What a perfect concert! Peter Mattei’s vocal quality is mesmerizing, with no distractions from Mahler’s text and mood. If this were on CD, it would be my top desert island pick.
Sweden should give him a Nobel for Interpretive Genius, and Italy, 24k gold laurels! Winterreise is still my favorite - so compelling, such emotional depth. Always "dangerous" to listen to when I have a shedload of work to complete...one of these days/years I'd looove to compose a Lieder for Peter Mattei...
it's not just beautiful singing, it is touching and meaningful (and without histrionics also). amongst baritones I think only Hermann Prey, the young Thomas Hampson and the young Fischer Dieskau are comparable to this. this is the most devastating performance of the second of the songs that i've ever heard.
Thank you for posting this wonderful performance that we in South Africa can also enjoy this musical experience while we are lockdown from life concerts.
Mattei, one of the great voices of all time, in one of the most haunting song cycles. Many will disagree, but I think you have to have children, as Mattei does (and so did Christa Ludwig), to truly understand this piece. Same with Schubert’s Erlkoenig.
"World class" is almost too "trite" to describe Mattei! No offense intended, @Situnadei, but in my not so humble opinion, it's Heavenly! Celestiale! He is such a GENEROUS performer, each role is completely different, so rich, so deep, and even though Mahler is too atonal for my unsophisticated ear, Mattei brings out a beauty in the emotive substrate that fascinates and compels me to listen. I found him only lately.
Wow. Way too much singing and way too little story. If I didn't know the text, I could imagine he was singing the shopping list. Compare DFD and Maazel.
