This is the weakest aria in Messiah, and the one most tenors struggle with. We tend to get a lot of shakiness in most performances of this, slurring/unclear notes and breathy weak tone. This performance is certainly one of the stronger ones I have heard, with good control across the jumps and a good deal of power in the upper register. Well done, this is very challenging.
I have this loaded on my phone and I sing along with it driving home repeatedly every day. It's a long drive too. I think I sound so good until I lower the volume. LOL. I also looked at the sheet music later and found out William added that ascending scale at the end! I'm gonna keep it.

Very nice. It's not an easy piece. I've been messing around with it in soprano range because I had it and why not? Those huge jumps, high As and fast runs are definitely a workout.
This is without a doubt the perfect rendition of this recit. I couldn't hear it done better than this. He captures the fragility and sorrow of the subject while maintaining such impeccable tone. Utterly moving and powerful. Thank you.
At the very first few seconds of this video, Dr. John W. Obetz can be seen at the Harpsichord in accompaniment of William Hite in these heartfelt, passionate phrases of the two named MESSIAH Tenor arias. It seems unfair that for as popular and lauded as Dr. Obetz was all across the US - and the world - , this is the only sight of him I have been able to locate on the entire internet. If any person(s) know of other videos in which he appears, please post them. He was a guiding light to hundreds of musicians, students, and particularly organists well-known, and not so much, who follow(ed) his examples in music-making in the RLDS (now Community of Christ) Church, headquarters in Independence, Missouri.
I was wrong. I found another OBETZ video! This one is self-explanatory: a Springfield, Missouri rededication concert of a Casavant Organ, rebuilt by Temple Organs of St. Joseph, MO, David Cool, President. I see seated near David the late Jon Bertschinger, decades-long advocate and voicer of Temple Organs who was also a member of the volunteer team of Staff Organists for many years at Community of Christ Auditorium and Temple Organs, Independence.
This song is even more dramatic when you realize that the words were written in the time before ZipLock bags and plastic containers. EVERYTHING was keip in crockery. The thought of smashing a pat with a poker is pretty damned dramatic. Dennis
Heinrich Heine Der Doppelgänger - The Doppelgänger The night is quiet, the alleys are quiet, My beloved lived in this house; She has long ago since left the city, Yet, the house resolutely remains. A man stands there too and gazes aloft, And wrings his hands from the force of his pain, I shudder when I see his face - For I see my very own form in the moonlight. Doppelgänger, you ghostlike companion! Why do you mock the pain of my love That has tortured me here on this spot So many a night, in times gone by?
Heinrich Heine Die Stadt - The City On the far horizon Appears, like a misty image, The city with its towers, Shrouded in the dusk. A damp wind creases The grayish water’s course; With melancholy cadence the boatman Rows my skiff. The sun lifts itself once again, Glowing upwards from the horizon, And shows the very place Where I lost what was most precious to me.
Heinrich Heine Das Fischermädchen - The Fishermaiden You, lovely fishermaiden, Bring your skiff to shore; Come, sit next to me, We’ll dally, hand in hand. Lay your little head on my heart, And do not be afraid; Indeed, you entrust yourself without a care Every day to the wild sea! My heart is just like the sea, It has storms and ebb and flow, And many a lovely flow pearl Rests in its depths.
Heinrich Heine Ihr Bild - Her Image I stood in somber daydreams And stared at her image, And that beloved visage Began mysteriously to come to life About her lips was drawn A wondrous smile, And, as if they were about to fill with nostalgic tears, Her eyes glistened. My tears did flow as well Down from off my cheeks - And ah, I cannot believe That I have lost you!
