Such a good video. Ive been using 187 pro for many years but im tired of how bulky they are. I did feel the s one pad dig into my shin and it hurt.

Amazing review. I have the Pro Knee Gen 4. I'm gutted that S- One released the 4.5 with more padding not long after I shelled out for them! For me the Gen 4 pads are just a little under padded and I'm a bit tentative when I knee slide. Am thinking of using gaskets with the pads for a little more protection. I do with I could swap out my 4's for the 4.5's but they are an expensive pad so I guess I'll have to do.

A person's height it pretty much the only important factor when considering wheel base. A person's height is critical in determining center of gravity hence height is critical in selecting wheel base. A 14.25" wheel base for a person of 5'5" is like a 15.5" wheel base for a person of 6'3".

Would you say these pads would be fine for bmx? I watched your review and saw that you said they aren't the most comfortable when your leg is straight so that was a bit of a concern for me.
@SkateboardCalifornia

I think they would be quite uncomfotable for BMX since your knees are constantly bending. You want a very flexible pad for BMX.

Technically, yes, but you'd have to be going pretty slow. The contact-patch of the Big Stick is a lot smaller than a shoe. Foot-braking is still going to stop you faster.

I am telling you, these PRO 187 Killer pads have changed my life. I just got back into skating 6 months ago after 20 years of absence. I had Boneless knee pads...kept hurting my left knee...even when normal sliding (in Bonless'es defense, they are 20+ year old pads). My wife decided to get these pads for Christmas for me...I was highly skeptical...being 52...maybe I am just getting too old for this stuff. WELL, after my first slide, I was completely shocked that I didn't feel my knee--at all! After many slides since, it is a miracle of modern engineering how these 187's work. It is almost like the way they are designed to absorb the brunt force of a slide into other areas around the knee instead of the knee itself. Hope that makes sense. SO WORTH IT. #washingtonwheelspark #Sk8StGeorge

It’s a common error to fasten the top strap first on kneepads but if you read Killer187’s instructions (or anyone else’s) you’ll see that tightening the bottom strap first is key for keeping pad position while skating and preventing them from sliding off when landing on them. This is likely how you got your off center hit and thread damage. This is also why the lower strap doubles back and allows for better tightening leverage. The top strap on kneepads really only needs to be snug enough to keep them from flapping forward. You’ll also notice that you can crank that lower strap pretty good before it causes any discomfort. This allows a less tight top strap which great enhances mobility and comfort. The lack of excess neoprene on the back Velcro straps is a feature: way less bulk when closing the knee joint tightly. The lack of a true lame is also a feature that keeps the top of the pad hugging your knee, even after many hours of wear…. they’ll never be floppy. Yet they don’t significantly inhibit movement or comfort even when walking around with straight knees. Of course, they’re designed to have the most comfort (and function) with a bent knee. They’re pricey to be sure, but they’re comfortable and oh so protective for those of us rediscovering skating in our 50s. Also great for allowing your knees to last into your 50s! Awesome to see all these pads so carefully compared and in action. Your reviews strongly influenced my purchases many months ago and saved me tons of time and money, thank you!

Thanks for the very clear and thorough review. It was very helpful and pretty certain I’ll be ordering a pair this week. Sizing is a concern though… according to the Pro-Tec chart, I should be getting a large, but as a 6’4”, 240 Lb adult man, I’d think XL would be a better fit. Can the XL ones you’re wearing be snugged up if you were wearing shorts?

ah dang it i bought the 187 killer pads just 2 months before this video was released, i was debating between protec pros and the 187 pros but went with the 187s because more people left reviews about them and i was kinda urgent for it😢 now i think i should’ve gotten these instead as its way less bulky and the lame is more flexible than the ones on 187!! I wore my 187 pros for 5hrs a day for 5 days (it was for a camp) and becus of its design mainly for a bent leg, the kneepads were putting so much pressure under my kneecaps creating a bruise and hurts when youre walking in them
@SkateboardCalifornia
@SkateboardCalifornia Год назад
Ouch! Yeah, the 187 Killer Pads aren't bad, but I sure wouldn't want to wear them 5 hours a day for 5 days. That's a long time. I'm not surprised they were uncomfortable if you had them on for that long. Pro-Tec and ProDesigned are a lot more comfortable than 187. I've worn ProDesigned pads for about 3 or 4 hours with no issues.

@SkateboardCalifornia
@SkateboardCalifornia Год назад
Good question. Sizing is confusing. Most manufacturers want you to measure below-the-knee and above-the-knee. I have big thighs and small calves. So, if I go with the below-the-knee measurement, I end up with pads that are too small. So, I learned to only measure above my knee, and get that size.

I got these pads at the end of last year but due to terrible Irish weather, this morning was my first time skating them. Really, really comfortable, but as I was climbing out of the bowl after a run, one of the caps caught the heel of my opposite foot and just popped right off - when I went to reattach it I found that it wasn't the velcro that came off. The velcro that was on the inside of the cap was still attached to the rest of the pad. The plastic cap came away by itself. The adhesive on the back of the velcro was still pretty sticky and the cap seems to have stuck back on ok... but not great for their first time out - and such a tiny little knock to cause it!
@SkateboardCalifornia
@SkateboardCalifornia Год назад
Same thing happened to me, about 2 weeks after I made this video! I snagged the cap on the coping as I was climbing out of a pool and the cap popped off. But, I will say, it was a little chilly. I think perhaps the glue on the velcro was just a bit less flexible in the cold. I put the cap back on and had no issue since. If it ever happens again, perhaps replacing the velcro strips might help.

Someone told me that they are good, someone said that they are not of the best quality, so to speak, and someone just said not to bother and take 187 killer pads. but as I looked at your review, I immediately realized that this is an ideal option for me. They are not as bulky as the killer knee pads and I like that the best so thanks a lot as no one has said anything about these knee pads before.
