Yes compression fittings will also work the Freon varies I use a snap on ac machine machine so I just fill it till the pressure is about 30psi with the ac compressor on

Had a brutal vac leak tapping into that port like you did I did it exactly the same I dunno wtf truck ran fucked. Plugged it and it runs mint again I dunno. Made controls work tho
You could possibly have a vacuum leak under the dash on the controls if you have a smoke machine it can be a quick check or connect the vac hose back on the manifold pull the glove box down engine at idle and check for leaks
