Steve Lawson - the UK's leading solo bass guitarist. Apparently :)

Hello! welcome - here we've got mostly a mixture of live and live-in-the-studio video. From gigs and from the recording sessions for my last few albums. Please do hit the 'subscribe' button to keep up to date, and have a browse around.

The playlists contain most of the video of me that's been posted on other people's channels, so you may want to have a rummage there too...
In Need Of Friends - solo bass live.

good question! It's passive.

@@quiquicampos ah yes, swapping out the pickups is one option but it may just be that the natural sound of the bass is not what you're looking for!

Thanks for this! I’ve been mostly using the compressor, so this definitely gives me some more ideas for digging into the overdrive

Ooh I can't wait to hear what you do with the overdrive - your sound already has such a defined attack, I can see the overdrive becoming a key part of your sound!!

@solobasssteve

@@Julesplaysbass yeah, I'm pretty sure you could do a pretty amazing version of a lot of the classic Rick tones - Chris Squire, Lemmy, Geddy. Having the EQ there would help counteract for of that inherent clackiness of the Rick and put some weight back into the sound x
@Tomallenbass

I need to get myself that distortion pedal, love that it keeps the low signal and only eq's the distorted part such a simple but clever detail
@solobasssteve

yup, it's a lovely addition. It's one of those little things that it's possible to build inside a multi FX but having it in front gives you that extra bit of control of what's going into the other box. I love it, even with all the processing power of the DuoX.
@looppool

Really nice demo, Steve. What is the processor that you are running everything through, per chance?
@solobasssteve

thanks Rick. it's the MOD Audio DuoX. The current version is called the Dwarf - Bob developed a plugin version of the Looperlative for it.

Loved this! Really dug the variations you worked into the loop around 8min in. I imagine you are using the Looperlative looper in the Mod DuoX? Were you creating those variations with the quantised replace function, just regular replace or both or some other way? Really dug the stuttering delay effect on the loop near the end.
@solobasssteve
@solobasssteve 4 месяца назад
Well spotted! It is indeed the Quantise replace function. I sometimes use it in conjunction with loop speed to make other kinds of weirdness happen 😂

Dig the way it responds to effects. There's a ton of great tones to boot. Seems extremely responsive to everything that you were throwing at it. Have you tried the v1 as well? I'm on the fence about which one I want.

Life is like a jigsaw. When the death of someone important to you happens the jigsaw breaks into pieces and you can't always make sense of what's left. Somehow you have to find a way to put some of these pieces back together again to make a new picture but that picture is never the same again. Music can help put some of these pieces together again.

Expressing loss comprehensively through music would be a very very long and rambling composition. It's a horribly empty and surreal sensation to translate into anything tangible. If I'd tried, it would have been the sound of black, but could at least have been titled "nothing left unsaid". I actually put my guitars away when my son died 4 years ago and haven't touched them since, probably never will. Worth remembering that your friend is probably equally sad for his part in what was not said but grateful for what was. The music is a very fitting and raw conversation with a friend. You did good.
@solobasssteve
@solobasssteve 9 месяцев назад
thanks for this Martin - what was unsaid was just that we hadn't spoken in a while and had so much more friendship to come. I'm fortunate that I got to tell him through his wife how much I treasured our friendship and his impact on my life. i'm so so sorry to hear about your son. Peace to you as you continue to build a life around the space he left. 💔

Beautiful cover. Sorry for your loss. I didn't know Pip Wilson, but this hits home, personally because Michael Been and the Call were from Santa Cruz. Michael passed away in 2010 at the age of 60,on the road as a sound engineer for his son, frontperson Robert Been's band, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. He was a great musician! He would have loved your cover of his tune. So would his son, who also covered this song at the time of his father's passing.

Stuart cann, Canning Town boy and a member of the mayflower massive 80,s and 90,s broke my heart to hear of Pips passing, a truly beautiful person. He was the one constant to many many of us in them dark days in East London and have no doubt saved many of us keeping us on a true path of salvation. Fly free my good friend, let us not mourn but celebrate his life and how many people he loved. Peace Pip, I know he will be singing his favourite band U2 high above. ⚒️⚒️
