Look no one is staring at their cell phones! Everyone is paying attention to where they are going. They look happy and contented. There is no one stabbing anyone and there are no homeless people on the platforms or in the cars causing trouble. Boy, this is amazing!
When you get the feel of how culture was directed toward good structure ,no political groups in the hundreds. The character of carrying oneself is so refreshing when looking back at these old clips.
So they say they’ve reached the vehicular saturation point in the city some 60 years ago, and expressed the need for massive transit. What on earth happened
I'm seeing a lot of moaning here, which surprises me, frankly. I'm middle aged now; I was in university when this was presented. Metro (which all became just Toronto in 1997) had a population of 2.2 million then; it's about 3 million now. The GTA was about four million then; it's about seven million now. More people than ever live downtown, bucking the trend typical of most of the US. All the things people were sweating in 1988 didn't prevent the expansion of the city and the opportunities and amenities here. I moved _from_ the outer suburbs _into_ Toronto in the meantime. Nothing's perfect, and we need to keep our eye on the ball, but for crying out loud, people, you live in a city that works and one that people from all over the world are attracted to for that reason. Stop being so "the glass is 10% empty" and focus on what we're getting right and make sure that keeps moving forward.
Tell that to Galileo. Complacency brings about pain and despair, widely. Creates just the right conditions for populist thinkers. Be weary of the glass half full disposition. Never has rewarded the following generations - of whom grow old. OH, and let me guess, you've got a pool in your backyard and a tee time on Sundays. Absolutely tone deaf comment, surely from a position of entitlement (ownership of capital)
Our problem is that we don't have Pride our own greatness. Does anyone know where the Full Size Arrow is displayed today? This is one of our biggest innovation after Hockey, Insolin, Telephone, 8G Fighter Pilot Suit (so they don't pass-out)etc. Messier-Dowty (Ajax) made the original Landing Gear and the for the 50yrs Anniversary full size Model. It sits in an Airport 1.5hrs north of Toronto and can be seen on on Weekdays 9am-4pm if it is open. Shame on us Canadians. The US Apollo 11, Blackbird, Shuttle model in every Aerospace Museum. We even make Tim Hortons successful and sell it. We made the C-Series as the best selling aircraft today, but we gifted it away. No Pride to fight for it.
Allen is rolling in his grave at the amount of congestion today. The Allen was originally supposed to go all the way to Lakeshore - that’s where he fell short.
Nah, there's a lot more than there was. There are dedicated busways in Mississauga and York Region, a new subway line in Toronto and a huge extension of one of the existing ones, the Eglinton and Finch LRTs will open presently; the Spadina streetcar line reopened after 49 years; the 407, 412, and 418 were built, the 427 was extended _twice_ since 1988, and you can transfer from one system to another in the GTA using the same card now. It's a lot better than it was in 1988.
Public transit has massively expanded. You can even see it in the past five years. And since it was recorded in 1988, at least one highway, the 407, has been built
Un ...stie d'incapable, un crosseur et un bon à rien! Il fallait juste les Québecois stupides pour maintenir au pouvoir si longtemps un pareil insignifiant. Il faut croire que les québécois se reconnaissaient en sa médiocrité!
I was born in Toronto and I am still living here I have seen a lot of changes over the decades but what I am seeing in Toronto today horrifies me. This mega Link's which seems to be replacing the TTC and what a shit show with all this construction everywhere very bad planning by our politician's 😱🤯 😬 they should go back and take a page out of there books 💥🤔🤬🙃🙂
As an American, I wish the CF-105 had entered service. Outstanding aircraft. So much potential down the shitter, even more than the TSR.2. Diefenbaker was a tool.
As a Canadian… I don’t care. The Arrow was the equivalent of a fully automatic ball musket. Definitely superior to a flintlock musket.. but totally obsolete in the face of new ICBM threats. This is where we got off the train of runaway cost-plus-fee defence contracts that still plague the Pentagon.
@@calvinnickel9995 Runaway costs, yet those same engineers deciding to work on the moon landing project for NASA after getting laid off were justified costs? Keeping those engineers and using the talent/knowhow from the Arrow and into other projects within Canada would've yielded more profitable than scrapping everything - we aren't the US, there are plenty of countries that have sizable domestic manufacturing capabilities without an intrusive military industrial complex. The tech, brainpower and development could've easily been converted to a new fighter, attacker or even passenger aircraft. As for the BOMARCs and ICBM defence? Those weren't even effective at the job they were supposed to do because Deafie scrooged out on those as well.
Those were the days before legalized drugs ,terrorism, multiculturism, gays and when we could even take shampoo on an airplane Man have the elites really screwed things up .
Why is everything old school always the best school? Interesting to see and hear the differences in speech. The Toronto accent seemed a lot more American back then. And notice how a 19 year old like spoke without like ever using the word "like" like every other word. Also, never heard of the "Y" transfer until now. Seems like a completely overcomplicated idea. Cool report from a once great CBC.
it was also 'Toronto the equitable'.. private equity now owns the world.. because we had to sell out, you know the 'crisis' and all. No choice 🪡... or was there?
How wonderful to see fellow Torontonians well-dressed on their commute to and from their end destinations. A far contrast with today's ripped jeans and ultra-casual commuters.
I remember reading a book about the development of the Toronto subway and the only criticism was that the subway planners did not include an express track so that some stations were bypassed and not overcrowded from the outer city. All the cities with the forethought to make the capital investments in this infrastructure are now great.
It’s very hard to believe that improvements in TO’s transportation system have not kept up with the population increase. Selling off of the 407 was a huge mistake. We never take the 401 when visiting from the US.
Mullooney was a jerk. He brought in free trade which helped me lose my first job in a factory in Ontario. I hate him and his chin. All politicians suck
OMG my mother told me she was on a tv show about public transit back in the '60's but I never thought I'd ever see her interview here! She turns 77 this year. Happy birthday mom!
Mulroney was a horrible PM and a bad person. He sued Canada (taxpayers) even though he knew that his suit had no truth (but the truth couldn't be proven). Scourge.
I met Brian when I was a kid my parents took us to Ottawa... The PM came in with his entourage he saw me... stopped came to say hello... He took time to say hello to a little boy who had no idea who he was. I can still remember his voice.
