Raised in Kansas, I earned a Ph.D. in physiology from Kansas State University and completed post-doctoral training at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine in Denver. I'm now a cardiopulmonary and exercise physiologist at the University of Hawaii in Hilo! My research interests include understanding the mechanisms of exercise fatigue in hypoxia in health and disease. This channel showcases some of our outdoor adventures (mostly hunting and fishing) and provides insights into how a physiologist takes on new physical challenges and outdoor pursuits on the Big Island of Hawaii and around the globe.

Aloha bro! I’ve actually purchased a Hoyt and spent some time hunting sheep on Mauna Loa before the last eruption. I’m living in Florida now so have been adjusting to deer hunting from a tree stand. Not near as fun as the spot/stalk of big island though. Hoping to get back to the islands for a hunt soon though. I do pop back for work here and there! Good luck out there brother!
Mauna Kea is magical, I hunted it well for close to 30 years, before the new Saddle Rd. Sacred moments and food on the table. It's nice to be up there late in the day when the mist rolls in.

We will have to shoot a video when you're on Big Island! Those Opelu Kala are great to eat. They don't have very large gut cavities so most of their body is high-quality meat! We can dive this same spot when you're out here!
Thanks man! We usually quarter them in the field and bring the ribs and other odds and ends with us. All of it goes into game bags and into a pack. You could also bring the whole pig out too, depending on size. The whole pig from this hunt fit in my 55 liter pack. It was heavy but well worth it 🤙🤙🤙

It was public, and you’re bang on, mate. I need an orange vest. The rules vary depending on the publication you read. When we first moved here I read the rules from this: dlnr.hawaii.gov/huntered/files/2013/09/Quick-Guide-to-Hunting-in-Hawaii-Brochure.pdf But upon further inspection, the regulations actually read “Any person who hunts, serves as a guide, or accompanies or assists a hunter on public hunting areas is required to wear an exterior blaze orange garment which may be a shirt, vest, coat, or jacket while they are engaged in those activities.” Note that a hat isn’t included in the list. So I gotta wear a vest next time!

Another informative video! Is this Unit A? I am planning to hunt this Unit in 2 weeks. DLNR rep told me that upcoming eradication is on Feb 17-18. I am assuming the hunting should be good before that.
Yes this is unit A! They don’t eradicate the pigs and it’s been quite wet here lately so the hunting should be good when you arrive. You might get a chance on a ram too if they don’t eradicate them first!

We ground some of it into breakfast sausage (check out my older video for the recipe), regular ground for burgers and chili, and saved some cuts for curing into a ham. I’m actually prepping the brine for the ham as we speak! Looking forward to that for New Year’s Day. What’s your favorite dish to use them in?

Good info. Do you find pigs in the jungle who may not travel as much have more “white meat”? Our wild pigs in CA seem to have a good amount of “white meat” compared to red and they taste great!
Yep- seen most guys on other islands usually bait in the jungle. In CA we get regular wild pigs- no javi’s. Good example would be to check RU-vid for Sonoma lake pig hunting.

Ahh did they? Wasn’t aware DLNR was getting after them so much up there. We saw some tracks that day but only spotted a young pig (couldn’t see the sow) while driving out. Bummed they cut down on the sheep population up there! Would love to get a big mouflon.
Scott Ferguson yeah they kinda slowed down but now there isn’t that much so they don’t need to go as often from what I’m told! I’ve been wanting to head up there just to take a drive but haven’t in a while

A free-diving course would be a good place to start. You could probably book a good one down in Florida or pop out to Hawaii. We have some great instructors here. If you make it out to Hawaii let me know and maybe we could take you out! I grew up in Kansas, so I can appreciate your pain 🤙🤙🤙.
