I used to make leaf bumper springs for garage doors. We used the cheapest, crappiest steel on the market. The galvanized layer would flake off and in some cases I could peel away a long strip off that garbage metal. That place shut down the parts section not long after I was laid off, the entire place went a few years later. I sometimes wonder what I breathed in with all that galv dust floating around.
Good to see this informative docu.. why cant we use stainless steel instead of this hot dip galvanized steel... Any cost benefits ...? or any other factors to use carbon Steel instead of SS304, 316 etc..?
There are a few factors... one is strength - you have a much broader range of material strengths wben using carbo steel. Other factors can include cost - a 316 stainless frame can be much more expensive than a steel frame which has been galvanised. Stainless is also harder to fabricate (it will warp more when welding). Can you hurt coating by screwing a galvanized screw into a galvanized frame wall,joist,thruss etc at a joint in order to frame the skeleton of a house, my question is screwing a possible future corrosion issue? If yes do I have to paint or spray every screw hole and screw in again? Thank you guys.
Thank you. What if you fabricate an item using galvanized steel? How do you protect the edges that were cut or welded apart from painting? In other to retain the whole benefit of galvanization.
Thomas, this is a great question. Typically, you would want to do as much fabrication as possible before galvanizing to keep the coating intact. However, if there is an area that required cutting or welding on site, ASTM A780 contains the proper method for touch-up with zinc-rich paint, zinc solder, or metallizing. How long does the zinc oxide protection last ? I have metal I siding sheets on the house (20 years) now starting to show rust. Guys around me are just saying “rust primer and paint”, but I don’t understand why I cannot buy a spray to protect instead
The length of life of any zinc coated item is linear to the thickness of the zinc, and dependent on the atmosphere.
