Thanks for stopping by my page. My videos range from my own music, instrumental/theory instruction, gear comparisons and covers. I also have a page with my band's music at Birds Over Arkansas.

Lollar 52 by some distance to my ears. On Alnico 2 vs. Alnico 5 I have always preferred Alnico 2 be they single coil or humbucker.

Please tell me, how are you running the Dream with the volume and output that high and getting such a clean, not crackly sound? To maintain any sort of clean sound, I have to put the volume at 0 and output as low as possible. And still a lot of crackle.

It’s been a while since I had the pedal, but I was re-amping from logic in this video, BUT, I was consistently able to get this pedal to be clean plugged straight from the guitar with very reasonable controls. The bass and treble have to be cut quite a bit. I think one of the preamp settings was helpful as well.

I've listened to quite a few of these comparisons and the difference is usually quite subtle. But here the roasted maple seemed to me to be giving a much flatter frequency response where the rosewood seemed to emphasize the low mid range to the point of being "boomy". I didn't like it at all. It was so unusual i wondered if maybe one of the knobs had got bumped.

Any updates on this issue? It only comes from the amp models, not the fx or the amp itself. Very frustrating indeed

Brilliant review. Really appreciate it. I’ve had a MIJ Tele with lollar royal pickup in neck and bridge sitting in my reverb watch list for a week and been looking for some sound comparisons. Getting some great Paul Simon Graceland vibes in there.

I believe the difference is in the frets and how they connect with the wood. The frets in a rosewood will be a little "looser" vs any hardwood as the rosewood is a lot softer. This would tend to made the sound from a rosewood neck a little softer or "less bright". The type of frets would also tend to affect the sound a little. In the end the difference is going to be small and adjustment can be made at the amp to compensate. Quiter frankly I think the amp makes a much bigger difference than the wood or even the pickups. I've tested a Brad Paisely Telecaster back to back on a Prineton, Deluxe Reverb, and a Super Champ x2 and there is a noticeable difference in sound. After that I quit worrying about what type of wood the neck or the body is made of because the sound is a combination of guitar and amp with the amp the biggest game changer.

I like my squire pu's I'm upgrading the pots to 500, switch Oaks Gribsby and guitars jack. I'm trying to identify the existing wire colors both pu's have a black and white wire cut off and taped together, (Coil splitting) what appears to be the hot wire when I pull the plastic back there's actually two wires in there? Why two? Then there a ground. Anyway can someone explain the color codes?

on your rig: i'd go standard bridge w/50s neck. Nice and greasy on the bridge w/clarity at the neck. if you forced me to pick only one, i'd go 50s wind on both.

Funny. It's like Paul loves single coils and hates them. Most PRS buckers I've played outside the Santanas have a slight single coil like snap compared to other brands. The Lollers a bit softer more Gib PAF sounding to me. 58/15s in this guitar for sure but I love the Lollers in the Eastman SB58tv. But Eastmans Lollars are custom wound for their guitars apparently. Great stuff.

Im from the philippines and we have a local guitar brand that has wide range humbucker pickups. They said they are alnico 5 and also has coil split but on my research cunife are the original wide range humbuckers but there are also alnico 2 wide range pickups. Can alnico 5 used for wide range pickups and can they be coil split? Thanks!

@@haskitt I'm going to roll the dice on the SDuncan custom shop t-bar P90 in an Esquire, found a great bargain. (Must say tho I'm very tempted by the SD BG1400, a very different animal all together, definitely would make an Esquire a b9na fide fire breather. Maybe I need another Esquire...)

I’ve watched this video far more than I probably should. 😂 Great comparison! I’ve concluded a few things. I like the vintage the least, seemed to get lost the easiest to my ear and I’m not sure if the increased midrange messed up a bit of clarity. I wonder how this pickup would sound under wound a bit. The Alnico 3 was really cool, by far cut through the mix the best, and the mids had this compressed hyperactive sound that was a double edged sword. Overdriven and fingerpicked it sounded great. Instant Jim Campilongo tone. Regular clean though it sounded a bit too aggressive and was a bit too much. The 52T sat in the happy medium for me between the two. Cleans sounded better than both, overdriven it sounded more aggressive and edgier than the Vintage. It didn’t cut as well as the A3 but it sounded more open and cut plenty well enough.

What a great video! I was in between Lollar Imperial and Arcane Triple Clone (maybe Triple 8 in the bridge) for my Les Paul Custom in mid/high gain applications. I think Arcane's would be better choice. Do you have any other experience with Arcane pickups?

Absolutely amazing comparison, Scott. The best I've found comparing the Dream to an actual Deluxe Reverb (albeit reissue!) - Question, from a fellow Dream owner. I'm noticing throughout the vid that you have the volume (and output) set pretty high, at noon and above and I don't quite understand how you're keeping a clean tone on the Dream. Are the volume knobs on your guitars significantly rolled back through the vid? Or how are you recording the Dream exactly? When I do Dream into a DI out to my UAD Apollo Twin, from 9 o'clock up I'm already getting some pretty noticeable break up. Thanks in advance for your input!

I know little about drum kits. Can anyone explain why he appears to need no foot bass drum action? Is it because it is electric?
@haskitt
@haskitt Месяц назад
In the beginning I’m mostly doing hands, but the feet become more active as the track builds. Left foot starts playing steady quarter notes about a minute or so in, and the right foot gradually becomes more active until 2:30 or so when you can really see it get much more involved. Cheers!

Ever get a chance to try the Fender Wide Range pickups from a Starcaster? It's not MIM, Squier, or Vintera, and also isn't CuNiFe. When I got my Starcaster I was all set to replace the pickups right away. I did a bunch of research and had replacements picked out and everything. When I got the guitar home and plugged it in I was shocked that they actually sounded pretty good. The low e seemed a bit weak on volume but they weren't muddy and after some tweaking with the pickup height and lowering the treble side I think they sound great and no longer have plans to replace them. Would you ever do a follow up to see if the Starcaster WRHB's are much different from the other non-CuNiFes?

i got a pair of telenator's in my tele and it's difficult to balance the pickups. If bridge is good than there's much low end in middle or neck, if bottom end is good in neck it usually gets harsh in bridge too.

Great tip. Have you maybe made a video showing the mod in more detail? Thanks for sharing, amazing you found this. I did go to the link you provided, thanks, I am wondering if the audio input via this method combines with the amp speaker signal at the audio output or the optical out, might make for an interesting practice with a jam track or something of the sort.

Where was this one made? What year also. I have a Korean made one, the neck p.u. is very bassy .it sounds like the tone control is all the way rolled back. Can be adjusted by lowering it? Any feedback you can would be greatly appreciated. '

This one was made in Korea, I believe it was a 2016? These are Curtis Novak franz P90s. I swapped them in for the originals. It would definitely help if you lowered the neck pick up, but in order to do that you have to chisel or otherwise remove wood from where the pick up sets. There’s no easy way to do it! I had to lower the franz Novaks. Imo the neck pickup is just too high. If you other lions love the guitar just do it, it really makes a big difference! Good luck

Thanks for doing this. I use both a ton but Neve did an A/B test with fresh strings. But any time I would have been using DR for a long time and switched to Broadways I would always immediately think “more open HiFi”. But I generally like aged strings. So now I can choose between them “intelligently”

Scott, Have you kept any of these pickups? If so, I'd be curious to hear your opinion now that you've had a chance to live with them for a while. I'm particularly interested in the comparison between the Staple Neck and the Alnico Pole Neck. Surprised in this comparison that the Staple seemed to have an even more flowing, easy 'Strat-like' tone than the Alnico Pole. But maybe it's different in person?
