Beautiful finishes especially the oil soaked piece. What oil do you use and can other oils also be used? Also I see you use the loose cotton buff wheels. Do they produce better results than a stitched cotton buff ? I make knives and wondered if I could get Deven better finishes with the loose cotton wheels??

I’ve been rubbing a paraffin candle on my wood pieces and buffing it out. I was just now looking for videos on making a wax paste because for some reason I thought it would be better. Then I came upon your video which made me realize I don’t need a paste! Thank you 😊

I never heard you say anything about either the initial compound (was that brown Tripoli?) or what kind of wax you used. 😞

This is how I remember getting taught in Wood Shop classes back in the 80's. It's a slow, methodical, and fun process to get wood pieces polished and waxed just right. I like how he mentions about getting the piece flung across the room! LOL, I can't tell you how many times that happened to me back then! God, I am sooooo lucky that I never got whacked or hit anyone else.

I would love to try this on my ash guitar body. Would putting a water based sanding sealer on the wood prior to staining inhibit the wax from settling into the grain?

Parrafin wax in itself is not protective at all nor is it durable. The better wax is a beeswax/carnuaba mix. Carnuaba on its own is too brittle so it is best applied using inexpensive beeswax/carnauba mix. Built up in thin coats with 24hrs between each allowing surface oxidation and hardening...then re buff, and then add a second coat. Repeat one more time and you will have a super finish with better protection than parrafin wax alone which has little to recommend it other than price. All waxes will darken a natural fiish even if sightly. The best traditional finish imho is acieved using blended finishing oils (boiled linseed with a little walnut and tung oil, and a little turpentine to thin) to 4 or 5 coats left for about a week then apply a high quality carnuaba and beeswax paste such as Antique Wax or Liberon Black Bison wax. It leaves a glass like, almost French polish finish but with much better protection. I'm a professional cabinet maker by way of qualification for these remarks.
