I have the original 10v mini sheepdog without the flipper tap and it is one of the better performance knives I own. I own several K390 spyderco's all the 15v bbb sprint runs and all the 4v and rex 45 spyderco drops. I even got the 4v sheepdog after loving the 10v so much. I have sharpened it 3 times but right from the first sharpen 15 \/ angle a side I did it was a hard performer. I just cut through a piece of .75" extruded acrylic with it the other day with no issue not even a scratch on the polished edge.
I watched a video of someone who had cut cardboard with this for 6 hours. This is plenty knife for your average user who does nothing more than open packages, processes cardboard, or cuts some rope occasionally. I might buy one for curiosity sake. But that would be the only reason. But that’s because I like to collect and I’m (trying to be lol) a snob.
cuts cardboards with the center portion of the edge, then whittle hair with front portion of the edge that wasn't cutting cardboard; "the edge retention so good! it's still whittling hair". i'm not sure this is a correct assessment of reality my friend.
If you listened to the video I specifically said this is how good the factory edge came. That had nothing to do with the factory edge test or any other testing of this knife.
Why not? I would rather use a $10 Wally World knife than a $180 bugout (as an example. One is worth the price one is not. 🤷🏻♂️ Furthermore, this knife will be plenty of knife for most people. Opening packages and processing cardboard.
@joelamaro4525 then order any 10$ knife you want why this one if I need a knife and any knife will do I'm not waiting til this one comes back in stock..... don't understand all the hype surrounding *this* one they made so much money on this
@@AlanMarcaski-hw5mu because from what I have seen and heard from people who have used it is it’s the best $10 knife you can buy. So if you want to spend $10 on a knife why not buy the best one you can? This knife is available at my Walmart but I haven’t been bored enough to buy it yet. I might eventually and just leave it in the garage. But my current carries are a Maxace Mamba, Kizer Towser K in Elmax, and an Orion Cetus. Some people think even those are too expensive to actually use. lol
@joelamaro4525 those are all models I'd like to check out, I carry a second knife to pass to people because my edc endura has hand carved custom cf scales on it and it's usually a Ganzo which for 20$ are the best knives ever made EDIT I've seen a lot online that shows this Ozark trail isn't particularly better than anything else at anything, their QC is not good
You're dissecting this $10 dollar knife like it's an overly expensive super premium knife! 😂....people it's $10 bucks. It's not going to be the best of anything. It has a great edge on it. It cuts stuff. It goes in your pocket. It has a handle. Voila....a knife.
Bought two and put one the tool box in the truck and one on my fishing box. For ten buck I don’t have to worry about breaking it or dropping in the lake. Good for what it is. Wouldn’t carry it every day in my pocket.
I took mine apart as soon as I got it home several weeks ago. Absolutely no threadlocker on any of the screws on mine. IMO, this is a nice blade attached to a POS handle. If the blade is off-center, you can apply pressure with your thumbs to the center of the side the blade tip is closest to, while applying pressure to the ends of the scales in the opposite direction ( kind of banana shaped pressure). That will center the blade. But that also demonstrates how flimsy this knife is. I'm tired of hearing "THIS IS AN AMAZING KNIFE, (for the price)." My $19 Ganzo G721 auto in 440c is immensely better, and sturdier, than this OT knife, IMO. It will be around long after this OT has failed.
Good video, first take apart I have seen. I have an assortment box of nylon washers, maybe I will ake one of mine apart and stick them in. Still on 1st edge. Froggy
No issues with my knife. Use it in the kitchen (great slicer), for cardboard, string, yard tasks. The weight is good in my gym shorts. Still going strong and worth the $10 I paid for it. BTW, is the flashlight that you're holding from the Cabela's/Bass Pro boxed knife and flashlight set from last Xmas? Man, what a deal that was for $10. I picked up several of each color and knife blade type. I'm a sucker for good cheap knives.
Why would anyone cut brass or aluminum or any other metal with a pocket knife..wood i understand but the other stuff ,i dont understand.154cm is a awesome knife steel
I think the solution would be to lose those bearings and add some good phosphor bronze washers. I'm not a fan of bearings on high end knives. On inexpensive knives it's just causing more failures and issues. PB washers for the win.
Yes there are two ways to look at it. 1. It's only ten bucks don't respect much and if you lose it or it goes to shit well you don't have much invested. On the other hand it's ten bucks that could have been put towards a better knife. I have several Chinese knives. Oddly three of them, two civivis and one cjrb that I noticed the liners are rusting which is weird because none of my other knives have that problem and I take good care of all my knives. I have a dozen or so knives in the $100 - $225 range those are the knives that over time I continue to really like and would feel bad if I lost. But yeah it's ten bucks.
Finally, someone takes it apart! On the upside, it looks like those omega springs would be compatible with the Bugout, so that's nice for $10 and likely eventually easy to find at any Walmart. These could be a good source for mod parts, or a good platform to mod/test on.
Generally enjoy your content. Obviously you have a passion for knives. You've outdone yourself on this knife and what it means to folks that enjoy knives. First of all if you're not smart enough to fix it take it back and get your money back! Dude you're talking coated D2, bearings, contoured handles, razor thin geometry for $10 and all you can do is bitch, whine and complain. This knife absolutely outdoes anything ever offered at this price point period. Your persistence to advocate for over inflated companies ,and knife steels is at best incompetent. This knife kicks ass and in spite of your inclination to whine and complain you can take it back to Wal-Mart and get your $10 back.
People will go to great lengths to put down budget items to justify what they overpaid for. A $10 knife that holds a decent edge is more valuable than any $200 knife to me. A knife to me is a tool, the most abused tool I own. I will never go through enough $10 knives to justify a $200 knife. Lose a $10 knife, go buy another one, lose a $200 knife and spend all day looking for it. Being a bit gritty only affects people sitting around flipping it open, not real world users. The best knife I have ever carried, and still carry today, is a $15 Benchmade 940 Chinese knockoff.
I agree, if this Ozark trail knife is used for normal pocket knife stuff and not as a fidget toy, it will perform just fine. It's a $10 knife not a work of ART! On a side note, I have a couple of these Ozark trail knives in use and I have found if you put some light oil in the pivot before you start using the knife and don't over tighten the pivot ( trying to get rid of any tiny bit of side play) it will break-in very nice and run smooth.
@@wayneanderson991 nah, it’s not much easier when you have a fixed angled sharpener. I have lots a D2 knives, and that’s what I carried for years before 14c28n was invented. 14c is way easier to strop than D2, and it takes an even sharper edge. But nowadays I would rather just carry my s35vn, and hardly ever have to worry about maintaining it. No stropping or nothing for weeks.
@@airadaimagery692 I have a shop full of commercial sharpening systems. Stropping is much faster and easier to maintain a blade than sharpening. If the knife does not need to be sharpened because of edge damage stropping takes seconds to bring back an edge.
Is there any preventative maintenance that can be done or any simple/cheap upgrades for this thing? You took it apart and didn't say anything about how to improve it.
I was lucky enough to get one when this knife first went viral. I've carried it and used it basically as a fidget toy for the past 3 weeks, or so. I noticed the grittiness in the action. I tried super lube Grease, prolong and WD-40 silicone. What seemed to work best was all purpose wheel bearing Grease. I should have greased it up when I first got the knife to prevent the wear but I didn't because it had bearings.
Thanks for doing this! As impressed as I've been by the performance I've gotten it's nice to get a peek under the skirt. Nothing here is too shocking, I still think it's the best burner knife on the market.
I’ve been trying to get one of these for a bit now but I think I would be better getting something like a Civivi or Kizer for an extra few bucks that would last a lot longer
Also looking forward to seeing the Spyderco pd#1 updates and testing. I picked up a couple Police 4 models and an Endura in pd#1. Seem to have great factory edges, very sharp which leads me to believe like cruwear it will take a smoking edge when the time comes. Also waiting till Xmas for the Stretch 2 xl in pd#1 as It will be a gift from my daughter. Hopefully the blade will fit in the g10 version……I don’t see why not. But time will tell.
