Swap a FJ Transfer Case into my 2010 Tacoma

After having trouble with both my ADD actuator and transfer case actuator in my Tacoma, I dove into this thread www.tacomaworld.com/threads/l...
and decided not to replace the actuators, but to delete them with a transfer case from a 2008 FJ Cruiser that I sourced locally from junkyard. This is a video of my experience, and is for entertainment only. I'm not responsible for you ruining your rig, or making it awesome with attempting this mod. Enjoy!

Best video on RU-vid for this t case swap. Thanks man!!

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate that feedback. I do a lot of funky projects, and I need to be better at filming them. It was fun to do, and by far the best mod I’ve done to the Tacoma. Makes deep snow and the Ozark trips I do more fun, when the vehicle will go in and out of 4wd reliably. Cheers

Thank you for making such a detailed video! I will be using this and the thread on Tacomaworld (which I linked your video to) when I do this. I have had my tcase sitting in my garage for 2 years..

For sure. Happy to do it. It was fun to document, knowing it might clear up some of the less obvious bits. Thanks for bearing with me as I struggled through it on video. I learn as I go.

Your video is great I swapped the same transfer case in my 3thgen 4runner. And I installed Toyota Vigo add ecu now it works perfectly 👌

just picked up a manual 2011 TRD sport a year ago. Was cool to find this project on the forums for if and when I ever want to get rid of the kooky 4WD switch on the dash for something more reliable. Thanks for the great video bro!

Awesome write up! I did mine this past spring, (I have a 2006 with Manual transmission) so in that I had to split both T-cases to swap a beveled ring gear and swap the input shafts, but otherwise same as yours. Best swap ever!

Thanks for watching. That’s good info there. I knew the output had to be changed for the manual, but didn’t research that any since I didn’t have to mess with that step. It is a great mod for these rigs. Strong work!

Likely won’t make a difference in handling or performance, but it means there is no failure point later. My actuator is stuck, so I haven’t had a problem, but I could imagine a scenario where it could move if it wasn’t so stuck. That’s where a solid tube wouldn’t fail.

Good to note that anyone doing this should stick to a FJ case. Currently looking under a TRD 4runner right now with a manual transfer case, but also has an ADD.

@treehouseoffroad
@treehouseoffroad Год назад
Hey man thanks for the detailed install! I have a 2006 Sequoia and I'm getting ready to do this swap. I replaced the t-case actuator years ago when I first bought the truck and it was EXPENSIVE! Two weeks ago I ripped it off on a rock doing the Rubicon Trail. I can't believe how reasonably priced these cases are. Like you I sourced one locally and it was less than half the price of a used Sequoia t-case. Did you have to modify your driveshafts at all? Looks like I'll need to lengthen the rear a bit and shorten the front, which is fine.
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile Год назад
Mine was plug and play as far as driveshafts are concerned. I believe that 2nd Gen tacos are the only ones that have the same length drivelines as the FJ. I could be wrong in that however. Before doing mine I watched the Sherpa 4runner get the swap, and they needed to lengthen and shorten on a 4th Gen 4runner. It was a little tricky to figure out, which is why I made the video for reference for folks. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Cheers!

Just ordered my fj case today, going to follow your video and do it the same way! I’ve got 2 questions! 1. Did you have to bypass the locker? Or is it still functional with the wiring you did? 2. Did your add delete require any modifications to the wiring?
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile Год назад
1. I did, but have yet to do the locker anytime mod. It didn’t work before reliably, and I’m hoping that that mod will fix that. The locker on the newer rigs is tied into the 4wd ECU which was deleted/bypassed with this mod. A Trac and traction control still work perfect. 2. That last bit kinda lead into the ADD wiring. All the more I did, after pulling the 2 connectors from the 4wd ECU, and wiring them to make the dash lights work, was plug the ADD plug back into the socket, just to keep that wiring out of the way in the future, despite the fact I’m not using it. Hit me up on Instagram if you have any more questions. Good luck, and thanks for watching the video!

Great video ! I have a 2006 4L with auto trans and found a fj case to do the swap. Looks to me like a straight swap but curious on drive shaft length?
@TheDirtMile

I’m not sure on the driveline lengths on everything. It worked out exactly the same on my ‘10 4door TRD Taco at least. did you ever end up doing the swap? sorry the reply is so late.

So, I’ve done the swap to the fj case and I tried setting up the ADD to work on a rocker switch. It’s a ON-OFF-ON switch. It works but I keep burning up ADDs doing it that way. I’ve read that when you engage the ADD it’s actually engaging the passenger side shaft and not the driver one. After watching your video I’m really tempted to just say F it and have it basically always locked. How does it drive with it always locked like that while turning on pavement. Also does your MPG drop?
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile 6 месяцев назад
I didn’t notice a drop in mileage, and I’ve never seen a difference on pavement. These are still the best mods I’ve ever done to the truck. FJ cruisers don’t have ADD and they work great in the dirt and on pavement. You could source a solid tube from one of those too to delete.
@isaacsalberg8760
@isaacsalberg8760 6 месяцев назад
@@TheDirtMile what difference would the solid tube make as far as performance and handling
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile 4 месяца назад
@@some-random-bloketo be honest, I’m not 100 percent sure on all of them, but we have had one of the front diffs out of them and the one I’ve seen, doesn’t have ADD. But you’re right. It was only a manual and could be different. Most of the reason I swapped FJ case and ADD deleted the truck is from a reliability standpoint. I just don’t want all of the actuators and electronics. My 4wd ECU is completely deleted now, and I couldn’t be happier. It always goes in and out of 4wd easily now. I would for sure delete ADD again given the chance. My 3rd Gen 4runner got it deleted this week!

I have a 2011 with automatic transmission like yours. Did you source a t-case out of an automatic transmission FJ? I have been doing some research but haven’t yet found if it matters if the t-case came from an auto or manual vehicle.
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile 4 месяца назад
It needs to be from an Auto. The manual cases are awd like the 4th Gen 4runner, I believe.
@downanddirtywithdillon7772
@downanddirtywithdillon7772 Год назад
Is there anything else you had to do besides what’s in this video? If so, what did you have to do? I’m LS swapping my 08 Tacoma right now so it’s a little bit different since I’ll have a NP241 case, but trying to figure out the front diff stuff right now mainly. I just want to shift the tcase in 4wd and have everything work like it should.
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile Год назад
That’s all that had to be done for my application. what you saw in this eliminated the need for the 4wd ECU and works like having front hubs that are locked in all of the time. It sounds like a sweet project.
@Gazonka
@Gazonka 3 месяца назад
So with the ADD deleted, the front driveshaft will just constantly be spinning? Will that cause any excessive wear to anything? Gears, seals, etc?
@TheDirtMile
@TheDirtMile 3 месяца назад
I would guess it will cause more wear, but in my case I just want it to work. I’ve had so much trouble with the actuators on diffs, lockers, and t cases, and I was over it. If I bought a second one of these rigs it would be the very first mod I did. Short answer. Yes. Worth it to me.
