I draw out the board on a piece of paper, and we use 7 pennies vs 7 times as our tokens and flip 4 quarters as the "dice." (The only requirement is that the different coins not be easy to confuse with each other, so copper pennies and silvery domes, while similar in size, are really easy to differentiate.)

I only draw the 20 squares and the 5 rosette squares. The rest of the pattern is decoration, as far as we can tell, though as Irving Finkel points out, he did some educated guessing about the rules. His reconstruction is definitely entertaining, though!

It sounds like you're observing an increase in the **density or number of visible tracks** when an **electric field** is applied in your cloud chamber experiment. While this might seem surprising at first, there are a few plausible explanations for why this might happen, even though the electric field doesn't directly create more particles. Let’s explore the potential reasons for this observed effect: ### 1. **Electrostatic Focusing or Acceleration of Ionized Particles** When you apply an electric field to a cloud chamber, the charged particles moving through the chamber may be accelerated or decelerated depending on their charge and the direction of the field. This change in energy can influence how much **ionization** they produce along their path. - **More ionization at slower speeds**: If particles (especially lighter beta particles) are **decelerated** by the electric field, they may spend **more time in the chamber** and interact more frequently with the surrounding gas. This could increase the ionization rate, making the tracks denser and more numerous, as more vapor molecules become ionized and condense along the particle's path. - **Electric field focusing**: The electric field may also act as a **focusing mechanism** for some of the lower-energy, slower-moving particles. These particles might be deflected or redirected in such a way that they remain in the visible part of the chamber for longer, increasing the chances of observing their tracks. ### 2. **Secondary Ionization Effects** The electric field could be increasing the **likelihood of secondary ionization**. This is when primary particles, such as alpha or beta particles, knock off electrons from surrounding atoms, which themselves become ionized. These **secondary electrons** can then go on to produce additional ionization, leading to more visible tracks. - **Amplification of ionization**: The applied electric field may give enough energy to these secondary electrons to produce **more collisions** with gas molecules, causing an increase in the **number of ionized molecules** and thus creating more visible tracks. ### 3. **Electric Field Enhancing Condensation** In a cloud chamber, particle tracks become visible because the ionized gas molecules act as nucleation sites for the vapor to condense into tiny droplets. It's possible that the **electric field enhances this condensation** process by influencing the behavior of the ionized particles: - **Increased nucleation**: The electric field could potentially **polarize** or otherwise affect the charged particles in such a way that more of the ionized molecules become effective nucleation sites for condensation, thereby making the tracks appear more **numerous** or **denser**. ### 4. **External Environmental Effects** The presence of an electric field could also **affect the environment** inside the chamber in subtle ways that increase the number of observable tracks: - **Electric field causing localized cooling**: In some setups, the electric field might cause localized cooling or changes in air pressure that could enhance the condensation of vapor around ionized particles. This could make tracks more visible or increase their density. - **Electrical interaction with the chamber walls**: Depending on how the electric field is applied (e.g., through charged plates), there may be additional ionization effects from the chamber walls, leading to more particles entering the chamber and creating more tracks. ### 5. **Electrostatic Attraction of Ions** When a strong electric field is applied, ions created by passing alpha or beta particles can be attracted toward the oppositely charged plates, influencing their movement. This could lead to an increase in the **number of visible ionization trails**, especially if particles that were previously not visible are now directed toward a region where they can be more easily observed. ### 6. **Increasing Energy of Particles Entering the Chamber** If the electric field is strong enough, it could be giving an extra "push" to some charged particles entering the chamber, allowing them to have **higher energies** and interact more vigorously with the chamber gas. This could increase the amount of ionization and result in more visible tracks. ### 7. **Increase in Background Radiation** Depending on the configuration, the application of an electric field might cause **increased background radiation** or ionization effects from the surrounding environment. This might result in more tracks, even though the source of radiation remains the same. ### Conclusion: While the electric field itself doesn’t directly create more particles, it can influence their **behavior**, such as by: - Slowing down some particles, causing more ionization and denser tracks. - Enhancing secondary ionization processes. - Improving the condensation process in the chamber. - Influencing environmental factors that enhance visibility. These effects could make it appear as though there are more tracks or that the density of tracks has increased, even though the total number of particles passing through the chamber remains the same.

What is a "first surface" mirror, and why is it expensive?
@wayneschmidt490
@wayneschmidt490 9 дней назад
Regular mirrors have the reflective surface on the back of the glass with a protective layer of paint over it. When you look at yourself in it, the light from your face passes through the glass, gets reflected off the back, then passes back out a second time through the glass. This creates to problems for infinity mirrors. The first is that the light is dimmed twice as it passes through the glass twice. The second is that the un silvered front face also reflects a very dim image, which creates a faint double image effect that reduces the sharpness of the image. A first surface, or front surface, mirror has the reflective layer, usually aluminum, on the front of the glass. This way the image never passes through the glass when it's reflected. This eliminates much of the dimming because the light doesn't pass through the glass as often and eliminates the double image issue. First surface mirrors are also used in good kaleidoscopes and reflective telescopes.
@wayneschmidt490
@wayneschmidt490 9 дней назад
The reason why they are more expensive is that the first surface reflecting surface is very delicate and requires special handling, including a removable protective cover.

A small crochet hook might work. The tool I used was a long, thin tweeter with one tong cut off near the end of the handle, leaving enough left to form a hook. Sorry, it's impossible to identify it without some images. A big propane is that by the 1920s, almost all machines had adopted the Singer body shape so they all looked a lot alike. Also, several companies made thousands of the same machine and gave them a variety of names and decorations to make them look difference. All these things makes identification difficult. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

This is nonsense, at the fork for it to change its path instantly can not happen ,you have to figure out what you're observing and its probably got nothing to do with your claim.
@wayneschmidt490
@wayneschmidt490 2 месяца назад
Dear Mr. Gannon, Thank you for taking the time to comment on this video. However, I'm a little confused in that your statement seems to imply that I said, or suggested, that the particle interaction at the fork happened "instantly." I rewatched the video and I can't find anyplace where I make such a statement or even imply it. Could you please watch the video again and let me know at what time I do so? Thank you. The interaction at the fork appears sharp enough to suggest it happens instantly, but at the molecular scale the paths would appear curved and actually do take time. It's not instantaneous. The particles never really touch or collide. Their electric fields interact forcing them to change direction. Finally, what "claim" did I make to which you are objecting? That the initial track was made by a primary cosmic ray? Or that the fork was the result of two particles interacting? I'm not trying to be a jerk by asking all these questions. I honestly want to understand your objections. Until I do so I can't make corrections to the video or even remove it rather than presenting incorrect information. Thank you for any help you can provide. On an unrelated topic, I checked out your channel and enjoyed your videos. Thank you for posting them. In the one where Martin, (your son?) went to toss a treat to the black horse, did the horse walk toward him to chase him or do you think it just wanted to get closer to play?
