El buceo libre o apnea es un deporte de riesgo, ya que somete la fisiologia corporal a tremendos cambios en la presion barometrica sobre los pulmones; por lo tanto en los últimos metros de ascenso a la superficie, los pulmones pasan de la forma de una pelota aplastada y comprimida, a su tamaño normal y es ahi donde puede producirse la pérdida del conocimiento, como una defensa del sistema nervioso, que se apaga y si no tiene asistencia médica puede morir el apneista.
