The 11 minutes that ruined Hollywood producer Allan Carr's career forever

From over 30 years ago - This is the infamous opening song and dance number to the March 29, 1989 awards show, with Rob Lowe singing to Snow White, dancing tables and so much more. This bombed so badly that the show's producer, Allan Carr (who made the movie GREASE) found himself shunned by Hollywood, and spent the next decade in relative seclusion until his death from liver cancer in 1999.
Great article in Los Angeles Magazine: www.lamag.com/...
Carr's story is also told in the new documentary film The Fabulous Allan Carr, which is based on the excellent book Party Animals by Robert Hofler. Used paperback copies can be found at amazon for under ten bucks.
You may also want to check out the very interesting Hollywood Reporter article about actress Eileen Bowman's experience playing Snow White on this show. (Google her name and Hollywood Reporter). During rehearsals this opening number also featured the dancing Nicholas Brothers and an appearance by Mayim Biyalik, but both were cut before the ceremony's broadcast because the segment was running much too long.
One point of confusion that keeps appearing in the comments section here is people who think that Rob Lowe's sex tape scandal had already occurred when he did this telecast. It had not. The scandal broke approximately 6 weeks after this telecast, but since it occurred so close in time people remember them together. While the tape with the under-age girl was recorded July 17, 1988 in Atlanta, the public didn't learn about its existence until the girl's mother's attorney, J. Hue Henry, filed suit against Lowe on May 12, 1989. (This telecast was March 29, 1989.)
List of dancers according to a call sheet: Steve Merritt, D'Vaughn Pershing, Albie Berk, Eileen Bowman, Holly Vonk, Cheryl Baxter, Paula J. Belis, Pam Klinger, Tricia McFarlin, Edna R. Chew, Andrea Moen, Linda Sabatelli, Carla Earle, Christian Hanson, Debby Harris, Val Diamond, Shelly Werk, Lillian Colon, Barry Bernal, Tim Bond, Robert Brady, Tony Burrer, Steve Cooper, Ed Forsyth, Michael Fullington, David Giugni, Michael Higgins, Erik Hyler, Jim Kolb, Ken Miller, Felix Montano, Trish Ramish, Scott Musgrove, Regan Patno, Jamie Pisano, Nathan Prevost, Craig Raciawski, Gavin Ryan, Blane Savage, Christopher Solari, Todd Jenkins, Tina Bells, Tina Bradley, Karen Christenberry, Susan Conner, Carla Earie, Julie Morrical, Andrea Paris, Jody Peterson

It's a shame this link and background information had not been made available at the time That You released this video. It was an amazing summary o f what became a tragic event. While I was watching it I kept thinking this man was obviously not in his right mind. After reading about him and realizing how very eccentric he was it puts the pieces of the puzzle together and make sense of something that was nonsense. It's a shame that so many who watched this video and have commented here probably will not benefit from all of this added information. While typing this it came to me exactly what this reminds me of. It's very similar to the parodies of the large production numbers that Carol Burnett used to do on her show. Unfortunately there is no humor to be found here.

I'm a genuine, older Gen Xer, and I gotta say, this is friggin' bizarre even by 80's standards. If it wasn't for the giveaway of Rob Lowe, I would have totally guessed this as having been in the 70s -- all that disco-y dancing at the beginning? It looks dated, but not to the 80s! Alan Carr was clearly a bit too long in the tooth for the job. In other observations: Lily Thomlin HAS NOT AGED.

Just to clarify the timeline: The Democratic convention and Lowe's hotel room escapades had happened by this point, but the *scandal* hadn't. The release of the tape and all the coverage was not until the following summer ('89). That's when his career looked to be in serious trouble. With regard to the Snow White number, at the time he was just one of many people who took part in something embarrassing that didn't play out as planned. Carr is the only person whose career suffered (and maybe the young woman playing Snow White, who didn't get the big break she might have expected). I'd disagree that Lowe didn't do anything noteworthy for a long time post scandal. He rebounded pretty well. First there was his well-reviewed performance as the villain in Bad Influence (in which he and Spader played against their usual types). While promoting that film, he surprised a lot of people with a supple hosting turn on SNL, especially his Arsenio Hall parody and his good-natured response to a very topical grilling by the Church Lady. That may have led to Wayne's World, which was a huge hit. Not long after, he had a good part as Nick in The Stand. So he was showing some new sides, making the best of things. He clearly had good management, and maybe it was a more forgiving time. (For some.)

I was reading this chapter last night in "Oscar Wars". I was not aware of Allen Carr before. But this chapter gave me an immediate education. Somehow I do not think Snow White talking like she was on nitrous oxide would have been convincing on a good day. I guess the "Lowe" moment was her duet with Rob. It was more of a concoction that could have been attributed to Timothy Leary or ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters than a producer known for his innovation .I saw the Hollywood Stars shrinking from her as with a leper., which is what Allen Carr became after this disaster. This travesty really became his inglorious epitaph. but Hollywood is notoriously unforgiving.

If you watch the Emmy TV Legends interview with writer Bruce Vilanche, he explains what happened. Essentially most of the outrage was manufactured by the-then head of Disney Frank Wells who was angry that the production made use of Snow White who he thought was Disney copyright. Lawyers from the Academy, Disney and MGM vetted the costume and said it was ok as the Snow White character is actually in the public domain. At the time, the academy didn't allow studios to advertise during the awards show as it may look like they were endorsing them- but the Snow White character appeared in a Chevy commercial which happened to be filmed in front of her castle at Walt Disney World. Then the Rob Lowe sex tape happened afterwards and the rest is history.

After everyone saying how this was the worst Oscar moment of all time, my expectations were set pretty high, and I honestly don't think it's that bad. I think the campy cheesiness is intentional, and if the same exact performance was done by Neil Patrick Harris in the Tony awards today, people might say it was a little technically lackluster, but nobody would call it a massive embarrassment. Old Hollywood movies is very relevant to the Oscars, the two have always gone hand in hand, acknowledging and honoring both the past and the present. It did put a moratorium on splashy production numbers at the Oscars for a long while, though. Billy Crystal's openings whenever he hosted were spoofs of what went down on this night. For a while, unless they were performances of the nominated songs (which were not done this year, something winner Carly Simon expressed disappointment with in her acceptance speech), it seemed only numbers that poked fun at the glitz were allowed.

The entire opening was based on the San Francisco show Beach Blanket Babylon. Allan Carr was a huge fan of this show, so when he was asked to do the Oscars, he hired Steve Silver, the creator of BBB, to basically recreate his show as the opening of the Oscars. Beach Blanket Babylon involves Snow White looking for her prince, and on the way bumping into a lot of off-the wall characters, mostly culled from modern pop culture. It's all hip and amusing in a small club, but considerably less so when millions of people are watching it on television.

Like everyone else, I had my expectations pretty high for how bad this was. I thought something was gonna go wrong in the middle of the show. As I’m watching, I noticed that the staircase was closing back into one, and Eileen was behind it. For a minute I thought she got crushed and that’s what went wrong and what made the show a disaster. It is very cringy but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

Apart from this endless and painful effort, there was another lengthy musical segment meant to showcase "stars of tomorrow" (including Patrick Dempsey, Ricki Lake, Molly Ringwald, and Corey Parker--who was Dempsey's STEPFATHER ffs!). But one innovation Carr created still lingers today. He insisted that when the envelopes were opened, all presenters would no longer say "And the winner is ..." but, instead, they would say, "And the Oscar goes to ..."". This has been done in all subsequent Oscarcasts right up until this year. So Carr had influence beyond the debacle that was that evening.

Bruce Vilanch, who worked as a writer for the 1989 Oscars talked about for the Archive of American Television. He implied that the backlash against this opening number probably wouldn't have gotten as big as it had gotten had 1) The late Frank Wells, who at the time, was the president of The Walt Disney Company had not made a big stink over the usage of the Snow White character. Even though Snow White is within the public domain, Wells thought that the character as portrayed by Eileen Bowman shouldn't have been used without appropriation by Disney. 2) About two weeks after the show, Rob Lowe's sex tape surfaces. And his "disastrous" appearance with Snow White at the Oscars was the most recent point of reference that the media had. So you can already see right away, how it grew into something bigger and bigger. 3) At the time, the Academy wouldn't allow any current movies be advertised during the Oscars ceremony because they didn't want to imply an endorsement from the Academy. At the time, Disney was opening a theme mark in Florida. The Academy wouldn't allow them to have commercials. So they did an end-runaround and made a deal with Chevy for commercials that were shot at the Disney-MGM Studios. After the Snow White number ended, the first thing that you saw was Snow White's castle at the Disney studios with Snow White coming out of a Chevy. That according to Bruce Vilanch, was the real reason why Frank Wells was so incensed.

My understanding is that one of the biggest problems was that the use of Snow White's image was not authorized. I think the Academy had to trash the opening and Carr to distance themselves from it. My guess is that Carr's "banishment" was more about a legal than artistic breach. But as these things go, it was a fun, insane romp. Yeah, Lowe can't sing -- but I wasn't expecting him to. The very beginning of the opening was the most cringeworthy part, but the rest was silly fun. Not great, but not horrible.
@DynapubsA

Sort of but not really. It's far more complicated than that. You can find the whole complicated story in the Allan Carr biography that is titled Party Animals: A Hollywood Tale of Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll by Robert Hofler, available for $8.99 in paperback from amazon. It's an excellent book. Read chapters 26, 27 and 28 ("Snow Blight")
@jean-michelcotte5170
@jean-michelcotte5170 6 лет назад
Not the only problem. There was a very bad reception from almost everybody in Hollywood. There was a letter signed by 17 prominent stars who wrote the show was a disgrace to the Academy. It was very bad taste, the mix of old stars with the Coconut Grove and what was "Proud Mary" doing there?? It should have been more Broadway-ish.
@jean-michelcotte5170

This article proves the Snow White copyright was not the only problem! Hollywood did not like it and eveybody turned its back at Alan Carr right after the show. There was a real embarrassment because of the campish, bad taste and amateurish mix. www.lamag.com/longform/snow-job/

I worked for Allan Carr, crazy, wild, over the top guy. I strongly believe this wasn't nearly as bad as first perceived. Find me more than a few well received Oscar telecasts EVER. The problem back in 1989 was that many long time Oscar voters despised Allan being given the gig to begin with. They knew he was a splashy, big is never enough guy. Allan didn't disappoint.
