I remember watching this when it first aired. Award shows were always super sophisticated. Everyone was dressed to the nines, and everything about it was glamorous... And then this happened. We thought it was a joke or something must have gone very wrong. It was confusing. There's normally an opening dance number and introduction of stars, etc. But the snow white thing was too juvenile and silly.
The best thing to say about this is that there weren’t mistakes. I think everyone worked hard to give Alan Carr the production he designed. But it’s really bad. It’s just a poorly conceived flop of a production. The Snow White character is insufferable - but to be fair the animated SW’s voice is pretty bad, too. Also, nothing was catchy. There isn’t a single musical element that rises above the level of mediocre. And the humor they were going for in the lyrics is especially strained. And then Rob Lowe can’t sing. He was pretty hot back then, so I can see why they wanted to use him, but they should play to his strengths or get someone who is musically inclined. What an embarrassment.
I've had the Displeasure of having him as a dinner guest. I had to leave the table and pace in the kitchen a few minutes in order to calm myself down before returning to my guests. Unfortunately Dinner lasted much longer than 11 minutes...
Oh man, I was 5 too and remember it when it debuted! I had thought Rob Lowe was. So cute, and Snow White was the only Disney movie I liked. I was Snow White for Halloween 1988. My five year-old-self mortified by this. Hand to God. 😂
Someone said to look this up because as a teenager she was outside taking pictures of the stars on the red carpet so here I am looking at this video. This video is all reminiscence of 1989. This was the last hurrah of the 80s. I thought something big had happened that made Rob Lowe mess up, but was nothing of the sort. It was the time that they were getting away from the big Hollywood shows of the Oscars. They didn't want what they were doing in the 50s 60s or 70s for the opening act. It wasn't classy anymore. I wasn't surprised by this at all. This is the way it was back then and I don't see why he was shunned, the one who made Grease, but that's how fickle Hollywood is. Imagine, if you were past the age of 60 sitting in the audience, you've probably passed away by now(2024). Soooo many great entertainers that aren't here anymore, the ones who when younger made Hollywood glamorous back in the 40's, 50' and 60's. That's when I loved watching the Oscars!!🥰🥰🌟🌟 Edited-Addition I wanted to mention that I would watch this any day over Will Smith's bomb that went off at the Oscars.
So she was terrible to work for he didn’t like her at all, but he wants her to get in touch with him if she’s ever in his new hometown? And he sends her a thank you card to let her know this? What a fake thing to do. The fact that she confronted him in front of everyone and he got down on the floor tells you everything… about HIM. NOT her lol.
Honestly, the Proud Mary; spoof wasn;t bad, it was actually cute and funny. They should have ended with that (without the stupid dancing tables) and this would have been OK, but they had to just go on and on and on...
Sure, not great. But after trying to tune in the last 5+ years to the various awards shows (including the music ones), there is a display of utter lack of talent and everyone goes along with nodding their heads about how great performances are. My point: we have changed the standards over time, and now accept total mediocrity as excellence. Long live Rob Lowe and Eileen Bowman who gave it their all and at least entertained us.
Years and Years talking about this opening number..... how excessive it was...., poor Allan Carr, ......poor Elleen Bowman.....but finally in 2022 Will Smitih came to give us the really really worst moment at the Oscars
Yeah, it's incredibly cringe-worthy; a total embarrassment. But you know---here we are, still watching it and talking about it 35 years later, when so many other Oscar telecasts are totally forgotten.
