from what I've heard dubias are a good staple. The more variety the better, but that's hard to do in reality, so having a healthy staple and then adding extra variety when you can is the next best thing.

One of if not the most informative care videos out there. I recently lost my 6 year old male Spinky to a suddenly kidney failure. I was devastated. But I was lucky to get his brother and he is also 6 years and very healthy. I was very outgoing and food motivated in the petshop I got him from and a employee favorite. I have had him just about a week when I writhing this. He is still shy and needs time to adjust to his new enclosure. But he are doing progress and and eats from his food dish and inspect the terrarium and don't mind if I sit outside the enclosure and watch him. He still hides from movements when moving away or approaching, but with time and doing things on his terms I thinks he will be a sosial boy like his brother. Looking forward to start tong feeding and building trust. Do you think I am on the correct path?

Hello, how is she doing now? It's normal for them to vanish for a few days napping sometimes. It can also be a sign something's wrong, so although she's likely fine, since it's not a brumating season I think it's fine to check on her. I check on mine when they do that, then I put stuff back how it was (or rebury them) and they usually come out by themselves in a few hours. It can be very tricky to find them when they've buried themselves because they're the same temp as the soil and are often so covered in soil it's hard to see them too.

@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 2 года назад
@@TobysExotics seems like there's a lot of influences, like the size and health of their mum. The mum of this clutch was like 2-3 years old and it was her second year of breeding. One of the babies in this video went on to accidentally lay fertile eggs at 4-5 months old, they aren't normally capable of breeding that young. From talking to other lacerta breeders, seems like this clutch was particularly healthy and fast growing for it to happen. The babies that hatched from the accidental clutch were small and much weaker. Their care has an effect too of course, I fed the babies as much as they wanted. They eat all day so I kept a bowl of worms, plus other insects lived in the soil that they foraged for. I'd recommend getting a parasite test for yours, that can affect their growth a lot and they can get them easily. Does yours have any other issues apart from size?

I'm not sure if I can keep them outdoors at all as I live near the border of Scotland, and the outdoor examples for them are southern England, where the temperatures are much milder. @jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
Brumation is something I'm not confident enough on yet, as I've only done it a couple times, and neither times really went to plan. It's so hard to find any info about it, I just go off of a mix of brumation guides based on other species. I feed them as much as they will eat in a sitting, and then I usually pop some more food in their tank or food bowl. I use ceramic dog food bowls for worms so they can't escape. How much they eat varies a lot, so I just let the individuals decide, they usually have a good sense for it. For babies I aim to always have food available for them, since they're growing so much. The adults get fed nearly every day during the spring, but closer to every other day by the time it's autumn. Sol and Luna can easily eat 10 adult locusts in a day if they're particularly hungry. Other days they will just eat a few. And thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

can i co hab 2 females in a 120 gallon enclosure?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
It really depends on the individuals whether they can co-hab happily at all. Some will peacefully share space, others will chase others down for territory. Females tend to be more physically aggressive, relying on biting. They also tend to flunctuate their moods/behaviours quite dramatically at times, particularly during spring/breeding season. So even pairs that live peacefully half the year, it can flip to violence quickly. I really recommend having an extra set up, as the chances of this happening for at least portions of the year are rather high in my experience. If they don't get along, there doesn't seem to be a risk of life threatening injuries, at least I've never experienced anything close, and other breeders I've spoken to haven't either. It's more that they can bully each other, prevent another from eating, and cause stress. Im not really sure how big 120 gallon enclosures are, as in the UK we go by the length/height/depth. The design of the enclosure can go a long way in reducing hostility, having a lot of visual barriers let's them have their own space and avoid each other when they want to. My most recent video has my adult lacerta pair, and their tank is set up so that they can't see the whole enclosure from anywhere, so a dominant lacerta can't keep watch everywhere, the more submissive lacerta can still get to many areas without being seen if they want to. There's also over 100 litres of substrate which they've built a little tunnel network in. Having a motion detection security camera is very handy for co-habbing. Then you can see what they act like without you there, it's often very different and can be very reasurring to know whether there's any secret bullying.

They seem to be very high in demand, but low in supply for the US. This is a good time of year to be looking for one, your best bet would be to contact as many reptile shops as you can that can transport one to you, or that's within driving distance, and give them your contact details to call ASAP if they get any in stock. Shipping across countries is very complicated and expensive from what I've read. If you have the money to spare, their are travel companies that specialise in flying pets, you can get a quote from them, contact a breeder in the UK, and ask if they are willing to sell to you. You would have to handle all the arrangements though. UK sites where jewelled lacertas are often listed (from spring through to autumn) are preloved, gumtree, and pets4homes.

The perlite was just to substitute a drainage layer, since perlites fine to get mixed into the soil over time, and is often used for plants to increase drainage. I've never done a real drainage layer, and I'm not knowledgeable about them, so take my advice on them with a grain of salt. It was just to try and prevent the bottom of the soil being damp all the time, to help the plants out so their roots aren't as prone to moulding. Its great thats your preparing so much before getting one, it really helps reduce the stress for both you and the lacerta. Unfortunately 2 of the have died. Baby A had been hiding away and when I spotted him a few days later he had lost weight and was much skinnier then the others. I put him in hiw own set up, and fed him a liquid diet from the vets but he passed away after a few days. He only weighed about a gram. A few weeks later the same happened to another one, and this time round i even put him in an incubator to keep his temperature stable, as neither had been self regulating. Unfortunately he passed away even faster. They had a pretty rough start in life, as their mother had been only 5 months old when laying them, which is why they were so small. The mother wasnt intended to breed, she had been living with 3 of her siblings, and I had thought they were all the same gender. I also had no idea they could breed so young! Lesson learnt there. I think the rough start must have made them weaker then normal. Out of the 7 eggs laid, only 4 hatched. in comparision, my adult female last year laid two clutches of 24/25 eggs with only one egg failing to hatch in each clutch. Thankfully the 2 which survived are healthy and have been rehomed, although at an older age then normal since they were still small for their age.

@@jotalbot2719 I have heard that males tend to be more confident and can become tamer. I've just got the one adult of each gender and it is the male that's more confident, but with the 23 hatchlings I raised last year, 3 stood out as being particularly confident and interesting in handling, 2 of those turned out to be female! So it seems to really just depend on the individual. The only consistent thing is that the females are more moody, their behaviour and attitude varies much more, which I suppose is their hormones. My adult female will be very timid most the time, and then have days where she's extremely confident and fearless. Other times during breeding season she can be riled up and aggressive (although never towards me) and has tried to fight any animal that passes her enclosure. The females tend to be more aggressive in general, but again it does depend. When puberty started with the hatchlings last year, it was usually the odd female that would decide to chase every sibling around. They also go for face biting, I guess to make up for their smaller size. The males tend to just try and indimidate with stalking behaviours, making the most of their size. If your planning to have yours as tame as possible, I'd recommend buying directly from a breeder and mentioning that. I would give the most confident babies to buyers who wanted to spend a lot of time with their lacerta, and who showed they were going to provide a really good home. Good luck for finding a lacerta, and your always welcome to ask me any questions or concerns 🙂

I just wonder, how can you tell the difference between male and female lacertas when they're just a couple months old?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
Personally, I cant tell the difference till they're more like 5-6 months but even then I'm pretty bad at telling. Signs to look for are the femoral pores become a bit bigger in males and produce a visible waxy substance, but if that's not there, it's hard to say if they're female or if they just haven't developed that far yet. Males get a slight bulge at their cloaca, as well as larger heads. The blue spots stay smaller in females, and they start to spread out more and get bigger in males. Sperm plugs with their poop is a sure sign of a male, but that doesnt seem to happen till at least 6 months or so. With my last clutch, the males seemed to develop their back colours quicker, but that's just my limited experience.

I have a head start with mine as they're usually a group, so it just takes one baby to be brave. Then the others will watch the brave baby with horror, then confusion as they see brave baby doesnt get eaten. After a bit they start copying, as they copy and learn off each other a lot when they're very young. Sounds like your doing everything right though, and it'll pay off in time 🙂

Thanks 🙂 Its purposely just for raising babies in, nearly all have been rehomed now. There was probably about a dozen living in there at the time of the video, but once they reached puberty most became territorial and were split out between more enclosures. Theres currently just 2 sisters living in there, they dont show signs of terrirorial behaviour, and are 8-9 months old, maybe about half the size of an adult. When they get a little bigger they will get upgraded to a bigger enclosure. Also, sadly, all the viv plants have died since then!

@@flapas4403 I use a desert strength UVB light, and either a standard or hallogen basking bulb. I try to keep the surface temperature on the hot side varied, by stacking objects so that there are areas closer or further from the bulb, so that they can choose their own temparature, usually between 30-45 degrees surface temp. I keep their cold side about 20-25 degrees ambient temp (if it reaches 30 degrees i turn all their heating off). I try to copy the length of day in Spain/northern italy. Since its winter, they only having heat and lighting 9 hours of the day (apart from the hatchlings, they have 12 hours). I provide extra heating at night if it drops below 15 degrees. Since i have a lot of them, i just heat the room instead of the vivs at night. A heat mat or ceramic heat emiter, with a thermostat, would be ideal for a single enclosure.

I was curious maybe you would have an idea for me I was making some small progress in terms of my baby jeweled lacerta being ok in my presence and enjoying tong feeding, coming onto my hand for a mealworm. Then all the sudden its like something snapped and its personality totally switched, it was when I had to wait for an order of feeders so I stopped tong feeding it for 2 days (I fed it fruit in a bowl while I was out of feeders). Now it refuses to tong feed, hides every time it sees me, and if its out while I'm replacing its water or something it will hiss/mouth gape. I'm just really confused and at a loss of where to go from here because it feels like I'm back at the start. Sorry for the long message, do you have any idea what this might be or have to work from here? (Also just for reference it's a 5 month old female and I have had it for just a little over a month, this behaviour has been going on for about a week now)
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
Is her appetite and other behaviour, like basking, normal? They do seem to forget taming progress, but they learn it faster each time. I think the only thing you can do is go back to the start, do what you did the first time around, and she will progress faster then the first time, since you'll have more practice, and she's learnt your not a threat once before. I find females tend to be more unpredictable, they definitely have more dramatic moods, and behaviour to go along with that. My adult female can go from very timid, to trying to fight my beardie through the glass doors (hes like twice her weight, minding his own business, having a strole on the floor). Yours is likely going through puberty too, which seems to cause some personality changes in many reptiles. It can be disheartening when there seems to be a setback, but your doing really well to have gotten her to eat out your hand in just a month. When I first got my adults, it took several months for just one of them to go on my hand. Practice makes a big difference, as does the length of time they've known you.

@@jewelledlacertacare2712 That makes me feel a lot better to know that it takes a long time and it's normal to have setbacks. Thank you for all of that! Her behaviour has been normal, she's basking, looks healthy but I think she is on a food strike. @@emmas5 yeah their appetites vary a lot with my adults, they seem to have days where they eat a lot, then a few days where they eat nothing. Harder to tell with the teenage ones, as they're in bioactive vivs and can do their own hunting without me adding food very often. I'm guessing its winter in your area? They seem able to tell, even if you don't change the lighting, so that usually makes them eat less over all too. Does she have a favourite food? You could try offering her that, as a peace offering of sorts too. If shes a healthy weight then it shouldn't do her harm to fast for a bit, but i know it can be worrying, so it might reassure you if she does go for her favourite thing

@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
They seem to be like cats, some individuals do best alone, others can live together. In my experience, the females seem to be more aggressive and territorial, but not all. There is a great deal of variety in personalities. I have 2 sisters still living together, from the same clutch as the babies in this viv. There has been no aggression between them, and they will sometimes sunbathe together. They are both very shy with me, so perhaps its that they both have submissive personalities. Total opposite to miss sassypants, yet they grew up with her. For any group, I'd recommend having extra set ups available in case there is fighting. My adults display territorial behaviour based on the time of year, and it can start up quite suddenly. They currently have an enclosure each, but the female is allowed to enter the males if she wants to, and can choose to live with him. She comes to the glass and makes it obvious when she wants to get away from him. They live in "loose colonies" in the wild, so this method seems to allow them to replicate that. Motion based security cameras are also incredibly helpful for groups, and should pick up on any obvious fighting. The enclosure also has a big impact on territorial behaviour, include plenty of everything, lots of line of sight blocks (foliage, cork bark tubes are great for this) and multiple food sources, some of them being quite hidden, can prevent a dominant lizard from being able to bully a submissive one as easily.
