Re: your comment about the tuner quality. Actually, the reason some receivers (including this one) can not receive stations without an antenna attached, is because they have better shielding. A tuner that picks up without an antenna is more susceptible to external RF interference, and is actually acting as an "unintended" antenna for external RF. If you look at the service manual for this receiver, the FM sensitivity spec (given in mV) is right up there with any receiver of the era. Another note - I own the baby brother of this receiver, the KR-4010. It is put away for now, but it was the receiver my parents bought when I was in high school, and yes, it got a lot of use from me! It was rock solid until it was put away. However, I recall the tuner section was having some issues, and now I have something to go on, thanks to you!

I find that the orange caps are usually much higher quality (low leakage) than other caps and tend to leave them alone. Nichicon KL series works well if you're going to replace them or film caps.

Sorry to say, but look back at your reflow job of the speaker switch ( 9:48 ), four or five contacts did not get a good flow and still have partly a cold joint. They will go again in a few years. To much haste I think. Good to see that you gave up on the shotgun replacements by now 😉

Hi I have been a subscriber for a while. I am currently doing a full restoration on a Pioneer SX 939. When I got it it was totally DEAD. I rebuilt all the boards and fixed or replaced everything I could see broke or wrong. It now came to life and all seems good except I can not get any sound out of it when hooked to an antenna and speakers. I tested the DC offset which is good. I am at a loss as to what to test or how. Could you give me some advice as to where to look and how to test? Thank you for any help.

Great. Two things: How much (if any) antenna did you have when testing the tuner? How do you get your cat to purr so loud?

I stopped buying deoxit. I just use neutrol 401B and CRC these days.

That volume pot is not the original... The shaft was hand modified to a flat shaft from a round shaft.

Could you give me some help?? My Marantz 2220B works very well, I love the sound of it, but the STEREO lamp is very difficult to turn on on FM. On AUX-PHONO-TAPE it works perfectly, but on FM it is very difficult, although the FM station is picked up, the sound is clean, but the lamp turns on with great difficulty, stations above 100 are almost impossible to turn on the STEREO. And the few stations that the STEREO turned on were with a wire that goes outside the house, passing through the window, and another Technics receiver that I have picks up the signal 100% and the stereo turns on in all the stations with just a little bit of wire. Are there any adjustments I could make? I thank you in advance.

Be carefull with lamps wattage. Must be 3W maximum, not the most common 5W ones.
