I was really delighted recently to stumble across St. Vincent I think it's safe to say she's a 2024 Kate Bush in terms of her approach to indie rock with a baroque twist of interesting production. All Born Screaming is maybe my fav album of the year so far, highly recommend people give it a listen!
Half of these tracks were already on my radar or on my girl folk playlist. Good selection. I saw Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker individually back in 2022 and was already a fan of Phoebe Bridgers, so when I heard about Boygenius I was pumped. Also saw Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen during the Wild Hearts tour. Both amazing performances. Favorite Wolf Alice track is “Silk”.
Great to see you talk about indie rock. Would love to see an interview with J Mascis or Doug Martsch from Built to Spill. A few more artist to check out are The Beth's, The Ratboys, The Beaches, Black Honey, The Last Dinner Party and The Warning (which is more of a rock band) but still awesome.
You should check out a band from Manchester called Everything Everything. Basically a band for Producers, but will still rip your soul apart with intense feelings.
Surprised that Beach House didn't make the list. Their last album, 'Once Twice Melody' was a true old-fashioned double album. Eighteen songs and not a clunker among them -- and no filler. It's wrong to call indie rock a "genre." It's kind of like new wave -- there are so many different styles contained in the term that the idea of genre becomes moot. You then have to get into sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres, and the whole thing just gets silly. The term is great to use on the internet to help find artists, but other than that it just serves to pigeonhole them, as if their intenet "genre" was some sort of determining factor in what sort of music they do. If when you hear a new song that you like, the first question that pops into your head is "What genre is this?" you've got things backwards, and I'm glad that Rick doesn't overuse that term like a lot of other youtube music commenters do.
You would probably love japanese indie-rock band HITSUJI BUNGAKU ("Sheep Litterature") - tons of great songs but you can start with the recent "Addiction", "1999" or "Fool".
I knew a few Wolf Alice tunes… “Moaning Lisa Smile”, “Bros”, “Don’t Delete The Kisses”…those all sound more or less like several of the artists you featured here (not a bad thing). But “Yuk Foo”…sholy hit, where did that come from! I think I love it.
ummmmm chili peppers janes addiction pixies nirvana buffalo tom can go on all were of the Boston nu- alternative sound the genre was so wide Seattle picked out there favoite parts and called it grunge just before the Boston nu alternative seen kicked offf
This is a complicated question...I believe it's a range of factors. A big part is that music requires an engagement in something. You need to either play or listen. It's way easier to scroll on a screen and get the dopamine rush. Learning how to play an instrument requires an investment of time. Being apathetic is not conducive to engaging with your favorite band or style of music!
Does “Indie” mean non commercial? Growing up I had always associated Indie labels with the likes of SST, IRS, and SubPop. I have no idea what it means any more. Maybe there’s some sort of “authentic” vibe? Most of the ones played here sounded more like capturing a performance than being produced tracks. St. Vincent has never done anything for me but Annie Clark is amazing once you get her out of the damned studio. Her stuff is over produced IMO. One of my favorite Indies is Shannon and the Clams. Del Shannon meets Link Wray meets something else. Lots of fun.
Man. 1976, I learned all the Peter Frampton triplets, hammer-ons off Frampton Comes Alive! I even made my own talk box. I took a horn driver, and fish-tank tubing, 2 off/on wall switches. I put the tube thru the driver's hole. Rigged the switches up inside a box made of 1/4 inch thick plywood. With 2 female plugs on each side of the box. Painted the box flat black. It worked!
Keep going Rick... Alot of the exciting things in rock/pop are happening on the indie/ alternate scene... Please help grow independent music...nme, East coast rocker and the such are no longer supporting indie...and most of the indie labels don't get any attention. You have the power to open it up for up and coming artists. Could you interview some of these artists? ... Thank you!
So, I have watched the interview about 25 times. I think its so crazy that Jimmy doesn't play it now like it was recorded. What he does now is so much more nuts than in 94. Wow. So it went from Super hard, to "untouchable" !!!!
