A very strange and dangerous way of preparing a Grignard reagent. Always use a three-neck flask, a dropping funnel and the correct Reflux cooler (Dimroth). If the alkyl halide is added to the magnesium all at once, a runaway reaction can easily occur and if the Ether boils too vigorously a lot of byphenyl is formed. This is definitely not university standard.
When it was said "Wipe the Glassware container down if you touch it with your hand," may I assume the comment was made to refer to an "ungloved' hand but touching with a "Clean Gloved Hand" is OK? I am new to this.
The amount of silver nitrate to be added is not clearly explained. There is no way to calculate how much AgNO3 is to be added without knowing what the salt is. Also, the HNO3 added will create spectator ions but H+ ions would react with chloride ions. Why not add a stir bar to get to dissolve or add a little heat? It is a good video but certain items need to be clarified.
