@ the Band Recording RU-vid channel I am documenting and sharing my experiences as a sound engineer with you.
For now you can watch me unboxing and reviewing the Tannoy Gold 8 studio monitors, as well as unboxing and presenting some of the microphones I own.
⭐ Currently I am working on a full review of each microphone I unboxed on my channel until now.
I am planing to make a video comparing the microphones of a similar type with each other as well.
My ultimate goal is to turn this channel into a source of information and knowledge about studio equipment, recording, mixing and mastering.
Everything you might need to know in order to record yourself or a band using mainly acoustic and amplified instruments in a hybrid (digital-analog) studio environment.
❤️ Subscribe, like and comment! I gladly respond to your questions.
I am looking forward to your constructive feedback.
Thank you for visiting the Band Recording RU-vid channel!
Hey, thank you for watching. Well the tweeter does collect some dust over time, no doubt. Yet it is not more than the surrounding environment. I do clean it once every few months with a dust brush.
I agree with your point of view on almost(*) everything. The fact that the tweeter is at the center of the midrange separates each instrument. For the price, I find them stunning. Ultra clean bass, no distortion even at high volume. Given the competition it could cost almost twice their prices * I will just put a small flat on the use of a subwoofer which is in my opinion not useful for "homestudio" use
Thank you for the vid, this has been helpful. I just bought sm57 and I got worried it was made in China I thought I got a counterfeit coz I have a shure sm58 but its made in Mexico but I checked the links you shared to spot the fake sm57 and I am relieved that I have the real deal even if its made in China.
Please help me figure it out. It is stated that 2 audio sources can be connected to the Gold series monitors simultaneously. Are we talking about simultaneous connection ONLY to balanced inputs? Or can XLR and AUX be connected at the same time? (for example, audio interface and vinyl player)
Hey thx for the comment and sorry my late response. It's a DIY desk made of parts from different origins. The telescopic legs and the top shelve are from IKEA. The table top I got from a local a second hand platform. The legs for the top shelve are actually kitchen legs which I got from the hardware store including a bunch of screws to put it all together.
The best place for any speakers may not be 0.5m from the wall. Acoustics Insider's Bass Finder technique will teach you where to place your listening position (where bass is most even and controlled) and then the speakers are placed in relation to that monitoring position using his Phantom Speaker technique.
Hey thank you for watching and thank you for the comment. So the desk is a DIY consisting of parts from different origin. The (telescopic) legs of the desk as well as the top shelf are from Ikea, I got them basically for free over our local second hand platform. That's where I also got the table top wich I don't know exactly where it's from. It costed me about €50. The legs of the shelve are 10cm high kitchen legs, which I got from the local construction store. So the top shelf is just standing on top of the desk. For better overall stability I used metal brackets to screw the table top to the wall behind, this way it doesn't wobble. The (studio) monitors are heavy enough (14kg each!) to keep the top shelf in place. All in all I spend on this desk approximately €80 including all the screws. Hope that helps and inspires you to build your own studio desk. All the best! :D
@@band_recording Hey mate thank you so much for this detailed reply, appreciate the time you've taken to help me! I bought just yesterday a desk from Ikea as well. It's a gaming desk though so hmm I'm not sure if I can do the same DIY with it... I'll have to do some research! If it's possible to DIY with the gaming desk then I'll revisit your comment and try to replicate the construction method 😊 thanks mate have a great day
Hey friend, thank you so much for your kind comment! You just gave me a lot of motivation to push my RU-vid channel forward. Thank you and all the best to you! Cheers. :D
Hey thx for watching. I honestly didn't see any counterfeit versions of the box with the green Shure logo yet. But I think it's better to look at the sticker with the model name and serial number on the side of the white box anyway.
Nice videos man. I'm really curious about your display setup. I was trying portrait orientation as well, but it didn't work that well, now I realize that with three screens, that would be quite different then with two. I would really like to hear and see a video from you on that topic. 3:48 / 4:11 / 4:48
Thank you for watching. I am happy you appreciate the video! I must admit I changed my display setup back to two displays: one in panoramic mode for the DAW's arrange window and one in portrait mode for the mixer and plugins like the VU-meter and the spectrum analyzer.
Hey, tanks for watching! I am happy you like the video. To answer your question I would say these speakers are absolutely fine for casual music listening. Yet if you are used to HiFi-speakers (which pleasantly color the sound), they might sound a bit falt in comparison. So I it depends on what you are usually listening to your music to. Hope that helps, all the best & stay safe! :D
Hey, thx for watching. No it doesn't have Made in China written on the mic at the XLR connector. It is written on the silver sticker on the box (next to the SHURE logo) in which the mic comes packaged in.
Hello, thank you for your video. Maybe a stupid question but is it possible to use the Tannoy 8 as Hifi speaker for living room (40m2) ? and eventually plug a TV ? Do i need a pre-ampli or other ? Thank you in advance.
Hey Nicolas, thank you for watching the video! It's not a stupid question at all. I would say definitely yes. Although these are no Hifi speakers, you absolutely can use them in your living room for listening to records and watching TV. That is how I use them as well. The speakers are active, so they do have their own amp built in. Yet I would recommend to use them with a pre-amp or audio-interface in order to drive them properly. All the best! :D
@@nicoschlosser I am currently using the TASCAM 208i with my TANNOY Gold 8 and I am pretty satisfied so far. The cool thing about this interface is that you can use it as a stand alone preamp and you don't have to turn on your computer every time you want to use it. But it really depends on your individual setup and what you want to use it with. Nowadays most interfaces and HiFi preamps are very decent and give a similarly good sound quality. So it really depends on what connectivity you need for your setup. Hope that helps! ;)
Hi, thank you for this video, do you still like these ? Long story short I was looking for my first pair of monitors, and saw you still replied to comments. I've looked at a few alternatives only to find out that lots of monitors around or under 300 bucks a pair seemed to have little to no quality control (Hi Mackie and JBL), but didn't find a lot of feedback about the Tannoy Gold serie, should I pray a little that nothing goes wrong if I decide to purchase the Tannoy Gold 5 ?
Hey Vuri, thank you for your comment. I must say I still appreciate my Tannoy Gold 8 a lot. I would not recommend getting Mackie or JBL Monitors. I listened to them and they are not good enough even for semiprofessional music-production in my opinion. I would say get the Tannoy Gold 5 an try them out for yourself. And if you aren't satisfied you can still send them back. That's the thing with speakers: You have to try them in your own environment and your own music, before you can really tell if they work for you or not. It's always an exciting journey. I wish you all the best! :D
@@band_recording Thanks for your reply ! I'm glad to hear that, to be honest my goal isn't music production I was just looking for speakers with a nice sound definition, knowing that they indeed would be sitting close to a wall... So yeah Mackie and JBL wouldn't even have worked in this situation, plus they seem to die after a few months which is just a deal breaker. While I know Tannoys aren't supposed to be "fun" monitors I was still pretty impressed at how full they seemed to sound in a room. They seem to be what I'm looking for and I'm glad to hear yours didn't break down after 1 year... Might order a pair in a few days or weeks, if I do so I'll try to give a little update
Cool, thank you for watching and for your feedback. I appreciate it! I'll keep that in mind and try to loosen up a bit in my next videos. Take care! ;)
I really wanted these, then I heard those words ‘made in China’. I’ve had enough gifts from China this last year, got the t-shirt, still wearing the mask. Tannoy can keep these.
Anyone here have any of the new Tannoy Golds crap out? I went to mix the other day as usual, and came to find one of the speakers just totally died. The power would still come on, but no sound. Sweetwater def is awesome and are replacing it, but just curious if anyone else has had this yet? Im gunna give them one more chance just because I got them for so cheap and they are just nice to have even though Ive got other good monitors. Also just some food for thought, its probably good to turn these off each night or use the sleep mode because im guessing mine crapped out due to overheating(cheap components)or a blown fuse.
Hey, sorry to hear your speaker died. I didn't have any issues until now. I also use the sleeping mode form time to time. But I turn them off every time I am done with using them. Did you let them powered on for 24/7?
Hey, thank you for watching. Yeah these monitors are quite big. But I must say I got used to their size within a week. The brand exists already since 1926! :)
@@band_recording yup, I didn’t know the brand but glad a found it (I play games I am not musically inclined unfortunately). I’ve always used headphones (dt 1990 pro) but I have an interface and thinking of getting a speaker, might go with the gold 5. Monitors should be fine for games right? (Might add a sub in the near future)
@@Cons2911 Yes the Tannoy Gold 5 will be absolutely enough for gaming or watching movies or listening to music. I am sure you will be a nice upgrade, especially since you own an interface already. Good luck with your setup! :)
@@band_recording yes that’s what I was thinking. I actually checked a few passive yesterday (b&w 607) but it’s more expensive and will require me to use my receiver. But, just realized that using a sub with monitor is a bit different , and I don’t think my sub has balanced in out though, need to check
If you can't afford this microphone I would recommend searching for a cheaper alternative, or simply buy it second hand, like I did, for literally half the price. Hope that helps! ;)
There are multiple online platforms, where people offer their unused studio equipment. I am sure you will find something inexpensive that will work for you. Good luck! 👍

Hey, yes this is an original Shure SM57 that I purchased at Thomann. As I researched that the SM57s are nowadays being manufactured in China and Mexico. The one I am unboxing in this video is made in China.
Yes, absolutely. I have my Stage Piano hooked to them and it sounds great. You can simply use the Line Output of your Keyboard / Piano / Synth and plug it directly into the speakers using a TS cable. :D
@@band_recording thanks for that.. I've been using a powered pa speaker... But really wanted to setup at home neatly, without losing the performance bang.. Having never owned monitors, the whole boring, true sound, uncoloured spiel has scared me off buying.. 🙂
@@Luca84v If you are playing back music form a digital source the DAC will be usually happening inside the source device. So if you playback your music form a phone, a computer or an audio interface the Digital to Analog Conversion is happening inside the phone or the computer or the interface. So the signal at the outputs is already Analog. This analog signal travels via (analog) audio cables to your active studio monitors which then amplify it and play it back. I recommend using some kind of Audio Interface if you are planing to play your music back from the computer. But you can also connect them directly to an analog mixing console, then you don't need any DAC. Hope that makes sens. ;)
@@band_recording Hi, yes absolutely, i was just asking because they probably need a better dac then the one that is inside the laptop that's why i was asking...thanks
Hey, I didn't recognize any hiss noise with my Tannoy Gold 8. It might depend on the audio source and the type of audio connection you are using. I recommend using a proper audio interface or a mixer and high quality cables with balanced XLR or TRS connectors. All the best! :D
Thats probably the old monitors and like band recording said the cables could be a factor, just for reference Mike Dean uses tannoy 215`s and probably doesnt have a hissing problem. Its just the person.
Hey which amp with a Bluetooth receiver would you suggest with these speakers? and would you recommend them for daily usage ( music movies ) etc or would you suggest another pair of speakers at the same price range?
Hey, I recommend getting an amp that has a balanced XLR or TRS output and high quality cables to connect the speakers. The Tannoy Gold 8 are absolutely working for me for daily use. Apart form listening to music I also use them for movies and games. ;)
Hey, thank you so much for your kind words! I am happy you like the review and my style of getting to the point. I was totally thinking of doing some mixing tutorials. Your comment just gave me a boost of motivation! Thank you BONNEMA music. Kind regards and have a lovely day. :D
I actually heard these up against Yamaha hs 8 and I would take the tannoys over them. There’s a RU-vid channel where they test all brands of monitors and do shoot outs with a/b comparisons and what the original track sounds like and these tannoy golds are special and at a special price. They sound great even the bass is all there even from what my ears can here. I just don’t know if I want the 8’s or the 6.5’s because of my room size. I have listened to so many monitors on that channel and it took over a year until I said these are the ones and they actually test some pretty high end models.
Hey, thx for your comment. I also listened to the Yamaha HS8 before buying the Tannoy GOLD8 and I didn't like how the Yamaha sound. Too unbalanced for my taste and the type of music I mix (Rock, Hard Rock, Metal). What music do you want to listen/mix with the Tannoy?
@@fein7068 Hey, thx for the comment. I didn't noticed any noise form my speakers. What type of noise are people complaining about: hiss, ruble, distortion? Let me know, so I can test more specifically and let you know what I hear. ;)
@@fein7068 Ok, so the speakers do have a very quiet sizzle even if the input volume control on the front panel is turned all the way down to -24dB. So if you are in an absolutely quiet and acoustically treated room (with no computer fan running) you will notice it.
