Growing for Today and Thinking of Tomorrow. This channel is about one Small Farmer trying to make a difference in our modern challenging times. How can we grow healthy, nutritious, affordable food? How can we farm without outside inputs like pesticides, fertilizers, and water. How can local community participate on farms in mutually beneficial ways? These are all questions that I am determined to find solutions for and I want to document them here.
My name is Mike Barnes and along with the help of my family and community, I am creating a farm that can demonstrate how we can grow food by working with livestock, reintegrate wildlife, attract pollinators, and heal our soil and environment. I am inviting in my local community and beyond to share my journey here.

Polytape has more resistance than solid wire, depending on the fencer may need to run solid wire and make sure run jumpers. I run 4 jumpers on half acre. redundancy. I run tpost for corners make a stronger frence for large area. I also use electric cord reels to roll up polytape, makes it easy to use next time. This year started using 14 gauge aluminum. Had some problems in a field with coon. Goin to try a electric cord reel to roll up, but not sure will work well, might need go something bigger diameter to roll up the wire. I grow couple acres sweet corn.
Use dog proof traps. start trapping early spring time. Catch the mother coons...... and the baby coons never make it. Or..... you end up dealing with both....along with the Papa coons too. Ive caught over 300 coons in the last year and half !
I understand about the pent up resentment, they have ruined all of my tomato plants, all that time and effort wasted, getting my electrical fence installed this weekend thanks for the explanation
I have been doing this for a few months and decided to search the web to see trees older than mine that were grown with this practice. Found some really good ideas and tips but finding this video is funny knowing this guy and I walked through each of our gardens and had the exact same thought path.
Just found your video and it looks like you have the same patch as me. Great information on picking seed. My farm is also in Ontario and I could call my farm lambs quarters 2😊. I have managed to get them under control this year as much as I can.. They are however relentless. Spent 4 hours cultivating the corn with a stir up hoe. How do cultivate such a large patch without pulling up the corn? Mine patch is 50 x 250. I hope I’ve suppressed the weeds enough that they won’t interfere with the corn. You mentioned that you are organic. How do you keep the bugs off the corn?

I have heard that you can bag up the pollen part and put a bag over the ear to stop cross pollination. You will have to hand pollinate from the bag to the ear. Hope someone tries this I haven't yet. Also There is BT for corn that keeps the worms from eating your corn.
I have about 2 yards of them but i had no idea i cut them During winter. Now they have berries. But my husband spray them with Poison oak killer. Poison oak died but not the berries!!! But not sure if they are safe to eat now. 😂
These grow like weeds here in NW Ohio. Every tree line or creek line has large patches. We gather the raspberries by 10’s of pounds. They are a firm berry compared to garden red raspberries and hold up well after picking good for freezing aswell. Have a Range from tart to very sweet. Only Down fall is very seedy
They berry only on last years new growth (the purple canes). Last years fruiting cane will die of over winter leaving only the new growth from last year. Berry ripens in mid June here in NW Ohio. I have a dedicated 10x10ft garden of wild raspberries plants I maintain Tip: With any raspberry once the plant is done with berries i cut those canes off and remove them this leaves room for the new canes that will berry out next year to grow. I also cut off and tip the new growth canes over the summer when they reach 4ft tall this cause the plant to grow side branches. These side branches increases the number of berries. Instead one one long thin cane of berries you get a thick short cane and several branches of berries doubling or tripling the berries
Last year, they grow new shoots called primocanes. The primocanes does not produce any berries. Then they go through winter dormancy. As they emerge from dormancy, the primocanes have turned woody and is now called floricanes. "Flor" for flowers. And when early to mid summer hit is when you get the berries. Mostly late June and early July. And oh yeah. There is some everbearing varieties called Niwot and Sweet Repeat. Both thorned varieties. You get 2 crops per year. And there's at least 2 thornless varieties called "Tahi" and "Born Free."
These are a zone 4 and must be carefully sited where I live in Alberta. Best traits are the size, firmness and thornless canes, downside not the most flavorful, nor of best coloring, though definitely still a keeper for me! I intend to hybridize these with some prairie hardy types. Thanks for your review! 👍
I'm not an expert, but I've been told that the multiple llamas would separate from the group of sheep and do their own thing... since llamas are flock animals, they won't be alone, they are forced to be with the sheep/goats
@@lambsquartersfarm So someone who wanted added protection who already had the sheep / goats and 1 llama should get a dog? What is up with the video's that say get a guard alpaca? No need to get a dog or llama. Are alpacas that tough because that sounds like click bait? I have seen get a guard goose video's before too. The right goose could be good at defense and offense. It is cool if you are not sure on these.

Especially the silt, to add the material for reducing the sodium. It makes the soils sandy.
Thank you for the video. I found this video is very useful. After watching this video, I collected some runners, cut them like you demonstrated in the previous video, and put them in the water. I am just wondering if I should put liquid fertiliser in the water because I thought the nutrition was cut off from their mother plants. I added rooting powder in the water to expect the roots grow faster. Do you think it is no need to put anything in the water?
