Good to note that anyone doing this should stick to a FJ case. Currently looking under a TRD 4runner right now with a manual transfer case, but also has an ADD.
I would guess it will cause more wear, but in my case I just want it to work. I’ve had so much trouble with the actuators on diffs, lockers, and t cases, and I was over it. If I bought a second one of these rigs it would be the very first mod I did. Short answer. Yes. Worth it to me.
Yep. I am the original builder. I should have done a better job of documenting it. You can find some pictures and videos of the build on Instagram. @thedirtmile Feel free to reach out to me here and ask questions. I appreciate you watching and complimenting the rig. It was a hell of a build.
Did not know you could not camp on FS roads in the Bear County of Wyoming. Good to know. Doing a 30-day road trip through Colorado and Wyoming in July.
I have a 2011 with automatic transmission like yours. Did you source a t-case out of an automatic transmission FJ? I have been doing some research but haven’t yet found if it matters if the t-case came from an auto or manual vehicle.
You bought a wrecked SUV that probably doesn't have a straight panel on the whole thing and your complaining about some bondo on the door. Look at the rest of the vehicle it's a mess!!!
Did you stretch the frame on this 1st gen tundra? Or took an extended cab and just cut away at it to fit the sunrader on to match the wheel wells? Love the rig!!
Likely won’t make a difference in handling or performance, but it means there is no failure point later. My actuator is stuck, so I haven’t had a problem, but I could imagine a scenario where it could move if it wasn’t so stuck. That’s where a solid tube wouldn’t fail.
So, I’ve done the swap to the fj case and I tried setting up the ADD to work on a rocker switch. It’s a ON-OFF-ON switch. It works but I keep burning up ADDs doing it that way. I’ve read that when you engage the ADD it’s actually engaging the passenger side shaft and not the driver one. After watching your video I’m really tempted to just say F it and have it basically always locked. How does it drive with it always locked like that while turning on pavement. Also does your MPG drop?
I didn’t notice a drop in mileage, and I’ve never seen a difference on pavement. These are still the best mods I’ve ever done to the truck. FJ cruisers don’t have ADD and they work great in the dirt and on pavement. You could source a solid tube from one of those too to delete.
@@some-random-bloketo be honest, I’m not 100 percent sure on all of them, but we have had one of the front diffs out of them and the one I’ve seen, doesn’t have ADD. But you’re right. It was only a manual and could be different. Most of the reason I swapped FJ case and ADD deleted the truck is from a reliability standpoint. I just don’t want all of the actuators and electronics. My 4wd ECU is completely deleted now, and I couldn’t be happier. It always goes in and out of 4wd easily now. I would for sure delete ADD again given the chance. My 3rd Gen 4runner got it deleted this week!
Hey a friend of yours was in the shop the other day and asked me about my sunradar,he told me about your amazing rig, showed me a video of it ,im in the beginning stage of a frame of swap, the plan was to swap my 4runner w the 3.slow under it,but after seeing the rout you went with yours im rethinking my options i was hoping to see if youd be down to share how you went about fitting the body on the truck if you talk to steve he knows the shop where im at swing in if your in town,my sunrader made it thru the cameron peak fire and still has fire retardant on it hoping to get it done by spring mom retired and want something reliable to go travel hope to chat soon thanks Todd
I built a frame on frame setup for mine. Torsion free camper frame. If you look it up online you’ll see a million options. I used Chevy valve springs because they’re strong and cheap. Check out the pictures on @thedirtmile on insta. Send me some pics of your rig over there. I’d be stoked to see it.
Thank you so much. Things are calming down for me a bit in real life and I may be able to get back to making some more videos. I really appreciate the high praise.
I looked through my Gaia app and failed to find the exact location. It’s just off the highway near Burgess Junction, WY. Now you’ve got my brain working. I’ll keep trying to find it and follow up if I do.
I’m not sure on the driveline lengths on everything. It worked out exactly the same on my ‘10 4door TRD Taco at least. did you ever end up doing the swap? sorry the reply is so late.
I'll be visiting Colorado for the first time and my son and I are thinking about renting a side-by-side and hitting some trails. It would only be a half day and I'm leading towards MSV but there's so many options I'm overwhelmed. Normally I would want to pick something flat aand fast but I'm looking for a change of pace. What would you recommend if you're familiar with the area
MSV is great, and has good access to Coney Flats, and all of the trails at Bunce School Road including the T33a plane crash trail. All from a central parking area off of Highway 7 at the fire station.
Thank you for making such a detailed video! I will be using this and the thread on Tacomaworld (which I linked your video to) when I do this. I have had my tcase sitting in my garage for 2 years..
For sure. Happy to do it. It was fun to document, knowing it might clear up some of the less obvious bits. Thanks for bearing with me as I struggled through it on video. I learn as I go.
Last October, a couple of us did this route in reverse. Climbing up Fix-It-Pass in the dark and then navigating all the washes in the dark back to the highway was fun and challenging.
very cool video. planning on 4wd swapping my 07 prerunner but also want to go this route with the fj case to avoid wiring up a button and any problems with being able to engage. thanks for all the info!
Thanks man. I do a lot of fun projects, and most of them are already well documented on RU-vid. This one was fun to make and share. Let me know how it goes. It’s a great mod for these trucks.
Very cool trip. We do a lot of the same...trying to link things together. Bailey seems very cool. We take an adventure dog as well. Awesome channel. Subbed!
Albertan here. I found a place called recluse Wyoming. If it looks like what I see in this video I'm moving there. Great job here, I'm going to subscribe
just picked up a manual 2011 TRD sport a year ago. Was cool to find this project on the forums for if and when I ever want to get rid of the kooky 4WD switch on the dash for something more reliable. Thanks for the great video bro!
