Magnacut Spyderco Mule Team edge retention testing with a discussion about this steel so far. This is the fifth example I've tested and used so I'll talk a bit about it after the results. This is the factory, first, third and fourth sharpening tests with the second sharpened edge for use.

My magnacut knife doubled in performance after the first edge too. i did have to correct the slightly uneven bevels and adjusted the overall geometry for better cutting quality. The edge itself feels tacky like m4, and id guess its at a 62. No issue with rolls, chips, i just struggle trying to carry a fixed blade with higher frequency. i only paid 300 bucks for a hand forged custom in magnacut so 62 hrc is still very enjoyable.

Appreciate the discussion as always. Now that I’ve had a good chance to work with the spyderco 4V I feel like it’s reinforced that it and Magancut are very similar in how the edge breaks down. Sharpening experience is astonishingly different from my very small sample size though. The higher hardness on the 4V really benefits the front end sharpness and for me pushes it into a higher likability for that level of carbide.

I'm going to cover some more on 4V vs Magnacut after I do the video on my custom 4V. Factory heat treat wise they are similar to a point. When the custom HT stuff comes in that's where the difference comes out.

Thank you for all the work you do for the community. Much appreciated. You've inspired me to start doing cutting tests on my own knives, start using them more, and getting a better idea on how my knives and certain steels perform. Do you keep count of the total cuts you make for the fine edge and working edge tests? Would that be something you can include along with the total ft. cut? I've just been going off of total cuts made, but it'll take me awhile before I have enough information for comparison. Do you have any tips on when to call a test done? I know that's going to be different per person, but since I'm just starting out and getting a feel for it, I wanna make sure I'm not over testing, especially for the working edge test.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
I keep track of how many cuts then convert inches to total feet. When the apex doesn't shave without pressure I stop my fine edge. When the apex won't cleanly slice paper that's the end. I'm going to cover testing in a video briefly so the newer viewers know what's going on. As far as over testing just use your judgment but more importantly keep consistency. Your benchmark to stop fine then working edge is what's important. I've done many tests multiple times if something seems off just to verify the results. I'm glad to hear you will be testing, I've noticed a few others doing testing as well and that's a good thing. I'm interested to see what results you get.

So I took my mule and put it right to use in the kitchen as soon as I got it. A ine had a asymmetrical grind and even a bit of a smiley towards the heel. It was very sharp out of the box but I went ahead and put one edge on it trying to basically match up factory bevels. It was 17°/19°. I could feel a difference on my diamond stones in comparison to all the other stainless steels I've used being "smoother" and had a very fine burr that came off easily. I used it as my primary utility knife everyday for 3 months on everything from general kitchen chopping and cutting to package opening, box breakdown, hard plastic. During the entire time it maintained a very good edge with no issues at all on multiple types of cutting boards. I threw it in the dishwasher and basically abused it. I only stopped it back once on 3 micron not because I really felt like it needed it but I just wanted to see if I could detect a change on cutting newsprint. And I did get an incremental increase in cutting ability both with and across the grain on the paper. Sal has said they were looking for 62 as their sweet spot on the mules And it seems to me they've been pretty consistent. Clearly there's room for improvement on raw cutting performance with a custom HT but I wonder if there would be a adverse effect on toughness and corrosion as a result?
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
Different heat treats will have some effect on it. Consider that even at a higher hardness it's still going to be tougher than the other powder metal stainless used now in production knives. Time and use will let us know how well it is with corrosion resistance as more companies use it.
@HenryPipes
@HenryPipes 2 года назад
For me Magnacut really does everything well. In my example of a custom knife it's edge retention is about he same as good 20CV, but it's even more corrosion resistant, much tougher, and not very difficult to sharpen. I am hoping to see a lot more of it on production knives. I hope one day it's the next S30V of EDC.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
It will be very common in knives as time goes on. Most have plans to use or are already working with Magnacut. I have 3 more Magnacut yet to test and I'm going to go more in depth about it after those are done.
@mikeobrien4081
@mikeobrien4081 2 года назад
I wonder if we're already seeing near-optimal results for Magnacut, since it attracts makers who are already data- and performance-oriented, and since they know that many of the early customers rushing to buy custom/small-batch Magnacut knives are going to be very picky about results. It has already exceeded Larrin's original performance targets (unless he dialed down his public predictions about that, which seems like his style).
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
I'm going to wait and see. As makers perfect the heat treat I'm betting we see better performance from Magnacut. So far 4V seems to be a little more wear resistant than Magnacut at the same hardness in daily use. We still need more time to see and I have 3 more Magnacut blades to test and then I'll talk more in depth about Magnacut.
@BenoJ3000
@BenoJ3000 2 года назад
It's amazing that Larrin came up with the steel and got it to be stainless. I think it's a good steel if you look at it compared to LC 200n. I would prefer that in a Spyderco salt series knife for the edge stability. I don't know if it's from the niobium but it reminds me of how you would think s110v without cut s90v but it usually does not. Maybe that is the case with this not performing to the same level as 4V.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
Even softer I'd take Magnacut over LC200N. Once I get to test more of this steel I'll have a better idea about it.
@gaberoo9099
@gaberoo9099 2 года назад
Thank you for that. Very interesting. I wonder how much the toughness suffers at those greater hardness levels (64 and 65)? That might be important for outdoor fixed blade knives like the type John (BGM) makes.
@goawaybaizuo
@goawaybaizuo 2 года назад
I was wondering about the toughness on real high HRC magnacut as well. I forget their channel name but some dutch(I think) bushcraft channel was real impressed with it.
@bowow0807
@bowow0807 2 года назад
Larrin's website KnifeSteelNerds has all the experimental testing data and graphs he's done on Magnacut for everyone to see. But from the graph you'd be interested in Magnacut's performance at around 60.3HrC has a toughness of just under 18ft-lbs of force for hard impact/chipping resistance at the edge and not a huge drop until 62.4HrC which is at 16ft-lbs of force (Larrin's test method for toughness is also documented and explained on the website as well as his CATRA edge retention test) after that there's a quicker drop of toughness where at max ~65HrC that drops to around 9.8ft-lbs. So a little over half the toughness is lost at the maximum hardness the steel can be taken to. For quick comparison, M390/20CV/204P at just under 62HrC has a toughness of 5ft-lbs, and S35VN at a low 61HrC has a toughness of 10ft-lbs Take note that those numbers I gave are what I approximated from the graphs from his website as the specific numbers aren't available. It would be better to go to his website and read the whole article yourself as Larrin goes quite in depth comparing Magnacut to other steels he's tested or collected data on. Plus he has a lot of other articles talking about other steels and plenty of graphs comparing them.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 2 года назад
Keep in mind the toughness mentioned in the above comment is an exponential scale like hrc. Even run harder Magnacut is going to offer more toughness than what's currently the favorite production steels manufacturers use. Stock thickness and the grind will also play a part for outdoor fixed blades. Take an Esee 5 for example, in 1095 at thier hardness it's going to be about as tough as Magnacut at 62.5. The bonus will be corrosion resistance and a huge wear resistance increase. If I wanted tougher there are other steels I'd pick first for an outdoor knife but on your average outdoors fixed blade in the 4 inch blade range 62 rc Magnacut is going to be fine. I'll be doing some testing outdoors on the BGM Magnacut I have for a video soon.
