Keep in mind that not every species of wood will split this well. Elm, for instance, can only be sawn into planks. Also, these tools work best with green logs.

The project is currently at private beta phase. There is still some work to be done before the public beta / early access release. The development has been a bit slower than I was hoping for - party because of me needing to work for money, thus having less time for indie coding - and party because of my development plans growing more ambitious as the project goes on.

Wood Riven into lumber is usually stronger and way more stable than flat-sawn lumber. Going with the grain rather than fighting it.

I use dogwood gluts (wooden wedges) and I drive them with a hickory maul. You may not have any comparable hardwoods where you are, but dogwood gluts that I dried before using are still in very good shape after splitting several logs with them.

Did you think about splitting your boards parallel to one of the split sides instead of parallel to the bark? I've only ever split rough boards from shorter (<4') sections of oak, so there may be significant differences using softwood and working in longer lengths, but splitting parallel to one of the split sides worked well for me, and I figured the boards might be a little more stable with the growth rings running more face to face rather than edge to edge. I suppose your largest boards were a little bigger than they would have been if you took a similar sized tree and split them out the way I did, especially after I split the bark off.

I once visited an old man who was making wooden containers the traditional way. (I don't know the correct term in English, but imagine a barrel cut half so that it has a wide open mouth, walls made of split wood). He instructed me to split the pieces the way you mention, but didn't quite explain why. I'd guess you are right that it will make the pieces more stable. Then, another old man was making frame drums, and he split the frame pieces the same direction I do in this video. Again, no explanation given. So my reasoning was that maybe for longer pieces it will be easier this way, when the split flows naturally according the growth ring. But, sure - I'm not an expert in these techniques, just an experimenter =)

I'm definitely not an expert either. I'm barely a beginner. Thanks for sharing those two little stories. Maybe I'll experiment now and see if splitting between growth rings instead of across them makes it easier to split longer pieces. Lots of interesting things to consider. Thank you!

@@erkkaveli i agree, this method seems better for longer board. I have knotted crooked wood so we can see if this meyhod works for that.

Your videos are so touching. The end part had me in tears. I was wondering if you and maybe also Sami might one day have a kind of "camp," or "workshop" to teach people some traditional skills and maybe how to live in the wild for a week or two. I would certainly love to participate.

Wow nice job. For removing the inside of the quarter, I believe traditionally they chop across the grain every foot or so, then lengthwise. Hard to describe in text, but you can see it at 16:16 in the video "Medieval wood riving - An attempt to recreate craftsmanship" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BE2klxBE8QM.html

@Anthony Maurice I think it should be possible, and most likely pine has historically been used for arrows. I haven't tested it myself, but I'd like to try it one year. (Also, I remember Ernest Thompson Seton mentioning it in his book "Two Little Savages". If I remember correctly, the book has rather detailed how-to instructions on making arrows. They start by splitting a block of pine, and then rounding and straightening the split wood.)

@@erkkaveli oh, i see now. perhaps i will help him. thanks! I have my ways! ;) The ways is my muscle power! But mostly will power, because trees are heavy, and alots of resting in between rolling the lumbers. I bought one bowsaw from city store one time, but it broke.. so i lost the little "pin" that hold the saw together, maybe I will try making replacement out of sticks medieval style instead! Great idea.
