OK, we've settled on disassembling and cleaning our own SX-980. Everything works on it, just a bit intermittent sometimes. Thanks for the info, and inspiration!
Just got off the phone with Biff or something like that been in the repair business 50 years The Stereo Shop in Hartford CT and he spent 10 minutes telling me he couldn't do this for under $300 to start and that you can't get parts anymore and then spent another 10 minutes telling me I could do it just go online and find the part for $5 and solder it in myself. Ocular migraine followed. Truth.
Okay, it is the caps, and your replacement @ 14:17 , 100 microferet 200 volt capacitor installation really does the trick, is there anyone out there around the Great Barrington to Albany NY area that is able to do this for me? New York City, lets hear from you!
I've owned 3 of these. All three hum buzz with high volume if you try to connect a preamp to the phono input. Right now I've got a Harman Kardon Citation IV into the back of one of these, and it plays pretty well, but there is an underlying hum that gets real loud with the volume at halfway. The preamp is very powerful so I am getting away with it, but I wish someone would tell me that there's no way to ground a hot chassis 2 prong plug radio with up to date code wiring in a house because there's only one person I'd trust with this and I think they are probably no longer around to examine my Zenith X347 this time.
Hey i have a peavy amp 42+ on the output then it fluctuates and a n oscilltin noise for the driver that drive the + NPN outs....all of the out checked good i replaed the drivers and the bias trans still help!!!
Thanks for the troubleshooting tip! I had exactly the same problem with 6vdc offset on the right channel of a Marantz 2235 . The left ch was also jumpy. I pulled and checked 2sc875 H705 and H706 and they both tested good. I subbed them with a pair of KSC2690's and the amp came out of protection and dialed right in with DC offset close to zero and correct 8mv bias. Excellent!
Respect to you and others that go this deep into electronics and repairing equipment. I tinkered with things back in high school when electronics was a class that was available to take.
Ive used RCS16's STK0050 pack way back when he first made it. If you go to the Audiokarma link in the description you'll see my name as far back as late 2016 lol. I Talked to RCS directly and used mine to replace a set of STK0080's and 8 years later that amp is still on my "rack" on almost daily use
Built in the USA @ 1700 Magnavox Way, Fort Wayne, IN. 46804-1560. Finding it in that condition was the "cat's meow". One of the most common issues I have encountered is open output coupling capacitors.
Love the old Marantz And Sansui's. I still use a Quad 7500A I'd say 60% of the people I've had over here to listen to Rap, Funk, Rock or Classic like the Quad over their modern 5.1 or 7.1 Surround systems. But it took me ages to find the right mix of front to back speaker combo's to bring out every nuance in sound. So I get why people pass them up. Without proper placement and speaker matching the sound is only marginally better. But put in some work and it's very notably better..... QS Synthesized or QS Surround (found only on the 7500A or 9001 Quads) it's an very active surround sound. I'll never go back to Stereo!
when i was in my teen i had an older friend in his 40s and he collected pioneer gear he has a 1980 and a 1250 setup to this day i cannot pass up that vintage pioneer gear . i not have a 1280 a 980 an sg 9500 . i have a few of the prosessors .. i was an electronic nerd as far back as 5 years old i would window shop radio shack so i collect alot of realistic gear as well there is a few vintage recievers i want from them too i have a few eq's so far .. my hoard is just starting
I wish you would do a flow chart like that for my Realistic STA 2000 (D) receiver. I would like to know how the boards are designed and connected. I have a friend who might replace the capacitors and bench test the boards. Where would I find a schematic? Hi-Fi Engine is not accepting new members due to abuse. I cannot download a manual.
