Beautiful and wonderful instrumentalists, who seem to love this greatest of singers, interpreters, baritonos too. But I always want the extra mike on our great Peter Mattei. Again, bravo to all concerned and to the young conductor..Ok back to work...! Wonder if he's open to original compositions...hmmm....
This is such a wonderful performance of this Brahms masterpiece. Christoph Eschenbach communicated with the choir so well. The baritone, Peter Mattei, was so powerful, one of the best i have ever heard. Bravo to everyone involved in this great musical undertaking.
Listening again, what an amazing and unique interpretation of that great "ich habe genug..." Mattei is always such a generous performer, always showing appreciation for his fellow musicians and singers...a Tour de Force!!! <3
I watched the live transmission from Berwaldhallen and was highly delighted by that really witty adaptation to the then more (or less in Sweden - good for them!) paranoid ongoings in most countries. I always loved Don Giovanni, even in music-theatrical SLIGHTLY (not entirely) distorted versions. But this staging really won my heart during the difficult pandemic time and I still greatly enjoy watching it time and again. Thank you to all marvelous participants and especially to Andrew Staples. I think, Mozart with his sense of humour, also would have loved that one🤩.
Für alle Mahler Fans und Versteher sind diese Lieder ein Schlüssel auch zu seinen Symphonien. Schön sie so hervorragend nachempfunden interpretiert zu hören. Danke!
Peter Mattei beautiful as usual...but, as with his "Grosser Herr" - exquisite, it's a strain to listen through amplified high frequency orchestral - wind notes. Where Peter Mattei is concerned, every voice and instrument must be pianissimo...so that we may fully hear the ethereal beauty of the amazing range of Peter's voice. Shout out to Stephen McLeod whose "ich habe genug" is also outstandingly beautiful, but different. I can never "habe genug" of the Mattei voice - must have been kissed by an angel when he was born!
@@user-ej1en7ig8s Спасибо! Я думаю, что ангелы перестают петь, чтобы послушать его. Его «Зимний путь»... не от мира сего... Такой пронзительный, такой выразительный.
What a perfect concert! Peter Mattei’s vocal quality is mesmerizing, with no distractions from Mahler’s text and mood. If this were on CD, it would be my top desert island pick.
Sweden should give him a Nobel for Interpretive Genius, and Italy, 24k gold laurels! Winterreise is still my favorite - so compelling, such emotional depth. Always "dangerous" to listen to when I have a shedload of work to complete...one of these days/years I'd looove to compose a Lieder for Peter Mattei...
"World class" is almost too "trite" to describe Mattei! No offense intended, @Situnadei, but in my not so humble opinion, it's Heavenly! Celestiale! He is such a GENEROUS performer, each role is completely different, so rich, so deep, and even though Mahler is too atonal for my unsophisticated ear, Mattei brings out a beauty in the emotive substrate that fascinates and compels me to listen. I found him only lately.
Mattei, one of the great voices of all time, in one of the most haunting song cycles. Many will disagree, but I think you have to have children, as Mattei does (and so did Christa Ludwig), to truly understand this piece. Same with Schubert’s Erlkoenig.
it's not just beautiful singing, it is touching and meaningful (and without histrionics also). amongst baritones I think only Hermann Prey, the young Thomas Hampson and the young Fischer Dieskau are comparable to this. this is the most devastating performance of the second of the songs that i've ever heard.
Wow. Way too much singing and way too little story. If I didn't know the text, I could imagine he was singing the shopping list. Compare DFD and Maazel.
Amazing performance - those musicians giving all they can give in front of empty seats !!! Just for us. This pandemic has made many odd things possible. Peter Mattei is just the best and nothing can stop him from singing.
Thank you for posting this wonderful performance that we in South Africa can also enjoy this musical experience while we are lockdown from life concerts.
