@edysixth Hi there , I do believe that these "Tannoy" ( Behringer... ) speakers have nothing to do with the REAL TANNOY's made in the UK , the ones that have the "Omega" symbol turned upside-down instead of a simple "O" ... Unfortunately, Tannoy is no longer british Tannoy... It's Behringer hidden under a big name... :( These new speakers doesn't even sound like their older brothers made in the '90 s... It's Behringer ... Truly sad what money can do... ! For example , AKG is no longer AKG, it's Samsung... Yuck ! Just like Tannoy, who is Behringer... Only the design is copied from real Tannoy's ... :(

@edysixth Yup, unfortunately... :( If you want to hear great , genuine british Tannoy monitor speakers, search the ones that have the Omega symbol turned upside-down on the "o" from the logo... ;) You'll hear the true Tannoy sound then, not Behringer...

Thank you for the review. I would like to mention 2 possible issues: Port noise(turbulance),overtone distortion in the frequency range. Port noise could come from the blocked port on the front. The frequency response has 300,500,1000,2000,... Dips,so this means if you have an instrument covering this frequency range can sound a bit different.

Hey, tanks for watching! I am happy you like the video. To answer your question I would say these speakers are absolutely fine for casual music listening. Yet if you are used to HiFi-speakers (which pleasantly color the sound), they might sound a bit falt in comparison. So I it depends on what you are usually listening to your music to. I agree with your point of view on almost(*) everything. The fact that the tweeter is at the center of the midrange separates each instrument. For the price, I find them stunning. Ultra clean bass, no distortion even at high volume. Given the competition it could cost almost twice their prices * I will just put a small flat on the use of a subwoofer which is in my opinion not useful for "homestudio" use

The best place for any speakers may not be 0.5m from the wall. Acoustics Insider's Bass Finder technique will teach you where to place your listening position (where bass is most even and controlled) and then the speakers are placed in relation to that monitoring position using his Phantom Speaker technique.

Fantastic looking speakers with a beautiful sound. I recently tried a pair of these and they sound fantastic (better than their price). The bass response is nice but you "hear" the bass more than you feel it. It's very pleasant to listen to, but different to a 12" woofer which shakes everything.

I've got the reveal 4, 5 and 8 inch monitors and they have a nice flat/dry sound which I love. Thinking of these for mixing, replacing my 502's. I use the 802 for piano. This is the only 'real world' review I've seen so thanks for posting it...At last, the volume is on the front but if only the power switch was too but I suppose a port and power transformer could not fit at the front!
@kyronhatfield1168
@kyronhatfield1168 4 года назад
I'd imagine it took as much, if not more time to design for the front panel controls on the monitor. I don't think a power switch needs to be soldered directly to the mains PCB or wired inline with the mains input; it can be a low voltage control signal, safe to wire to the control panel, and importanly- nice and quiet (electrically) ;) I would think they were faced with this option during the design phase, but maybe they introduced the standby function as a compromise

Hey! Would you recommend these for mixing rock? I’m really considering these, but would love to hear what you think? Basically my situation is that I’m saving up for some really nice monitors, but in the meantime I’m trying to find a couple pairs in the mid level range that I can work professionally on. I just upgraded from my first pair , to Focals which sound pretty great but they are very hard to adjust to , so I’m looking for a second pair that’s higher quality than my first pair. I will still keep my first ones for awhile just to check on them here and there. But anyway, ya, just curious on if you think these would be a good call for mixing rock/ hard rock etc?

Thanks dude!! Appreciate the feedback! Just got mine yesterday, and so far I really like them. I obv need to do some mixes and take some time to really see how I get on with them , but they seem to be a great compliment to my Focals which are 6.5” woofers and super Hifi and bright. I spent all night listening to music on Tidal . They seem maybe a tad bit scooped in the low mids, but other than that they seem really nicely balanced, and I especially like how vocals sound on them.( very nice diction and clarity). I also find the separation very nice, and they have a nice depth to them as well! Hey are you on Instagram?

I belive it is for the AUX jack, so you do not have to connect the source to both speakers, just use the monitor link.
@band_recording
@band_recording 4 года назад
If you are using the 3.5mm stereo jack cable to feed the audio signal into one monitor, you need the link to feed the signal from that monitor into a second one. Then you adjust the which monitor is the left and the right one with the selector switch.

Hi, thank you for this video, do you still like these ? Long story short I was looking for my first pair of monitors, and saw you still replied to comments. I've looked at a few alternatives only to find out that lots of monitors around or under 300 bucks a pair seemed to have little to no quality control (Hi Mackie and JBL), but didn't find a lot of feedback about the Tannoy Gold serie, should I pray a little that nothing goes wrong if I decide to purchase the Tannoy Gold 5 ?
@band_recording
@band_recording 2 года назад
Hey Vuri, thank you for your comment. I must say I still appreciate my Tannoy Gold 8 a lot. I would not recommend getting Mackie or JBL Monitors. I listened to them and they are not good enough even for semiprofessional music-production in my opinion. I would say get the Tannoy Gold 5 an try them out for yourself. And if you aren't satisfied you can still send them back. That's the thing with speakers: You have to try them in your own environment and your own music, before you can really tell if they work for you or not. It's always an exciting journey. I wish you all the best! :D

@@band_recording Thanks for your reply ! I'm glad to hear that, to be honest my goal isn't music production I was just looking for speakers with a nice sound definition, knowing that they indeed would be sitting close to a wall... So yeah Mackie and JBL wouldn't even have worked in this situation, plus they seem to die after a few months which is just a deal breaker. While I know Tannoys aren't supposed to be "fun" monitors I was still pretty impressed at how full they seemed to sound in a room. They seem to be what I'm looking for and I'm glad to hear yours didn't break down after 1 year... Might order a pair in a few days or weeks, if I do so I'll try to give a little update

Can you comment if you hear any compression above 12K that Andrei Piatra ask "On my 5'' Golds there's a metallic/distorting type of sound in the high frequency. It's like the tweeter is trying really hard to squeeze in information above 12k. Lowering the HF to -1db or -2db from the monitor doesn't seem to help. How is your experience on the 8's?" I would to know too. Thanks

Hey Kenneth, I did some testing focused on the 12kHz. I do not hear compression but it does sound metallic. Yet I believe that's the 12kHz sound. I didn't noticed any distortion. And I do hear an instant difference when turning down the HF-Trim to -1 or -2 dB.
@kennethz4466
@kennethz4466 4 года назад
@@band_recording Thank you so much for taking the time to test this out. I wonder what is causing this metallic sound? It is not cause by high volume, moving of the woofer or tweeter or the flat frequency. What a mystery to figure out. At least there is a solution.

@band_recording

Yes, you can connect one speaker using the AUX cable directly form your PC into the AUX Input of the speaker. Then connect the second speaker to the first one also using an AUX cable via the MONITOR LINK output of the first speaker into the AUX Input of the second speaker. Then you just need to set the SPEAKER POSITION switch to Left or Right accordingly to the speakers position. I tried this with my computer, but I was hearing quite some noise through this connection, which was caused by the AUX output of my PCs motherboard I believe, since these are usually cheap and low quality connectors.

Yes, that is what these speakers are designed for. But keep in mind that these are studio monitors for critical listening from an soundengineering point of view, not hi-fi speakers for audiophile applications. Meaning if you want to judge a mix they are great, if you want to listen to music for pleasure they might sound a bit too “flat” due to the linear frequency response. There’s a RU-vid channel where they test all brands of monitors and do shoot outs with a/b comparisons and what the original track sounds like and these tannoy golds are special and at a special price. They sound great even the bass is all there even from what my ears can here. I just don’t know if I want the 8’s or the 6.5’s because of my room size. Would they be good in a small livingroom? About 2-3 meters from the listener? Never owned studio monitors, only hifi speakers.
@band_recording
@band_recording 4 года назад
The thing with studio monitors is that they sound the best if you sit in the sweet spot between them, with the monitors pointing right at you. They should stand in an isosceles triangle with your listening position, then your listening experience will be very immersive. Since these are near field monitors, meaning they are developed for listening form a close range (when you are sting at a studio desk), the distance between the monitors and your ears should be about 1m. Listening form 2m or even 3m might loose the precision with which you are hearing the music. In this case Hi-Fi speakers are a better choice since they are designed for listening music in a living room from a bigger distance. Check out this video “Studio monitors VS. Audiophile speakers” by PS Audio: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JcbHJg5aFgQ.html Hope this helps you making the right decision.

Hey thank you for watching and thank you for the comment. So the desk is a DIY consisting of parts from different origin. The (telescopic) legs of the desk as well as the top shelf are from Ikea, I got them basically for free over our local second hand platform. That's where I also got the table top wich I don't know exactly where it's from. It costed me about €50. The legs of the shelve are 10cm high kitchen legs, which I got from the local construction store. So the top shelf is just standing on top of the desk. For better overall stability I used metal brackets to screw the table top to the wall behind, this way it doesn't wobble. The (studio) monitors are heavy enough (14kg each!) to keep the top shelf in place. All in all I spend on this desk approximately €80 including all the screws. Hope that helps and inspires you to build your own studio desk. All the best! :D

@@Luca84v If you are playing back music form a digital source the DAC will be usually happening inside the source device. So if you playback your music form a phone, a computer or an audio interface the Digital to Analog Conversion is happening inside the phone or the computer or the interface. So the signal at the outputs is already Analog. This analog signal travels via (analog) audio cables to your active studio monitors which then amplify it and play it back. I recommend using some kind of Audio Interface if you are planing to play your music back from the computer.
