Just today I had planned to go through GC-602 after a nice day at the aquapark. I had absolutely no idea what the road was like, especially considering that it has a legitimate state number. Just before the dam wall I started googling what was I up to... Now I regret that I didn't go after the wall. I was with a VW Polo rentacar... Do you think I would've made it? 😅
Well that's the same car I did it with. I would guess that that road doesn't get much maintenance so you probably would have struggled, but you never know until you've tried 😄
Sorry but I think you need to invest in a stabiliser for your filming as the rocking side to side was quite off putting, otherwise would have been useful to watch this walk
I appreciate your honest opinion. I had the camera on a chest harness. It has built in stabiliser but it's probably my wagging walk that makes it rocking from side to side 😄 I've done some more that is still waiting to be edited but I will consider in the future maybe using a camera stick instead of the harness.
I had tried this with a Renault Twingo prior to this visit, and couldn't make it. This time I had a Renault Clio. I don't remember the exact model other than a petrol engine, but probably just a standard engine for that type of car.
Hi, you managed very well and calm. I just drove up today there same way, the most stressful drive up ever :) I don’t know why navigation shows that direction, however there is longer but much easier road to up to the mountain. I drove down that longer way.

Hi, and thank you for the comment 😊 I've tried both the smallest and the second smallest category of rental cars. The smallest couldn't make it up the steepest roads and as the video shows the second smallest had some struggle to make it. It's not so much about the size of the car, but what type of engine and how the transmission is configured. In my experience the smaller Renault's doesn't have a suitable transmission range for steep roads so I would not recommend one of those if you plan to go on the really steep roads. But other than that I would suggest consulting a couple of rental companies first to see how their suggestions range and then book something in between 😉 Good luck and safe driving!
Your driving videos show a side to Madeira that few tourists will ever see, and also capture many parts of the island as it is now, so they are a valuable historical record. How cool is that !
So the hike there and back was a little over 2 hours ? What was the total distance ? Great video by the way. I’m considering doing PR1.2 because I’m not sure I can handle the full PR1
Thanks! Yes I did it in a bit over 2 hours, and I'm not in the best shape. It's just over 8 kilometers total (there and back). It's a lot easier than the full PR1. That took me about 7-8 hours there and back.
Brilliant video, it answered all my questions. I watched from start to finish. I'll be a 53 year old fat bloke in July when I attempt this and if all goes well I'll start off in the afternoon and come down in the early hours of the next day and IF I make it there will be a bare arsed nekid selfie of me on the Pico Ruivo under the milky way!😂 Cant wait until July 🤞
I was thinking about doing this walk but it sounded like you were a bit out of breath and not sure now if I would be fit enough. I`m 73 years old and can easily do 4 or 5 miles on flat but this looks quite steep.
Nu är det några år sen, men jag har bl.a anlitat Guerin och varit jättenöjd. Snabbt, professionellt och inga problem. Ok pris, men det här var innan pandemin och nu tror jag priserna stigit kraftigt.
It is a long video so it's easy to miss some parts 🙂 The challenges are starting at 54:15 with the worst part from 1:06:30. I guess you had to be there to experience the sharp rocks with risks of puncturing the tires, the rolling rocks when driving over them and the uneven surfaces with risks of getting the chassis stuck. Maybe it didn't seem to be so challenging because of my excellent (and modest) driving skills ;-)
Thanks! I need to use non licensed music when publishing the videos and i just pick some random tunes from RU-vid's free library. Maybe in the future I will take more time selecting tunes... Or maybe not 😉😀
tip: don't follow GPS car directions at Madeira. They usually make you do some crazy course and not the easier and best one. It would be much better if you went forward at 12:57.
Yeah, i agree the GPS isnt always reliable on Madeira, but sometimes it gets me on an interesting and exiting road i wouldn't get to experience by taking the safe route 😉

I used also GoPro 4 and 6 for my videos, but behind the windscreen they both stopped by heat approximately after 60 till 90 minutes and I therefore stopped GoPro using for my videos, becauce the times are to short!
